 Denotes Their Alpine Highnesses Presence

Greetings unto the Populace of the Summits, We have just returned from visiting the Kingdom of Atenvelt, where We attended Estrella War. While We wish more of Our populace could have attended, We would like to thank Countess Berangaria, Master Finngall, and Marius de Parthia for their assistance. We would also like to thank Sir William the Battered Helm's squire from Tir Righ for going above and beyond to assist Us. Our few Summits troops performed admirably in helping our allies on the war field, and former Summits resident Don Simone Nichols winning both the rapier and cut and thrust tournament. We wish to remind everyone that letters of intent for Coronet tournament are due to Us by 10:30 AM, on Saturday, March 16th. We will make sure there is a window between meetings for you to get your letters of intent to Us. You will also be able to get your letters of intent to Us at our hotel room. We will post the hotel and a window of time on the list when we know it. We are hoping to see many of you out at Coronet fighting to be Our Heirs. We would like to see some great fighting. We would like to remind you that chivalry goes beyond the fighting field, and we will be looking to how you treat the lists ministers, water bearers, heralds and other people around the field as well as your comportment on the field. After Coronet, please join Us for Hastilude in Tymberhaven, All Fool's in Corvaria, and St Eggbert's Feast in Myrtleholt. Luciano and Elizabeth Doge and Dogaressa

March Coronet List Information

Example Letter of Intent

Your letter of intent should reflect both who you are and what you hope to bring to the Principality, at a general and basic level. They should be persona-appropriate – be that on parchment, stone or bark.

A good place to find examples of illuminated manuscripts is here: http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/illuminatedmanuscripts/searchsimple.asp.

If your persona would do a runestone: http://www.mpm.edu/collections/artifacts/anthropology/scandinavian/rune-stones/

Birch-bark letters: http://languagesoftheworld.info/historical-linguistics/birch-bark-letters-part-1.html

Here is a picture of the letter of intent that I did for His Highness when we presented to Aaron and Telisia at

September Coronet:

The inspiration came from the manuscript here: http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/illuminatedmanuscripts/ILLUMIN.ASP?Size=mid&IllID=8871

You’ll see that it’s basically just the shape of the center cartouche from the original that I’ve used. The black and silver image at the top is a pomegranate from a portrait of a woman’s dress.

The Latin text reads:

Principes potentissimi, Lucianus Foscarius et Elizabetha Turner de Karliolis sumus. Vobis volentibus, pro honore Vestros Heredes nominandi pugnare expetimus. Si vincamus, sustentare leges traditionesque Summitorum voveamus. Idonei omnibus quae leges Principalitatis necesse regnare volentibus habent sumus. Praeterea peritissimi in tribus pilis Societatis sumus. Ambo in comitatu regali servivimus et ergo quae regnum prosperum requiret comprehendemus. Nos Principalitati in servitio praebimus Vobis volentibus.

The English translation is:

Most powerful princes, we are Luciano Foscari and Elizabeth Turner de Carlisle. With Your approval, we desire to fight for the honor of being named Your Heirs. Should we be victorious, we vow to uphold the laws and traditions of the Summits. We are fit for all those things, which the laws of the Principality deem necessary for those who wish to rule. In addition, we are most experienced in all three pillars of the Society. We have both served in the royal retinue and understand what a successful reign demands. We offer ourselves in service to the Principality, as You will.

I chose to do it this way because most of the official documents I could find from our time period in Venice were in Latin. The translation was done by a herald in Atlantia that I know through commenting at the Society level, Mistress Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane.

Making a Shield Board Shield boards are usually made of a thin sheet of plywood, with a hole on each side so that they can be hung on the list board. On the front side of the shield should be your arms. They don’t have to be registered, but we would encourage everyone to work on registering suitable arms. On the back should be your name. These shields will be paired together on the shield board, showing the populace who will be fighting each bout. Once a fighter has lost a bout, their shield is placed upside down on the list board to indicate that.

