The dominance of India’s printing industry hubs is slowly fading away. Once well-known places for printing Sivakasi, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi are saturated

with printing presses and the main players in these centres are facing dearth of work and planning to change from their present locations. Scene at Chennai is so pathetic that some main players there are on the verge of close down or closed. However, the industry in smaller cities like Coimbatore and Cochin show double digit growth.

Till a decade ago, most print buyers from Kerala and many from southern India used to go to Chennai for quality printing jobs; and for bulk work to Sivakasi. This trend was reversed after 2000 as well-equipped printing presses mushroomed in new hubs like Cochin, Coimbatore and several smaller cities in India. When people have the facilities to do good printing in their neighborhood, why would they go distant places. Besides, they can save money in transportation and commuting.

It seems that four-colour printing is shifting from tier 1 cities to tier 2 cities like Cochin, Coimbatore and Ahmadabad. The most important reason for this shifting is the high cost of real estate in mega cities like Mumbai and Delhi. The existing presses in the large metros also find it extremely difficult to expand their premises due high property value. At the same time in smaller cities the property value is less and there is enough space to establish state-of-the-art printing presses. Few players in the traditional printing hubs who have gone for value-added printing are showing growth. The recent sales of brand new four-colour machines in the North East or interior parts of Kerala show that multi-colour printing is spreading to tier 3 cities also.

Moreover, the spread of Internet, other communication technologies and infrastructure development have given the print entrepreneurs a vast corridor to set up printing units at any part of India and do printing jobs for clients anywhere.Good growth in the printing industryin smaller cities shows the trend is gaining momentum. The booming Indian economy, increasing consumerism, entry of global brands in the country and opening of the sector to foreign investors are bound to offer growth opportunities to the industry in newer centres.

The development of new printing hubs has helped Indian Printing Industry to grow at a rate of 12% per annum. The current annual turnover of the industry is more than `70,000 crores.

President’s Desk

Dear friends,

The 2ndManaging Committee Meeting of the 2014-16 term was held on February 7, 2015 at IMA House and discussed about acquiring the adjoining space to the office. All Managing Committee members were in favour of buying the space of around 430 Sq. ft. and the price

for the property is being negotiated with the owners.KMPA observed the Printers’ Day on February 24 with a function held at the association hall.

K.V. Joseph of KK Printers, a veteran printer in Kochi and a close confidant of late Jose Joseph, was honoured during the function.

Former Joint Director of Industries & Commerce Department, Adv. B. Prasannakumar was a special invitee at the function. He spoke elaborately on various subsidies offered by government for small scale entrepreneurs. Members present at the function had the opportunity to clear their doubts on getting the govt. subsidy and to ask about the ways to go about it.

Well, I must say that KMPA is functioning with more vigor in uniting the printers’ community in Kerala. The association is trying to bring in more members to its fold and recently some new members were inducted.

At the national level, KMPA is functioning as a loyal affiliate body to AIFMP. KMPA GC members are regularly attending the Federation’s Governing Council meetings. KMPA has also decided to join the South India Printers Association (SIPA) mooted by the Immediate Past President of AIFMP Mr. ASMG Ashokan. It will be a body of printers’of South India. The proposed association will be a good platform for printers from the region. It will strengthen the ties between the printers in South India. The new association held its first meeting at Madurai on March 15, 2015.

A strong delegation of KMPA visited PrintPack India 2015 at Noida. The show was a big hit and it proved Print Industry in India is progressing well with ‘Make in India’ products gaining popularity. Our machines and technology were prominent in the show competing with other world class products. The exhibition also generated a good volume of business.

The Printing Technology courses under Additional Skills Acquisition Programme (ASAP) are progressing and the first batch of the students are soon going to come out as their exams will soon be over. The exams at Trivandrum centre are completed; exams at Ernakulam, Trichur and Calicut centres are yet to be finished. KMPA has to sign a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government to continue the programme as ASAP wanted some changes in the conduct of the courses. ASAP wants three separate courses in Pre-Press, Press and Post-Press, unlike the single all-inclusive one we had been conducting so far. The draft of the MoUis being prepared.

Some of the members of KMPA will surely be attending the International Printing Technology Exhibition in Guangdong, China. Bon voyage to all those going to China.

Summer heat has started already and soon be unbearable. For the printers summer is the time to make hay. Printing presses get more work during this period of the year. The only worrying factor is power cut. As Kerala depends mainly on hydel electricity, power cuts (scheduled or unscheduled) are usual during summer due to the lack of sufficient water in the reservoirs. So, all of you adopt ways to cut power consumption and get ready for the heat.

