As independent schools in Prince George’s County seekto prepare students for success, some use service learningto broaden awareness and alter perspectives. Servicelearning allows students to “experience and explore situa-tions that are not ordinarily a part of their lives,” accord-ing to The Center for Service Learning at The CommunityCollege of Baltimore County’s website, “and in so doingprovide opportunities for expanding the limits of theirknowledge that are very important if they are to be anintegral part of an increasingly diverse society.”

“As a Christian school, community service is essentialto our spiritual formation,” said Erin Morris, Christianservice coordinator at DeMatha Catholic High School inHyattsville. The all-boys school features a comprehen-sive service-learning program that is tied to graduation.“The Trinitarian Order was founded on the idea of ran-soming people from poverty. Our program was createdto develop well-rounded boys who, through ransomingothers, give hope and grow as well.”

While DeMatha students may choose the serviceproject that they feel they are best equipped to contributeto, at least 20 hours of service must be “contact work.We want them to be working directly with people inneed or marginalized in some way,” said Morris. Theservice-learning commitment spans all four years. “Webelieve as people grow and develop, they have different

gifts to offer. They also appreciate the experience differ-ently as a 14-year-old than as an 18-year-old.”

DeMatha offers three service trips annually. “Theygive the boys lots of opportunity to have contact withothers, some of whom may be different from you, butwho, you come to realize, are in many ways still likeyou,” she said. The fall Urban Plunge is a four-dayexperience wherein students volunteer locally—at soupkitchens and shelters—and return to campus in the eve-ning “for prayer and to reflect together about the impactour services had.”

Earlier this month, 24 boys traveled to Victoria,Texas. “The key aspect of the trip is to be displaced,”said Morris. “This is a primarily Mexican communityand the culture is somewhat different. We partner withlocal churches and reside with host families. The boysmay assist with church projects or in nursing homes.”A summer trip takes students to another impoverishedarea—last year, Camden, N.J.—to perform communityservice. “We slept in less than comfortable conditions toemphasize what others are going through.”

Camden—where more than 40 percent of the popula-tion lives below the poverty line, according to CatherineDonley—also receives assistance from students at BishopMcNamara High School in Forestville. Each semester, adozen students spend four days working with those inneed. Learning is emphasized along with service. “Onone of the days, students break up into groups of fourand are allotted the same amount [of money] that a typi-cal family of four on welfare can spend on food a day,approximately $12,” said Donley, campus minister foroutreach. “The students’ eyes are opened when they seehow difficult it is to eat healthily for three meals withsuch little money.”

Walking in another’s shoes also is part of theservice-learning experience at Bladensburg’s ElizabethSeton High School. “We slept on the floor and therewere no showers,” said Laura Tarnosky, service learn-ing coordinator at the all-girls school, about a 24-hourretreat that started with volunteer duties at the DCCentral Kitchen. The 10 girls then spent the night inthe hypothermia shelter at the Father McKenna Centerin Washington the weekend before it opened. “Therewere loud sirens throughout the night and we talkedabout someone’s ability to function the next day withoutmuch sleep. We also talked about what it would be likewondering who was sleeping next to you and whetherthe few belongings you had would be safe.” Afteranother round of volunteering the next morning, the

girls returned to campus “for a simple lunch, discussionand reflection.”

While service learning is mandatory at Seton,Tarnosky helps “guide students toward an experiencethat’s meaningful, not something that will let them justcheck off the box.” The school offers summer service

trips and has begun bringing in speakers to exposestudents to different needs throughout the commu-nity. After a talk by someone with The Bowie InterfaithPantry and Emergency Aid Fund, “students were askedto give up their lunch and experience what some of thepeople we serve go through regularly,” said Tarnosky.Students also made donations to the food pantry.

Someprojects havean international component.In early January, students from St. Vincent Pallotti HighSchool in Laurel traveled to Belize for a week “to be insolidarity with the poor,” said Nancy Vawter, directorof campus ministry. “We believe we have a responsibil-ity to serve and care for the impoverished throughoutthe world.” The experience is eye-opening for studentsas the residents of this small village in Punta Gorda “livein thatch-roof huts with no running water or electric-ity.” Students volunteer at a local school, organizing thelibrary and painting the building.