Shield board should be 3” x 4.25”

Words From the Summits Seneschal

Greetings unto the populace of The Summits, The joys of Tourney Season are finally here! The Lands of The Summits gently shake-off the final dustings of snow and awake to the rebirth of the earth. We enjoy flowers in bloom and robin egg blue skies. March Coronet fast approaches with anticipation of the Heirs of the Coronet. Entrants and consorts, “May the sun shine its face favorably upon you.” Let each of us remember the most important aspect of the day is to preserve honour and chivalry; both on and off the field-of-combat. The first and foremost goal of each participant should be that of conduct most becoming in thought, word and deed; to rise to the challenge and achieve the most coveted acknowledgement of all, to be singled-out to be the bearer of the Shield of Chivalry. Take a moment to reflect upon your SCA path. Recollect all those things, which are good and wonderful in our Society and share them with others. Welcome newcomers and invite them to return and encourage those who are returning and seeking camaraderie. Celebrate all that is true, good and orderly. Serve to the best of your ability and have joy in all that you do! Norous, HL VASA d'Este, Seneschal, Principality of The Summits

Saint Eggbert’s Feast April 13, 2013 Shire of Myrtleholt (Grant Pass, Or.) Event Steward Anwn Grayingham Hamilton

Come help us to honor Myrtleholt's patron saint, St. Eggbert.

The Story of St. Eggbert of the chickens:

Eggbert was born, the third son of a fowler at Hennford, England in the year 402 AD. The local priest taught him letters when he was seven. He bacame a wandering monk preaching to any listener. He used a hens egg to explain the Trinity and while happily dining on roasted fowl said: "if thy right wing offend thee then then pluck it off." Eggburt was a pious but odd man often sleeping in hen houses. One night, fierce vikings raided the small hold. Eggbert, half asleep in the coop was beaten to death by a huge Dane wielding a pair of pilfered cocks.

The Shire of Myrtleholt celebrates St. Eggbert's Feast is because many years ago the Shire was given a mystical sign. There had been a feast wherein all meats were poultry. After this feast shire members exhibited red itchy rashes, fevers and swelling of the bodies - all indicative of the Pox of Henne. Superstitious mutterings causes one Lady to even change her name from "de Poullet" to "de Faucon". The plague caused people to look to heaven for help. A story was circulated about the man called Eggbert who seemed a Saint. A large statue of a rooster was located in a nearby village. Plague victims and survivors made pilgrimage there to beseech Eggbert to end the plague. They honored him with a feast in the fall. The Plague of Henne was gone.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED:

It is in this vein that we continue to bring to your enjoyment a variety of activities both serious and silly... This year, as we've been forbidden by the involved fighters from from ever again performing the "white alligator and chicken" form of the Gatekeeper Tourney, we are substituting the following activities (yes, the Gatekeeper Tourney will eventually be resurrected... but for now, hold the faith):

• Myrtleholt's 2nd annual A&S Championship Our current Champion will be releasing the requirements for entry. Please check back here after February 5th, as this site should be updated by that time with all the details.

• Return of the Gatekeeper Tournament (Heavy Fighters) Details of this competition are forthcoming. Please check back here after February 10th for further information.

• Trading Blanket: We've been having much fun with getting people together to bring things that they may no longer need or have a use for, and getting them together to bid and trade for other items that others have. Sometimes the bids can be quite spectacular when the bidding gets stiff!!! So bring anything that you might like to trade... maybe you don't need it any more, it might be just what somebody else needs... for their costume, their encampment, their feast-ware, or to be creatively reused for some other purpose...

• Classes: o Butter making - (adults and smalls)

Each student will be given the materials and taught how to "churn" their own butter, which can then be used to supplement your sumptuous goodies at the Feast. Best butter may be awarded an honor!!! Cost: Free

o MORE TO BE ANNOUNCED... • The Game of Goose competition

As has become traditional gaming for our St. Eggbert's, this year we will once again be bringing out the Gooseboards and getting those ardent boardgame players to the table for some serious competition. If enough people are involved, we may even have a tournament... maybe even a prize will be offered...

• The Feast: We will be starting the feast approximately at 5:30 bearing in mind that there are no changes to our agenda.

TENTATIVE FEAST MENU (Subject to change):

1st Remove: Fowl w/ Orange & Ginger Glaze Herbed Rice Crudites w/ hummus & a yogurt/strawberry dip

2nd Remove: Lemon & herb stuffed Salmon Balsamic Brussel Sprouts Lozenge Custard pie (strawberry)

3rd Remove: Salad w/ Raspberry Vinagrette dressing Roasted Venision & Vegi