Happy summer days,

G. Venugopal,(President, KMPA)

PrintPack 2015 proves PrintThe very fact that this year’s PrintPack India generated `300 crore business proves Printing Industry in India is not only looking vibrant but in the coming years also it will remain bullish. While buyers queued up for new machines there were few takers for second-hand and used machinery. The expo recorded a footfall of 85,000 visitors.

By P.S. Rajan The first thing I noticed at Print-Pack India 2015 is a ‘shift of attitude’ among the visitors – they

were keen on acquiring new machines, not second-hand machines. There were not many enquiries for used machines unlike the previous PrintPacks. I found few people at the used machine section while hundreds of them milling around the booths that exhibited latest products.

The talk that ‘print is dying’ by certain industry watchers is once again proved wrong by the roaring business deals witnessed at the PrintPack India 2015. The total business achieved at the PrintPack is around `300 crores.

There has been an increase of 25 percent of business in comparison to PPI 2013, IPAMA, the organizers said. According to feedback reports received from IPAMA, the inflow of quality visitors, who came to witness the exhibition, was highly encouraging. A majority of the exhibitors and business

visitors rated the show as ‘good’ to ‘excellent’.

The main objective of IPAMA, which represents a major portion of the Indian graphic arts industry, was to promote the industry in domestic and global markets. In pursuance of this goal, the 12th edition of PrintPack India was organised at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida from February 11-15, 2015.

The show was organised on a net area of 18,647 square metres (sq m) as against 13,871 sq m in the last edition. The gross area utilised for exhibition and related activities were more than 50,000 sq m. The recorded visitor footfall was above 85,000.

The exhibitors represented all Indian states. Foreign exhibitors came from China, Dubai, Hong Kong, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Sharjah, South Korea, Taiwan, UK, USA, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and many more countries.

For the first time two foreign offset

Industry ‘alive and kicking’machine manufactures participated at an Indian exhibition with live demo of their latest machines. Most of the exhibitors said they had very good response from the visitors.

The central stage of attraction was four colour machines of Ryobi and Komari, and the latest innovations in digital printing techhnology. Ryobi MHI exhibited Offset UV printing machine 924 which bagged good orders. Ryobi President and Chairman came for the launch of the machine. This shows the how much international manufacturers value Indian market.Komori exhibited two four colour machines at Printpack. Komori also secured good orders during the show.

The innovative product of the exhibition was MGI digital foiling, including personalization, to a new feature on its JET Varnish 3D inkjet spot coater. The French manufacturer showed a prototype inline foil option for the The visitor footfall was above 85,000 at PrintPack India 2015.

JET Varnish. The foiling system works at the same speed as the JET Varnish and lays down an inkjet varnish layer as the ‘glue’ base for the foil, with heated rollers that move in and out of position to apply the foil.In standard spot coating mode the JET Varnish can produce up to 3,000sph in B2 format. MGI system doesnot require special consumables and works with standard foils available in the market. The variable data hot foil stamping gives good result.

The Canon displayed its new compact Image Press C6000 and Xerox launched its Color C70. Xerox Colour C70 can print the widest range of applications in this market space, including running synthetics, vinyl, window clings, carbonless paper, etc. It has the newly-developed,heat-efficient IH fuser, which does not require pre-heatingthat helps reduce power consumption in standby mode by 44% compared to a resistance heating device.

In the Post-Press Indian manufactures also launched some new products. WelboundWorldwide launched three new models of PUR perfect binders. These machines are designed to compete with the imported post-press perfect binders. Megabound increased their product range with different types of case-making machines and semi-automatic sheet pasting machines.

The Chennai based Reprographic Systems had a huge stall at the expo. They displayed Chinese foil-stamping and German drilling machines.

A highlight of PPI 2015 was the NPES-ICC (The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies- International Color Consortium) conference on Colour Management, organised on February 12, 2015 in conjunction with PPI 2015, and led by prominent colour management experts.

Secondly, for the first time, IPAMA organised a full-day Symposium and Seminar on Web Offset Printing, themed ‘Together We Grow’. Held on February 13 in association with the Vibes Academy, Chennai, the event was a success with participation from more than 120 trade and industry representatives.

