Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, and Students,
For the past number of years we have been concerned with our
school’s accessibility, and the fact that there is only one way into the
school, and one way out of the school grounds. Recent events in
Florida only heighten the necessity to develop a reasonable off-
campus evacuation route for our children. To this end, for the past
several months we have been working with neighborhood
partners to develop such a route. Once completed, this
route will lead from the school to the neighborhood park
located behind the school, where parents would be reunited
with their children. I expect this plan to be completed in a
couple of weeks, and will keep you updated on our progress.
On another issue, I would like to publish a piece I wrote several years ago focusing on school
attendance. “I feel our efforts to resolve the high school dropout problem by focusing on middle
and high school students is a little misguided. A student in high school does not wake up one
morning and suddenly decide to drop out of school. The decision to drop out of school is a long,
on-going process, which begins with poor attendance in elementary school. Also, in reviewing our
data on reading proficiency, we see a strong correlation between poor attendance and poor
academic performance. This is compounded by the fact that our greatest attendance problems are
in kindergarten and first grade. On a side note, the research also indicates that if a student gets
behind in reading in the first grade, it is very difficult for them to catch up. Also, this is not your
grandparent’s kindergarten. Students exiting kindergarten for first grade must know their
numbers, letters, sounds, and basic reading skills. Each day of school they are allowed to miss, you
jeopardize their future educational success. Unless your child is ill, you owe it to them to ensure
they are in school every day.”
Aloha,
J. Denight

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers that made our PE Departments Color Run a fun and successful event. Thank you to all who participated. The proceeds will help the school’s PE Department with their equipment and program needs. Muffins for Moms and Donuts for Dads had a GREAT turnout. Thank you “parental units” for all you do for your kids! Again, want to thank STARBUCKS for always helping out with the coffee! Even the weather was not cooperating we had a great Literacy/Movie Night! Linda Nagai had some very clever activities, snacks and crafts for the kids and parents.
