Student Leaders Projects

In week 8 on Wednesday afternoon, 21eager parents filed into the music room.Sure, they’d all heard the marimba bandperform, but what exactly have their childrenbeen involved in? What’s it all about? Well, this was my focus, to show them. As mystudent leadership project, I organised anevent to involve our parents in this unique opportunity. I mean, how many people actually get the opportunity to play themarimbas? It takes skill - as our parents soon learnt - and hardwork, and all people see is the finished product. So, I invited theparents of the kids in marimba band to come and share the funexperience with us, hoping to get around 9 parent replies.Obviously, the turn out I got completely exceeded myexpectations. I started off the afternoon with a shortpresentation, explaining the basic facts and history of marimba, and also the skills developed and benefits of being involved inmarimba. We went on to performed for the parents. Then, itwas the parents’ turn! I taught them a piece that I composed. They were quite nervous, but willing to give it a go. There were alot of laughs, many confused faces, but in the end we got ittogether. Everyone had a lot of fun. We shared afternoon teaafterwards. I hope everyone who attended enjoyed themselves, learnt a lot, and went away with a better understanding ofmarimba.

• Three meals a day, plus morning tea and afternoontea

• A friendly, supportive environment

Hi, my name is James, and I am one of Jindalee’s 10 schoolleaders. Like all the other leaders, I had to do a project, andI decided to do a Games Day for Year 4 and 5 students.Students could bring their own games, and I made certain rulesabout what games to bring, to make sure they could learnsomething. After a lot of organising, my project was on track, and I went around to all the year 4 and 5 classrooms to pitchthe event. On the 4th of December, at second break, as I hadorganised, a few leaders came down to help out. We waitedfor the storm, the queue of people lining up to play games, however only a few made it to the event. Even though only afew children participated, we all still had a great time, and thosestudents enjoyed the games very much. All in all, it was great tosee that my project was positively impacting people’s lives, soall the hard work and organisation was worth it.

Hi, my name is Lily, and I’m one of the Music Captains. Formy project I ran a healthy eating day, named 'Healthy Heroes'.At first break, members of the student leadership team wentaround eating areas from Prep to Grade 2 and checked everystudent's lunchbox. Students who had at least one healthyitem in their lunchboxes received a token. That token was theirticket into the movie "Ratatoullie", at second break that day,as a reward. The amount of students who had healthy food intheir lunchboxes was amazing. The effort put into preparing thisproject was definitely worth it.

My name is Charlie and my student leader project was a BuddySystem, where Year 4-6 students went down to a Prep - Year2 classrooms, to help with the students work such as readingor writing. This has hopefully given the younger studentsconfidence to come and talk the older students. My project

also helped the teachers as they had a helper in the classroomduring their busy day. Thank you to all teachers and studentswho were involved in my project.

As my student leader project, I held a cupcake stall for theGrade 5's and 6's to raise money and awareness for CurrumbinWildlife Hospital Foundation, a local foundation at the GoldCoast, and in desperate need of help. This year, they've hadover 10 000 injured or ill animals. It's been a pleasure to donateto this cause and me able to tell people about the work theydo. The best thing about the day was the number of deliciouscupcakes donated and the money we raised. Every cent of the$347.60 raised will be given to the Currumbin Wildlife HospitalFoundation.

SPORT

Swimming Carnival

Monday 10 December, years 4, 5, 6 andnominated year 3 students participated invarious swimming events. Each student did their very best. Welldone to those who placed.

Cricket

On the last Friday of November our Jindaleesenior teams got the opportunity to go awayto the South East Queensland Finals forCricket. Meant to only be the girl’s team, butdue to a last minute school pulling out, our boys who were nextin line for the Region were entered to the Championships.

In temperatures upwards of 35 degrees both teams playedincredible cricket on the picturesque pitch of Allan Border Oval.At the end of the round robin both teams finished with 2 winsand 1 loss, meaning both progressed to the Grand Final.

The girls played against St Patricks, who was undefeated fromall competitions, defeating teams by 200+ runs at times. Thegirls batted first and set a respectable score, however aftersome big hitting from some of the St Patricks’ girls they chaseddown the Jindalee target. A fantastic effort from 10 girls whohad really never played that much cricket prior to the initial Galaday back a few months ago.

The boys came up against Nudgee, a school renowned for itsRugby and Cricket. With scholarships and academy programsset up year round, with a boys team currently undefeated.Jindalee played with grit, determination and a lot of heart. However, they were unfortunately beaten. A huge effort from ateam that wasn’t even in the competition some 48 hours prior.A very worthy second place in the state championship.

Worthy mentions to girl’s player Neveah Ninyette, who hit twoballs on top off the Matthew Hayden Stand and boy’s player

Lachlan Ferguson for being the only player in the competition totake a hat trick.

Jindalee took home second place in both the boys and girls forSouth East Queensland and became the first public school tofinish that high in both competitions for a number of years. Welldone teams.

On the weekend of the 24 and 25 November the NationalChampionships for Cheerleading and Dance was held downthe Gold Coast. Teams from all around Australia and NewZealand come to compete.