St. John Maria Viani is known for his dedication to community uplift by creating employment for

ordinary masses in small industry units. Viani Printings, one of the prominent printing presses in Kochi, is named after the Saint who lived in the 17th century in France. Viani Printings following the Saint’s noble path provides a living for more than 95 people working at the press. That’s the spirit and soul of Viani Printings.

Viani Printings, Kochi is one of the leading Printing and Publishing House in Kerala located at Kochi under the management of Ernakulam & Angamaly Archdiocese of Syro-Malabar Church. Viani Printings is a branch of the registered charitable Trust – Ernakulam Archdiocesan Publication Trust, in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly.

Initially, the Viani Press was formulated for the Printing the

Soul and Spirit of VianiFrom a humble beginning in 1966, Viani Printings in Kochi has grown as a full-fledged printing & publishing house with the most-modern machines and facilities. The Church-managed establishment will reach the milestone of 50th Golden Year next year and is in the expansion mode with “`30-crore state-of-the-art printing, Notebook making, Flexo printing, Packaging and Printing College” project at Choondy near Aluva.

“Sathyadeepam” weekly and “Light of Truth” fortnightly and later on the press entered into commercial printing field. “This establishment is the result of a long-cherished dream of the Late Cardinal Joseph Parecattil. Viani came into existence in 1966. Next year, we will reach the milestone of 50th Golden Year,” says Fr. Francis Arickal, the current Managing Director of Viani Printings, sitting in his office at the premises near Ernakulam North Flyover.

Sitting across the table of Fr. Arickal, I studied his face. His mannerisms and way of talking reveal that he is a strict disciplinarian. He came to Viani nearly two years ago after years of management experience at various Church institutions, including some printing establishments. A priest in his early fifties, he is familiar with all modern electronic gadgets and active in social media. He manages the unit with

all these gadgets wired on to his ears and his fingers deftly moving on the laptop keyboard. Despite interrupting phone calls, Fr. Arickal continues conversation with me answering my questions effortlessly in his measured voice. His answers are to the point.

How does he manage such a huge organization? “I am not just sitting here on my chair. I go around and see, observe and talk to all the employees. Their feedback is important to run this organization without any trouble,” Fr. Arickal says. Also, he has delegated the responsibility of managing each section such as marketing, pre-press, printing, binding, delivery and other office affaires to section heads. A review meeting is convened with the section heads every morning at 9 to discuss the day-today work schedules and other things.

Viani Printings is having a good

team of professionals heading the various departments like Administration, Accounts, Sales & Marketing, Production & Technical, Post Press and Dispatching etc with strong, technically qualified and dedicated staff in all departments.

Fr. Arickal says Viani’s employees are its strength and the management treats them well. Every year, there is a salary revision on the basis of the performance of the staff and profit made by the establishment. “We give all facilities like PF, bonus, HRA, gratuity to the employees. Viani has started its

own insurance scheme for the staff. I personally believe, if the management looks after the employees’ well they reciprocate with good performance at work. These are the reasons our employees stick to this organization for long time. Some of them are working here for more than 40 years.”

“From our humble beginning in 1966, Viani has grown as a full-fledged printing & publishing house with the most-modern machines and facilities,” Fr. Arickal says as a prelude to explaining the ongoing expansion and modernization of the organization.

“This facility in the city does not have scope for further expansion because of lack of space. So we are developing a state-of-the-art project at Choondy near Aluva, the satellite city of Cochin. The project consists of a facility for bulk production of note books and textbooks, a complete printing and packaging unit and a Printing College. Planned in a 5-acre plot, the project will be completed in 3 to 4 years. Work has already begun, new machineries have arrived. We are constructing the facility like a factory. The construction will be finished very soon as the facility will be built with pre-fabricated materials and can be completed in 30 days,” Fr. Arickal expressed his optimism.

“The 15,000 sq.ft building will not have any center pillars,” said Fr. Arickal. “The first section of the facility will be the notebook production unit. The machine for the unit has already arrived from Line O’ Matic. The Fully Automatic Exercise Book Machine Combo RB104-Nova RB120 is a huge one and we need a lot of space to install it and to run it smoothly. This facility is the first of its kind in Kerala.”

The Line O’ Matic machine consists of shaft-less reel unwinding stand, ruling and flexo printing tower, cross cutting unit, sheet overlapping unit, sheet counting and collating unit, one inserter

for pre-printed index sheet and one inserter for pre-printed title cover, wire stitching unit, folding unit, square back pressing unit, front cutting unit, book separating cutting unit, book delivery table, waste removal system, centralized control panel (PLC). Fr. Arickal says: “On this wonderful machine, you just have to load the paper reel and put it on. After ruling, stapling, binding and cutting the finished product is out with a few personnel to handle it. In an hour, 18,000 notebooks can be produced.”

