“Technology is used at the Chelsea School as a toolthat enhances our students’ and teachers’ ability to learn, create, collaborate and innovate,” said Katherine (Kate)Fedalen, head of school. The Hyattsville school, whichserves fifth- through 12th-graders with language-basedlearning disabilities, has embraced a variety of hardwareand software that allows students to learn and succeedboth in and beyond the classroom.Preparing students for the workplace of tomorrow is
among the goals of the 1:1 Technology Program at St.Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel, according JeffPalumbo, principal and president. Students employ a vari-ety of Web 2.0 and organizational tools, perform Web-based research, complete and submit homework electroni-cally, and monitor grades online. “Kids today have grownup with cell phones and computers and are comfortablelearning with technology,” said Palumbo. “We view lap-tops, like books, as a tool to help them learn.”Students at both Pallotti and Chelsea have Wi-Fi
access at school. Those at Pallotti must purchase a lap-top—either a PC or Mac—a tablet or iPad, while Chelseastudents may use a smartphone, iPhone, iPad, tablet orlaptop. Given the school’s philosophy, which includes theutilization of innovative technologies, “We need to thinkabout what individual students need,” said Rik Goldman,Chelsea’s director of technology. The technology program at Pallotti, now in its fifth
year, has been phased in. “Last year was the first yearall four grades participated,” said Palumbo. “Pallottiwas a little bit ahead of the technology trend. A lot ofschools in the Baltimore and Washington archdiocesesare now moving in that direction, though some are usingthe iPad exclusively.”Professional development at Pallotti includes a tech-
nology component. “Teachers get excited about technol-ogy when they share it with others,” said Palumbo. “It’smore effective—rather than going to a conference andsitting there—when you’re working hands on with a col-league you know and respect.”Several of Pallotti’s teachers have been using a model
known as a flipped classroom, wherein students haveonline access to classroom lectures. Teachers assign thelectures as homework, freeing up class time to go in-depthwith concepts or to problem-solve together. An added

benefit, said Palumbo, is that “kids have access to thelectures 24/7 and can listen to it if they need to review.”While technology has improved students’ academic
skills, the Chelsea School views it “as a means to eventhe playing field for our students,” said Fedalen, as many“have a hard time accessing content that may be beyondtheir current reading level but that they are developmen-tally and cognitively very able to absorb. In addition, itenhances the students’ ability to creatively and accuratelyexpress what they know and are able to do.”An important part of Chelsea’s approach to technol-
ogy is that “we make sure we’re not using somethingat school that our students can’t access at home,” saidGoldman. That means the school purchases a “license togo” for proprietary software—such as Kurzweil 3000,which “takes text and renders it into speech”—and uti-lizes a range of open-source software, available at no cost.Chelsea provides support to its families and students.“Two faculty members go out to students’ homes andmake sure the software and technology is in place.”Chelsea also uses Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which
turns speech into text, to help students who strugglewith writing. “In the past, a problem was that you hadto ‘train’ the software [to recognize your voice],” saidGoldman. Each time you moved to another computer, you’d have to train the software again. “Now we canstore a student’s profile on our server,” which eliminatesthe need to retrain. Students also can use the softwarewith their phones. “The Dragon app is free on Android oriOS, so students can dictate into the phone and have their
prewriting done. Instead of taking away phones, we’remaking sure students are busy with them.”Interactive boards are used in classrooms through-
out Chelsea School. “Most of them use an amazingnew technology called Epson BrightLink, which allowstwo or three people to interact on the board,” saidGoldman. The BrightLink projectors can be used indi-vidually or “networked so that they can project fromone class into another. And they allow us to annotateanything, even video.”Goldman, who teaches advanced technology courses,
uses Twitter in his classroom. “Some students are shyabout using their voice in class, while others are really COURTESY OF CHELSEA SCHOOL

Rosie Allen-Herring and Allan G. Herring raisedtheir daughters as Baptists. Yet, when it came time forhigh school, the two girls enrolled in a Catholic school.“We are not Catholic and not looking to convert,” saidAllen-Herring of Upper Marlboro, “but what we foundat Bishop McNamara was a nurturing environmentwith shared values.”
What she also found at the Forestville high schoolwas a diverse student body where Catholics are in theminority. As a result, her daughters have been “exposedto other religions, beyond what they had experiencedall of their lives,” said Allen-Herring.“It’s good for children to be exposed to different
faiths,” said Athena Groves, a Baptist whose two sonsattend Holy Trinity Episcopal Day School in Bowie.“I’m comfortable with how their religious learning at

The ultimate goal at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville is to “educate the mind and heart and create individuals who can live in the world with the love of Christ, whether they believe in Christ of not,”said Adam C. Greer, Theology Department chair.

