Indian Construction Sector
� Construction sector imp. contributor to GDP with growth rate of 10%.
� Clay fired bricks –most popular building material � Construction technology has changed� Most of the buildings are multi-storeyed frame
structure.� Bricks used as fillers (non-load bearing)
� 5000 brick kilns in Punjab & Haryana� Around 24 billion bricks/year (16% of Country’s production)� 90 million tones soil used annually ( 20-30% saving potential)
Indian Construction Sector
� Concern over depleting resources (clay/ coal)� Initiative by Government (ECBC), promotion of
alternative building materials such as flyash bricks, Fal-G bricks etc.
� Still clay fired solid bricks are most preferred.
CLAY BRICK PRODUCTION-INTERNATIONAL SCENARIO
�In the last 60 years, no. of factors have resulted in radical changes in the European brick industry.
�Nowadays clay brick production process with mechanized and automatic process to get the best quality products.
�Availability of bricks of different shapes and colors.
BRICK MAKING IN INDIA
• No major change in brick making technology as a result only solid clay bricks are mostly in production• Emphasis on production, irrespective of quality• Over exploitation of top soil

• UNDP-GEF has launched a project on “Energy Efficiency Improvements in Indian Brick Industry”, with the focus to promote and establish the use of Resource Efficient Bricks like perforated bricks, hollow bricks, flyash bricks etc.
• Punjab State Council for Science & Technology is the Local Resource Centre for the States of Punjab & Haryana.