Viani management has ambitious plans to further expand the Choondy facility with a complete Packaging Unit, which will come up in two or three years. “We have chosen the machines and the complete blueprint of the packaging unit is ready. We are planning to produce all kinds of packaging from mono-cartons for toothpaste or medicines to bigger duplex boxes,” Fr. Arickal said. “We also have plan for a Flexo Printing unit. This kind of printing is done on different substrates other than paper, for example on plastic covers, other packaging materials etc. In Kerala there is no such facility, except for some very small units. So, Viani is going to be the first major player in this category in Kerala.”

Part of the project at Choondy is a Printing College – a complete coaching &training facility for Printing Technology students. Kurias N. Chacko, a printing industry veteran and Manager – Technical of Viani Printings and the Dean of Studies at Vi-APT (Viani Institute of Advanced Printing Technology), says about the institute: “The institute Vi-APT is functioning since 1967 at Viani Printings. This year we have 15 students; once the construction at Choondy is completed the classrooms will be shifted there. Now, Vi-APT has the recognition and support of Central Government scheme called Modular Employable Skill (MES). Vi-APT provides one-year intensive training to students on all aspects of printing – graphics, plate-making, printing and binding. English language is also taught. Classes are conducted every day except Sundays – from 9am to 12.30 pm theory classes are held and practical training from 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm. By the time the students complete the one-year

course, they are capable of working at any printing press.”

Fr. Paul Chakkian is one of the Asst. Directors of Viani Printings and is the Principal of the institute. Says Fr. Chakkian: “The ultimate aim of education is human refinement. The objective of education is to form a society of individuals with positive work culture. So the educational process in and outside our formal schools should concentrate on inculcating concepts, abilities, attitudes, values and above all specific skills. That’s what we are doing at Vi-APT. Being a Church-run institution, Vi-APT gives priority to school dropouts, economically backward and marginalized students.”

While the Choondy venture is progressing, Viani Printings is undergoing a total remodeling and streamlining of factory layout. “Till recently, the machines and personnel were scattered inside the premises resulting in lack of coordination and delay in completing the work. After I visited Japan recently, I adopted certain way of functioning I saw in a printing press there,” Fr. Arickal said. “You

will see the changes when you visit our premises,” he says with a smile and gestures to Kurias to take me on the tour.

Later, accompanied by Fr. Bijoy Palatty, one of the Asst. Directors of Viani Printings and a qualified Sound Engineer, I was taken on a round at the premises. Fr. Palatty explains about the system and infrastructure of Viani Printings and directs his photographer colleague, another young priest Fr. Aajo Joy Therully, to take snaps around the facility.

Kurias explained me how Fr. Arickal shuffled the whole set up to streamline the operations at Viani. “He housed the two web-offset machines – Manugraph City Line Express 35 and the recently installed Pressline Prima 36 – in one section. So that the personnel at this can have better coordination and they can handle both machines. The Komori Lithron S 26 and Mitsubishi 4-colour sheet-fed offset machine are kept in nearby spaces. All other smaller printing machines (Manugraph Print Magic 274 HF, HMT’s SOM 136 sheet-fed offset, Single Color Dominant 715 A and Abdick Mini Offset) are kept in one area.

All printing machines are of the ground floor level,” Kurias said.

The pre-press and designing sections are moved to first floor level. Pre-press and CtP units (TechNova Violet and Kodak Thermal units) and DTP & Designing Departments are accommodated in adjacent areas. In the same area plate-making machines, including Protek plate exposing system Qax90 of 90cm X 110cm and a monotype machine, are kept.

The post-press section is on the second floor, where a service lift hauls printed materials up and down. The well-equipped post-press unit has 30 staff members. A Welbound 6-station saddle stitcher with 3 knives line cutting, Welbound 12 station gathering and

side-pinning machine, sheet folding machines, 6-clamp perfect binding unit, single clamp perfect binding unit, other saddle stitching units, wire stitching machines, lamination machines (thermal and wet), packing and bundling machines are among the highly sophisticated Viani post-press section.