school complements what they’re being taught at ourchurch and here at home.”That’s not to say there aren’t any differences. “Things
come up in Sacred Studies or chapel and I’ll have toexplain how they differ from what we do in the Baptistchurch,” said Groves, a Mitchellville resident. “TheEpiscopal religion has rituals and rights; it’s just a differ-ent way of worshipping.”Of the 520 students in preschool through eighth grade
at Holy Trinity, fewer than 10 are Episcopalian, accord-ing to Michael S. Mullin, head of school. “Our Christianethos and outstanding academics make us a good choicefor many families.”In terms of its Episcopal identity, Holy Trinity
is “about diversity, inclusion and academics,” saidMullin. “People from different faiths feel comfortablewith our spirituality and, as a result, choose to sendtheir children here.”Holy Trinity operates on what Mullin refers to as “a
triangle of faith, arts and knowledge.” When it comes tofaith, students are required to attend weekly chapel ser-vices and classes in Sacred Studies, where the Bible is anintegral part of the curriculum. Students are not requiredto receive communion. “They can choose to stay in theirpew or come up and get blessed without taking commu-nion,” he said.Communion also is offered at Bishop McNamara’s
monthly Mass. “Everyone comes up. Those not receiving
put their hands across their chest,” said Adam C. Greer,Theology Department chair. “Everyone participates insinging and responses.”Developing an understanding and appreciation of the
Mass is a focus of freshman theology courses. Throughfamily surveys and classroom interaction, teachers ascer-tain students’ level of exposure to the Catholic Mass.“We explore the concept of Mass and how it differs fromservices [non-Catholic] students are used to,” said Greer. While Catholic students may have a leg up in terms
of their knowledge of the Mass, the theological playingfield is leveled later on. “I’d argue that our non-Catholicstudents often have a better grasp of Scripture, whileour Catholic students have better doctrinal knowledge,”Greer said.Bishop McNamara students take theology each of
their four years at the school, studying both the Old andNew Testaments and the sacraments. “The second half
of junior year involves an interreligious dialogue,” saidGreer. “We take the big five religions and look at similari-ties and differences, as well as ways to create dialogue.”During senior year, students examine “morality, ethicsand social Catholic teachings; basically, how do we putwhat we’ve learned here into practice?”The fact that Bishop McNamara’s teachers “embrace
many different perspectives allows for great dialogue,”said Greer. “Together, students and teachers explore andcome to understand the many similarities among religionsand where the differences fall.”An optional theology course, Peer Ministry, prepares
students, regardless of denomination, to “serve as thespiritual leaders of the school community, planning andleading our retreat programs,” according to the school’swebsite. Serving as a peer minister was key to Herring’s

vocal and interrupt. So, I have them text to a Twitterfeed and project it … That’s something I appropriatedfrom university classes with 100 or 200 people, but itcan be used for as few as four,” he said.Students taking Goldman’s courses engage in projects
that are “authentic, which means close to real world,”he said. His students recently placed third in an inter-national competition for development of a virtual appli-ance that makes the installation and configuration ofMahara, open-source software that allows users to buildan electronic portfolio, easier. “I want our students tohave a line on their vita saying they contributed substan-tively to a project.”There are challenges for schools that choose to
embrace the use of technology at such a large scale. Thebiggest, according to Fedalen, “is the need to have along-range financial, professional-support and -develop-ment commitment. A second challenge is keeping pacewith the technology natives that our students are. As acommunity we discuss the reality of digital footprintsand the necessity for mature and appropriate use oftechnology. While we value the access our students nowhave to all types of information, we must work to bal-ance enhancing access to stimulating content with devel-opmentally safe content and ultimately that our studentscan independently distinguish between the two.”

daughters’ experience. “By being involved, their visionof inclusion, acceptance of others’ beliefs and love wasshared by all,” said Herring. “There was a clear expec-tation that, as part of the Peer Ministry, they would bementors that other kids could turn to.”Peer ministers assist in planning and leading the fresh-
man-, sophomore- and junior-year retreats. The retreatprogram, which increases in duration each year—thejunior-year retreat is usually four or five days—providesopportunities for spiritual formation and challenges stu-dents in their faith, according to the school’s website.Service learning also is an integral part of the student
experience at Bishop McNamara. “We not only teach stu-dents to ‘Think with Christ,’ but also to live like Christ,”noted the website. The service program “is guided by loveof neighbor and the work of social justice.”Upward of 95 hours of community service is required
over a student’s four years. “Students often work withchildren or the elderly,” said Greer. “Juniors deal withissues of poverty, while seniors focus on the themes ofCatholic social teaching. The service has to be Christianservice, not simply helping out on a football team.”The ultimate goal at Bishop McNamara High School
is to “educate the mind and heart and create individualswho can live in the world with the love of Christ, whetherthey believe in Christ or not,” said Greer.