The trip is transformational, according to Vawter.“One of the girls told me she thought she was comingto serve the poor but discovered that, ‘These people arerich in ways I’ve never seen before. There’s only a dirtroad, they have no shoes and they cook breakfast on anopen fire, but they are so full of love, so full of joy, sofull of peace.’”

“Travel,” wrote Mark Twain, “is fatal to prejudice,bigotry, and narrow-mindedness …” Intent upon creat-ing broad-minded global citizens, many independentschools in Prince George’s County have intensified theirmulticultural emphasis by adding or beefing up travelopportunities for students.

“We want students to perceive themselves as citi-zens of the world as opposed to just this community,”said Patricia Norris Garber, director of admissionsand enrollment management at Bishop McNamaraHigh School. “Travel increases kids’ global awareness,”increasingly important in a world that is becoming moreinterconnected. The Forestville school offers a variety ofprograms designed to expose students to other cultures,build upon classroom learning and provide service-learning opportunities.

Whether domestic day trips or international over-nights, school travel programs can be life changing—student perspectives are altered, lessons are absorbed

and confidence is enhanced. Travel is, in many ways, theepitome of experiential learning.

“Throughouroutdooreducationprogram,studentslearn 21st-century skills, such as collaboration and coop-eration,” said Michael S. Mullin, head of school at HolyTrinity Episcopal Day School, with campuses in Bowieand Glenn Dale. “The program is multifaceted, requir-ing students to think critically, work cooperatively andutilize athletic skills to solve problems.”

Holy Trinity’s outdoor education program begins insecond grade with a day trip to the Patuxent River 4-HCenter in Upper Marlboro and culminates in seventhgrade with a two-night stay at Echo Hill Outdoor Schoolon the Eastern Shore. “This isn’t a stand-alone program.It’s part of our mission and tied into our curriculum,”said Mullin. That mission includes educating the wholechild in a comprehensive, well-rounded program.

The fourth-grade curriculum at Holy Trinity includesMaryland history and ecology, with a unit on streams

and rocks, according to Cindy Canzanella, head of lowerschool. The overnight program at Wabanna Camp andConference Center in Edgewater exposes students to“the past, present and future of the Chesapeake Bay andhow it has influenced the cultural and economic develop-ment of the state. Our students learn about environmen-tal degradation and discover what they can do to protectthe natural resources we have,” she said.

The trip also includes a team-building component.“There’s a huge swing—and I’m talking really high—and students have to figure how to get a classmate up tothe top,” said Canzanella. “Not only does it require youto put a lot of trust in your teammates, but you have tohave the confidence to let go and swing.”

Such activities help to break down barriers—betweenstudents and between students and faculty. “It allowsstudents to see others in a different light,” said Mullin,“and goes a long way to reducing the potential for bul-lying and eliminating cliques.”

Trinity. “I often hear from students that they were ableto do something they never thought they could do … Forsome just spending the night away from their parents isan accomplishment. For others, it’s completing a highropes course or learning a new skill, such as canoeing.But what ties everything together is team building. Nomatter what the activity, if they don’t work together andhelp each other out, they won’t succeed.”

Not only do travel programs offer uniqueexperiences, but the learning is round-the-clock. Schooltravel also provides one-of-a-kind memories that staywith students throughout their lives.In March, some 20 students at Bishop McNamara

High School will travel to Pamplona, Spain as part ofan exchange program that seeks to “bridge the gapbetween two very different cultures and make the worldjust a little smaller,” noted Kristen Nunez, the school’sdirector of communications. The students will live andattend school with their Spanish peers and visit sites inthe Basque region.Last spring, Bishop McNamara families hosted 30

students from Pamplona, home to the annual Running ofthe Bulls. They experienced “American culture, includ-ing education, history, food, and the language, sportsand hobbies,” said Nunez.Not all of the students making the March trip speak

