Wonderful HSC Success! It was wonderful to see the 2018 HSC results arrive yesterday and I am looking forward to catching up with the boys today for our annual celebratory BBQ. Year 12 have done extraordinarily well and have built on last year’s stellar results. Of the 112 students who sat the HSC exams the boys achieved 52 Band 6 and notional Band 6 results and 129 Band 5 results. It was also wonderful to see such a low percentage of Band 1 and 2 scores. Kevin Xu was named as a state top achiever and came 6th in the state in Standard English. Even though the media analysis of the results is essentially flawed as it only looks at Band 6 results, Ashfield Boys outperformed the state average by a significant amount. The SMH “success” rate for NSW is 5.47% and for our students it was 7.27%. Last year the school was identified in the SMH analysis as one which was “highly above average”. This year’s set of results are even better. I am very proud of the boys and their achievements. I am equally proud of the boys for whom even getting the credential itself meant overcoming huge obstacles. Congratulations! Public Education Scholarship Congratulations to Year 11 Prefect Daniel Lahood who has revived a scholarship from the Public Education Foundation. These scholarships are highly competitive and quite prestigious. Daniel has been awarded $2,500 to fund his current and future university study. Daniel will formally receive the scholarship at an award ceremony next year.

Year 11 Mathematics Standard 2 has begun their HSC course this term with an investigation into the mathematical theory of Networks. The students were able to apply what they learnt to a diverse range of networks in areas including communications, transport, distribution businesses, social media and service delivery. This culminated in an in-depth project looking at providing a range of options for constructing a school communications network. The project was well received by students and many impressive proposals were submitted.

YEAR 9 VISUAL ARTS
Year 9 Visual Arts students have developed their skills in printmaking this term. They have been introduced to various processes of printmaking such as lino carving and screen printing. Students now understand how to create reduction prints with multiple colours as well as screen printing onto fabric such as T-shirts and cloth bags.

8R OLIVER TWIST STOP MOTION FILMS
8 Rose has been reading Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens. Their challenge was to choose an event from the text and adapt that for Stop Motion. Their movies needed to reflect their knowledge about the times of Charles Dickens and the type of life he and others lived. Students used plasticine, coloured paper, lego and whiteboards to recreate the scene of their choice for their presentation to the class.

HISTORY IRON MAN 2018
On Friday 8th December the History and PDHPE Faculty hosted the annual History Iron Man Competition. The competition was a series of physical, problem solving and code breaking challenges based on history and was consistent with the course content the students studied throughout the year. Students moved rapidly through five stations where points were allocated based on student performance. Once all the stations were completed five winners were declared based on who had accumulated the most points. Five students were then set a further round of challenges in the hall to determine the History Iron Man of 2018. It was a tough final with several challenges presented to the students. They had to compete against each other to construct a model pyramid, assemble an archaeological artefact and test their understanding of time and sequence. Points were awarded for each challenge. The final was concluded with 25 questions from history which came down to the final few questions for a winner to be declared. Congratulations to finalists Paul Jung, Brian Pollock, Chander Luu and Edrian Conde who all came close to winning but the History Iron Man winner for 2018 was Noah Anheluk. Well done to all the boys on the day. They competed with enthusiasm and in good spirit. At the conclusion of the competition each class nominated a team for a futsal round robin competition in the gym. The winner of the competition then faced a staff team as a finale for the day. For the first time, the students beat the teachers 2 – 1 in a very close game.

This year has been a big year in the Library. We have added over a thousand new titles, including fiction and non-fiction, to the Library and the Renaissance Reading Program. We have also added an advanced reading program for our Year 9 and 10 students to engage in more sophisticated texts in preparation for their senior studies. As the program grows, the students have continued to read and quiz on more and more books. This year we have over 50 students who have read over 1 million words with many more not that far behind. Once again, the data from the Renaissance Reading program clearly shows that engagement in the program leads to improvements in reading age and comprehension. Therefore, all students have been encouraged to borrow books from the Library this week and to continue to read over the school holidays. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday. The Library Team
