A fantastic event took place at the Academy that saw our students learn about experiences that could effectively shape their future. Prison? Me? No Way! Has been a regular fixture at BDA that sees professionals from all walks of life generously offer their personal time to advise students on the effects of making bad personal choices. The visitors that partook in this event ranged from Police officials, to prison officers, to actors - each of whom were only too kind to share personal experiences and provide valuable and extensive information. One demonstration came from the EMS (Electronic Monitoring Services), who were quite specific and detailed in showing how electronic tags attached to ex-offenders worked. Scott Elliot from the organisation explained how precise the devices are programmed to function and shared some stories about how tagged individuals have tried to evade being monitored with no success. The demonstration proved to be an eye-opener as it showed the students how making bad choices could lead to a situation that hinders one’s personal freedom. Another enlightening demonstration came from four young actors who performed “Street Scene” – a play that follows a story about status, anti- social behaviour and what good and bad decisions could lead to. All actors spoke candidly about their challenging pasts and it was inspiring to see how they turned the negatives into something more profound. The Actors Yousseff Berouain spoke of a time at the tender age12 years old, when he was arrested for the possession of a firearm. It was whilst being detained he re-evaluated the direction in which his life was headed and made the decision to do better for himself. He has now starred in several TV productions including Eastenders and Doctors. Kyle Summercorn had a similar experience to Yousseff and spent most of his youth misbehaving and making bad choices. He was given his big break after he courageously approached notable film star and director, Noel Clarke (Adulthood, Kidulthood) who saw the potential in him and offered him a role. Jade Sozou and Dean Douglas also hailed from the same type of background as the other two actors. Jade mixed in with the wrong crowd as a young teenager, getting in trouble with the law, and Dean was excluded from school when he was just in Year 7. Needless to say, the turnaround and direction that all four individuals are now heading towards, has been nothing short of inspiring and admirable. We wish them every success in their future endeavours. 6 th March 2015 1 Prison? Me? No Way!

eye-opener as it showed the students how making bad choices could lead to a situation that hinders one’s personal freedom. Another enlightening demonstration came

from four young actors who performed “Street Scene” – a play that follows a story about status, anti- social behaviour and what good and bad decisions could lead to.

more profound.

The Actors Yousseff Berouain spoke of a time at the tender age12 years old, when he was arrested for the possession of a firearm. He has now starred in several TV productions including Eastenders and Doctors. Kyle Summercorn had a similar experience to

Last Wednesday, a team of five Year 10 students visited the Loftus Road stadium to take part in the first stage of The Enterprise Challenge. The scheme is an annual event, run by The Premier League and supported by the Department of Business. The completion gives students the chance to develop their knowledge of principles of Business and self-employment. On the day, the teams were assigned the task of thinking of innovative ideas to attract more families to QPR home games. They then had to present their ideas to a panel of judges made up of local Business people. Despite facing tough completion from six other teams - including Phoenix High School and Hammersmith academy - the judges decided Burlington Danes Academy

had produced the strongest presentation and announced them the winners.

Jordan Bailey, Jayden Ritchie, Yonis Ahmed, Parvez Miah and Mohamed Jamal, will now go forward to represent QPR in the next stage of the competition, taking place at the Emirates Stadium on Monday 23rd of March. Congratulations to the boys for their superb efforts and good luck in the next round!

MR RIBTON RECEIVES PERMANENT HEADSHIP

We are extremely thrilled to announce that Mr Ribton, formerly serving as acting principal, has now been awarded the headship role permanently. It goes without saying that the academy has benefited greatly from the core values and ethos instilled by Mr Ribton. On finding out he was appointed, he said: I’m very grateful for this wonderful opportunity to lead such a fantastic school as we become an all-through academy. The support from staff

and staff governors, parents and pupils has

been both overwhelming and humbling. There is no doubt the academy will continue to maintain it's outstanding status as Mr Ribton holds this position. His dedication and commitment is clear for all to see and we wish him every success for his future at BDA. A letter has been sent to inform parents of this news.

As you know this week has been book week at BDA! Well done to all the students that have got involved and entered competitions.

Throughout the week, students have been designing their own book covers and writing short stories. We have had every genre of book from sci-fi horror to werewolf thriller. There has been some fantastic work, which will be on display in the library next week!

Meanwhile, year seven students have been making their favourite book characters as potatoes in our house competition. Lots of the school’s favourite characters made an appearance including Geek Girl, Wimpy Kid and Coraline. Many of these fantastic creations can be found on the BDA library Twitter account (@BDALibrary1).

As well as competitions we had two brilliant visits. Tuesday saw the author Bali Rai coming to the school to talk to year nine students about being an author and creative writing. It is great to see lots of

students now borrowing and reading his books! Writer and spoken-word poet Kenny Baraka visited on Wednesday to work with year eight and nine students. They were given lots of brilliant tips for improving their poetry and writing gripping first lines for their stories.

World Book Day was on Thursday. Teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters and we had some brilliant fancy dress. Everyone from Harry Potter to Batman was in attendance! Students voted for their favourite characters and the results will be

announced here next week.

Finally, don’t forget to get your free book token from your form tutor. You can swap this for a free book at a local book shop!

BBC NEWS SCHOOL REPORT

Newsletter 6th March 2015

BBC School Report has been running at BDA for the last few years and this year a select group of year 11s have been chosen for the challenge.

They are going to be gathering news stories from inside school and the wider world to report back to the students at BDA. The student involved will be creating vlogs (video blogs) in series to document the year 11s run up to their mocks and GCSEs examinations. They will be talking about how they are feeling and about the pressures upon them

and how they are coping with it. Not only is this great for the year

11s to have a voice, but it is also an opportunity for the younger years to see exactly what is involved in these very important exams. News day is on 19th March and the BBC will be selecting news

stories from across the country to broadcast on every station. In preparation for this, year 11s are also creating a weekly news bulletin for the tannoy on Fridays and collecting news that they

think is important and relevant to young people. All of this is tied in with Media GCSE which is why these particular students have been offered the chance to take part.

Page 5: Prison? Me? No Way!

Last week Friday, 50 students participated in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh training provided by Learn Outdoors.

All students involved had an amazing time and the feeling of enthusiasm was apparent by the way they executed each task given to them.

The even was all in preparation for the training weekend they will be attending on the 20th – 21st March in Epping Forest.

Science Club will be running once again every Monday.

Next week, our scientists will be demonstrating how to construct plant and animal cells models from PVA glue.

Join them in room 119 from 3:45 – 4:45pm and get creative!

Library Book Review Coraline – By Neil Gaiman

This is a really creepy book about a girl named Coraline (who gets annoyed when everyone calls her Caroline), who finds a mysterious doorway when exploring her house. At first the door opens up onto a

brick wall, but when she opens it later on it opens up into another house, a little like her own but with some very weird differences, with some very weird people living in it...

At first it is easy to go back and forth between the two houses, but when something happens that means she has to go back to the creepy house she ends up trapped there and has to go on a scary

adventure to get her old life back. The only friend she has on this mission is a very aloof talking cat who seems to think he’s very superior to Coraline, and all humans.

The characters in this book are all really interesting, some of them are really creepy and scary, and others are just weird but funny. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure or horror books – I really liked it even though I normally don’t like scary books. It also has really weird pictures at the beginning of each chapter which make it even better! It’s also

not a very long book, so I would recommend it to anyone who likes a fast-paced, action-packed story.