Spanish. “Most are still learning but eager to practicewhat they do know and pick up new skills as they inter-act daily with native speakers,” said foreign-languageteacher Georgina C. Gomez-Bozzo. “What is reallyinteresting is that the school in Pamplona is an ikastola,

a Basque-speaking school. Their students speak bothSpanish and Basque fluently.”Gomez-Bozzo is optimistic that her students “will

gain a sense of how much world there is out there,beyond the confines of their daily lives. I hope that

this experience will whet their appetite for more travelabroad and perhaps inspire them to spend time in aforeign country and to increase their desire to becomemultilingual.”While Bishop McNamara students have previously

experienced the cultural riches of Costa Rica, a newsummer program will allow students to immerse them-selves in climate science. After three weeks studyingMaryland’s temperate climate zone on the Forestvillecampus, students will travel to Costa Rica to explorea more tropical climate. “The rain forest will provideincredible hands-on learning opportunities for our stu-dents,” said Garber. “Students will examine our impacton the environment and explore what our responsibilityis to ensure that these resources are maintained.”Developing leadership skills is the focus of a sum-

mer institute—held at either the University of NotreDame in South Bend, Ind., or St. Edward’s University inAustin, Texas—attended by select students from BishopMcNamara and other Holy Cross-affiliated schoolsthroughout the country. “We work with them as youthleaders so that they see themselves not just as citizens ofMaryland, but of the U.S. and the world,” said Garber.“They develop a deeper understanding of their responsi-bility to their fellow man.”Whether traveling within state or several time zones

away, student learning is enhanced. The experience isenriching, empowering and enlivening, said Garber, andbuilds upon traditional classroom learning. “It opensstudents’ eyes to the world around them and broadenstheir perspective.”

The experience made another student realize thatrelationships are what matter most. “That’s pretty pro-found for a teenager,” said Vawter. “She returned homeintent on working on relationships with her family.”The retreat also bonds students. “I have students

who come from broken places, who are isolated and fac-ing challenges in life. The group experience transformsthem. There is a solidarity that develops. Ultimately, theway these kids learn to love one another and care for oneanother transforms our school. It’s such a rich experi-ence on so many different levels,” she said.“We’ve done hurricane relief after Katrina, tornado

relief in Alabama and Pennsylvania, trips to remoteEskimo villages in Alaska, as well as mission trips toCentral and South America, Africa, China, Europe,and Ukraine,” said George Hornickel, head of schoolat Grace Brethren Christian School in Clinton. “At theend of the book of Matthew, Jesus commands us to takethe Gospel around the world. We take that commandto heart, offering five trips a year for about 50 students,staff and alumni.”Since the program began in 2001, Grace Brethren

has sponsored service-learning trips to roughly a dozenstates and 20 foreign countries. “To support thosetrips, we’ve probably raised about $1 million,” said

Hornickel. The trips are voluntary and often take placeduring Easter break or over the summer. “There is nocomplaining on trips. Students understand they are thereto serve.” It’s not unusual for students to find themselvesin communities where people live in “cardboard or tinshacks or cinder-block houses with just one wire cominginto the house.”Students’ takeaways are significant. “There’s usually

a thankfulness that they live in the United States. Eventhough many of these kids are from middle-class homes,once they see the level of poverty that exists, middle classseems pretty rich,” said Hornickel. “They also developempathy for those they serve.”Service-learning trips to Gambia are part of a larger

effort by students at New Hope Academy in LandoverHills, a “character education school,” according toPrincipal Joy Morrow. Since 2007, groups of students

spend three weeks in the small, East African nationproviding humanitarian aid. “We also raise money tosponsor scholarships for Gambian students, since publiceducation there ends at sixth grade,” said Morrow, “andhave helped to also start several schools and preschools.We are now working toward beginning an orphanagein Gambia.”

Some service-learning projects expose studentsto social and political issues. In September, five studentsfrom Seton High School took part in the 2012 StopModern Slavery Walk on the National Mall. After hear-ing from victims of sexual trafficking and slavery, thestudents met with one of the sisters at the school “fora discussion that helped them process the information,”said Tarnosky.Almost 80 students from BishopMcNamara took part

in the March for Life in Washington on Jan. 25. Theywere joined by students from St. Edward and ArchbishopHoban high schools in Ohio. “This is a great way to showsolidarity with those affected by abortion and to embraceour Holy Cross brother schools,” said Donley.Whether service learning occurs close to home or

around the world, students are discovering that they caninfluence the lives of others, said Tarnosky. “They areyoung, enthusiastic idealists who want to make a differ-ence in the world. It is a joy to watch them blossom.”
