5 August 2015 5 August 2015 Principal’s News As the staff at Jindalee move ahead with an improvement agenda, it is time I kept you updated with our progress….. While the school has been operating as normal over the first semester staff have been working behind the scenes to update school curriculum documents to ensure Jindalee continues to provide the best education for your children as possible. Beginning with English and Maths, last term the Leadership Team worked with key teachers from each year level to write a new English Scope and Sequence which aligns with the Australian Curriculum. The document, divided into four terms for each year level and aligned to ensure there is no unnecessary overlap from grade to grade, was completed at the very end of Term 2. This Semester we will embark on releasing all teachers for a few days to be involved in writing the Units of work which will contain the Scope and Sequence content, modified for teaching. Our aim is to have all English units of work completed by the end of this year, ready for teaching from the beginning of next year. Teachers have also been provided with a Maths Scope and Sequence and Problem Solving program which will be ready for next year. You may be wondering why we are making these changes and what we are teaching your children at the moment. It is important that we ensure we teach exactly what is required of us by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). This creates the foundation of all work taught in the classroom and beyond. At the moment teachers are teaching units of work which align with the Australian Curriculum, however they did not write the units or assessment pieces. By working through the Australian Curriculum to write a school Scope and Sequence and writing their own units for each year level, teachers not only gain a greater depth of knowledge of the curriculum and why they are teaching the content, but can create units of work which are relative to our students in our school context. Students at Jindalee have the potential to achieve results even greater than what they are achieving now. With positive, supportive parents and generally average to above average level of ability across the school, it is of the utmost importance we do everything to ensure your children work to their potential. Units of work will also be written in a way that students who require support or extension can be catered for. School Fences and Playgrounds We kindly request that parents refrain from using our playgrounds for their own use. Playgrounds are designed for children of specific size/year levels and are not designed for adults. Additionally, please refrain from using the school fences for any type of physical activity and/or encouraging your children to do the same. Thank you to the many parents who ensure only their children use the equipment for the appropriate purpose. ICAS Result Congratulations to Asher M in Year 4 for achieving a Distinction in the ICAS Digital Technology competition. Voices of ANZAC On Monday 27 July, drama, dance and music students from our Combined Centenary State Schools (CLASS) gathered together at City Hall. We were extremely privileged to be a part of this once in a lifetime event and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the Department of Veteran Affairs’ ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program, our Combined Centenary State Schools (CLASS), all three levels of government, our P&C associations, local RSL branch and local community groups such as the Jindalee Lions. With such support transport, catering and provision of a shirt for each student participating in the concert was fully sponsored, with no costs incurred by parents. 114 Burrendah Road Jindalee Qld 4074 Website: Website: http://jindaleess.eq.edu.au Email: Email: [email protected] Phone: Phone: 07 3725 5777 Fax: Fax: 07 3725 5700 Subscribe to Online Newsletter! This was followed byperformances from CSHS drama students, vocal ensemble, ending with a moving performance from our choirs from acrossall 4 schools. Act 2 provided an opportunity for our instrumentalmusic students to shine with our Senior Band and Senior Stringstudents displaying their amazing talents. The evening endedwith all students coming together to sing Amazing Grace andAuld Lang Syne. The upstanding applause from the audiencewas a testament as to how well our students performed onthe evening and the amazing talented musicians we have atJindalee State School and across our CLASS schools. Active School Travel Information

How Well Do You Know Our Local Area?

How easy is it for you to walk, cycle or catch public transportto school? Find out in Jindalee State School’s new active travelmap. Brisbane City Council has produced this map for theschool as part of the Active School Travel program. Our activetravel map is a detailed map of our school’s local areahighlighting public transport routes, walking and cycle pathsand essential public facilities. Every family should have receiveda hard copy of our active travel map over the last week. Sparecopies are available from the office.

You can also measure the distance from your house to schoolusing the measuring scale in the legend. Have a look for thebig pink boundary. We call the area inside this boundary the ‘noexcuses zone’. If you live within that area, you have less than500m to travel to school and that is an easy ten minute walk! Ifyou drive from outside the area, you can still do the ‘Park andStride’. Just leave your car outside the area and walk the restof the way.

You can also use the active travel map this weekend to discovernearby bikeways and walking paths, catch a bus, ferry or train, walk to parks and shops and visit other local attractions.

Christmas in July - Staff function

Jindalee Staff were lucky to celebrate Christmas in July whichwas organised by our fantastic Social Club committee, Kathy,Sandra and Donna. The amount of time and effort that theyhad spent on decoration of the venue had to be seen to bebelieved! A Winter Wonderland greeted the guests. A wonderfulnight was had by all who attended.

Getting to Know … Karen Lehmann,Prep Aide

I grew up in Walkerston. This is a littletown outside of Mackay, Qld. I lived on acattle station until I was five and then wemoved to a cane farm. My dad was themanager of these.

My favourite childhood memory ismaking mud pies under the house. I wasthe middle child of 12 children andalways had someone to play with.

The most exciting thing to happen to me recently is thebirth of my first grandchild. She was born on Boxing Day lastyear. Her name is Ayla and she is beautiful. I am biased ofcourse.

On the weekends I love to spend time with my family andfriends. I am a home body so enjoy being at home with family.I also love gardening.

I am most proud of my husband and three children. Myhusband, Bill, and I have been married for 35 years. He isthe Crossing Supervisor on Curragundi Rd. Our children haveall grown up to be successful, responsible and caring adults.I have tried to teach them to treat others how you want tobe treated yourself. My children are Joshua-32 years old,Ingrid-30 years old and James 28 years old.

If I had a motto it would be “Use the pay it forwardmessage”. Do something for someone and you might notbenefit from it but they might do something for someone elseand so on. Eventually you might get something back but itdoesn’t matter if you don’t because you have already beenpaid by the good feeling of helping someone.

The things that make me laugh are when little childrencome out with priceless comments. That is why I enjoy myjob in Prep.

I would love to be really good at knitting. I am knitting mygranddaughter a cable knit jumper at the moment and it is abit trying.

The hardest thing I have ever done was leave countryMackay when I joined the Air Force at 18. I had never beenanywhere much before that and I had to go to Melbourne todo my rookie training. It was very scary for a country kid.

My friends and family would describe me as a very fairperson. Everyone gets the same amount spent on them forChristmas and Birthdays. Everything is shared evenly. I donot know if this has come from being raised in a big family orif it is what my Mum and Dad instilled in me. This drives myhusband crazy.
