PERFORMANCE TESTS
STALL SPEED TEST
Mazda
1. Ensure all fluids are at proper level. Bring vehicle to normal operating temperature. Attach tachometer to engine. Apply emergency brake and depress brake pedal.
2. Place select lever in "D". Gradually depress accelerator pedal. Read and note engine speed as soon as engine becomes constant and release accelerator pedal. This must be done within 5 seconds.
3. Set engine at idle. Place shift selector in "N" and allow a minimum of one minute cool down period. Repeat procedure for each gear and compare reading with specifications. See STALL SPEED SPECIFICATIONS (MAZDA) table. If not within specifications, see STALL SPEED TEST EVALUATION (MAZDA) .
STALL SPEED SPECIFICATIONS (MAZDA)
Nissan
1. Ensure all fluids are at proper level. Set parking brake and block wheels. Install tachometer. Start engine and place transmission in "D". Apply brake and accelerate to wide-open throttle. Read and note stall speed, and immediately release accelerator pedal.
2. Repeat procedure for all gears. Allow ample cool down time. Compare reading with specifications. See STALL SPEED SPECIFICATIONS (NISSAN) table. If not within specifications, see STALL SPEED TEST EVALUATION (NISSAN) .
STALL SPEED SPECIFICATIONS (NISSAN)
CAUTION: Stall test should only be performed as a last resort due to high temperatures which are generated. NEVER hold throttle wide open for more than 5 seconds. DO NOT test more than 2 gears without driving vehicle to cool off fluids.

STALL SPEED TEST EVALUATION (MAZDA)
Above Specification In All Gears
Insufficient line pressure is indicated. Check for worn oil pump, leakage from oil pump control valve, transmission case, stuck pressure regulator valve or direct clutch slipping.
Above Specification In "D", "2" & "1"
Check for slipping rear clutch.
Above Specification In "D" Range Only
Check for slipping one-way clutch.
Above Specification In "2" Range Only
Check for slipping brake band.
Above Specification In "R" Range Only
Check for slipping low and reverse brake and/or front clutch. Perform road test to determine if this is caused by low and reverse brake or front clutch. If effective engine braking in "1", front clutch is slipping. If no engine braking in "1", low and reverse brake is slipping.
Below Specification
Engine out of tune and/or slipping of one-way clutch within torque converter.
STALL SPEED TEST EVALUATION (NISSAN)
1. If stall speed test in "D" is too low, lock-up clutch is dragging, converter one-way clutch is defective or engine is not performing properly. If stall speed test in "D" is too high, direct clutch, forward clutch (rear) or one-way clutch slips. Proceed to next step. If stall speed test in "D" is okay, proceed to step 3 .
2. If stall speed test in "1" is okay, the one-way clutch is defective. If stall speed test in "1" is not okay, direct clutch or forward clutch (rear) is slipping. Check stall speed in "R". If okay, forward clutch (rear) is defective. If not okay, direct clutch is defective.
3. Check stall speed in "R". If stall speed is too low, lock-up clutch is dragging, converter one-way clutch is defective or, engine is not performing properly. If stall speed is too high, high-reverse clutch (front) or low and reverse brake slips. Proceed to next step.
4. Road test vehicle to determine whether high-reverse clutch (front) or low and reverse brake slips. With selector lever in "1", if no engine braking is present, low and reverse brake slips. If effective engine

braking is present, high-reverse clutch (front) slips.
5. If converter one-way clutch is frozen, vehicle will have poor high speed performance. If converter one-way clutch is slipping, vehicle will be sluggish up to 30-40 MPH. Repair as necessary.
HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TEST
1. Install pressure gauge to line pressure port. See Fig. 12 . Check pressure at idle and stall speed with engine at normal operating temperature.
2. On Nissan 2WD Pickup and 200SX, support transmission with a jack. Remove right rear engine mounting insulator. It may be necessary to remove crossmember assembly. Remove line pressure plug and install an angled adapter and pressure gauge. Install crossmember (if removed). Place a block of wood between transmission and remove insulator.
3. On Nissan 4WD Pickup/Pathfinder, remove control cable bracket. Remove line pressure plug. Install an angled adapter and pressure gauge.
4. Ensure pressures are within specifications. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TEST SPECIFICATIONS . Pressure readings should increase steadily as car speed increases under light load.

ROAD TEST
Test drive vehicle. Compare vehicle speeds and gearshift at different throttle positions. On models with control units, disconnect control units for shift speeds tables and connect control units for graphs in illustrations. Ensure values are within specified ranges. See SHIFT SPEED SPECIFICATIONS . See Fig. 13 -Fig. 25 .

GOVERNOR PRESSURE TEST
1. Governor pressure test need only be used if vehicle shift speeds are different than specifications. Install Adapter (49-HO75-406) and pressure gauge in governor pressure port located on left rear of transmission.
2. Drive vehicle in "D". Read governor pressures at specified speeds. See GOVERNOR PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS table. If not within specifications, clean and repair governor assembly. Repeat test. Replace governor if necessary.