We are at another amazing facility at Viani – their storage area. “We have adopted vertical stacking of paper rolls, instead of horizontal, so that we can prevent the core squeezing damages of reels and also can save lot of space,” said Kurias while showing me the paper reels stacked at 7 levels on the huge ground floor space used as the storage area. A Godrej hydraulic type reel shifting unit with fork lift capacity of 3.5 tones is

used to stack the paper reels. As the tour ended, I am back at Fr.

Arickal’s office. He invites me for a tea and continues the conversation. “Viani Printing’s slogan is ‘We Print your Mind,” Fr. Arickal says. “That means whatever the customer thinks, Viani reproduces in print.”

“We have all types of clients – from corporate companies to individual print buyers. Viani has no dearth of work as the printing jobs for the Church are itself enough to run two shifts here. Of course we do other commercial printing works, including orders from customers abroad. Viani possess an export license, so clients in foreign countries who want quality printing jobs come to us,” Fr. Arickal says while showing me a fantastic brochure printed on Viani’s Komori Lithron S 26 for a client in Australia.

“Printing is a highly competitive field in Kerala. Viani’s policy is not to indulge in any unhealthy competition like price under-cutting or wooing clients of other printing presses. As I said before the printing jobs of the Church itself is of huge volume. Sunday Catechism textbooks, other Church publications, religious pamphlets and ceremonial literature are plenty of works. Besides, our capacity to do any kind of jobs provides us with unhindered supply of printing works. Four daily newspapers (Deccan Chronicle, Veekshanam,

Understanding Synthetic PaperSynthetic Paper or Non-Tearable

or Tear Resistant Papers are all different names for the same

product used in different context based on the application that they are being used for. Synthetic paper industry is doing wonders in various fields from as simple as a business card to as complicated as a packaging solution for Medical Devices. Synthetic Paper comes in various types as given below; their broad classification will help us understand their application and advantagesbetter for each application.

Broad Types of Synthetic Paper1. Polyethylene based 2. Polypropylene based3. Polyester based4. Paper based5. Silica basedThe chart below is a snapshot of

the more widely used synthetic papers in the printing industry and their top applications. There are many more variants like one of them made of nylon which can be used for lamps and has

some amazing features outside the printing industry.

Also it is important to note that there is no water tight compartment where one could say that this product can only work for this application. Actually giving an example a Marathon Bib or a Photography Album or a Business Card can use either of these products from the list above but the actual product that should or would be used would depend on the brand (user), the printer and the paper supplier.

IThe Synthetic Paper has to be understood much more and its applications should be considered by every printer no matter big or small in how he can bring value to his customer by the use of this product either by reducing the cost or increasing efficiency or reducing loses or by plain printing less of the same for a higher or longer output.

For example, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) started using Adhesive Posters made of Synthetic Paper instead of Conventional

Paper at a higher initial cost but the output and the life of the poster exceeded the life of a normal paper poster more than 3 times over.

So many times it is not only about a higher priced product but it is about how this product can bring value to that particular application.

Like in the era when digital printing was new in India and offset printers slowly but steadily accepted and embraced the digital technology, Synthetic Paper will also be widely accepted by printers soon, while natural paper will also continue to have its use for printing.

Kerala Master Printers Association (KMPA) had been commemorating the Printers’

Day on February 24 for the last couple of years regularly. This year KMPA decided the remembrance of the Father of Printing Johannes Guttenberg should be more than just a ritual – it should also be a day to honour a prominent printer among us. KMPA chose K.V. Joseph, a veteran printer and owner of K.K. Printers, Ernakulam and a close friend of KMPA patriarch Late Jose Joseph, as the most deserving personality to be honoured on that day.

Another addition to the usual Printers’ Day celebration was a lecture by Adv. B. Prasannakumar, former Joint Director of Industries & Commerce Department, Govt. of Kerala, on support given by government through subsidies for entrepreneurs.

KMPA members gathered at the association hall for of the Printers’ Day function at 7pm on February 24. President G. Venugopal in his Welcome Address remembered Jose Joseph, the pillar of KMPA who passed away on January 15 and explained the significance of honouring a prominent printer like K.V. Joseph on Printers’ Day.

Joseph Muttathottil, IPP of KMPA, talked elaborately and in a lucid manner on the Father of Printing and his contribution to the world. He said the Time Magazine had named

Final item on agenda was Adv. Prasannakumar’s lecture on subsidies. After the one-hour session, participants cleared their doubts on availing the government subsidies and how to go about it. (A detailed essay by Prasannakumar on the talk he delivered is given on page 23).

After Vote of thanks by General Secretary Manmohan Shenoy the day’s programme was ended at 9 pm.
