School HistoryLocated on the corner of Goldmine Road and Minka Lane, stage one of Ormeau Woods State High opened in January 2009 with 230 students in Years 8 and 9. In 2011 our stage two senior school facilities were opened to accommodate the 670 students in Years 8 to 11. In 2012 we proudly saw our first cohort of Year 12 students graduate to coincide with the construction of stage three facilities.

The school now accommodates students in Years 7 to 12. Our ambition is to be a leading Queensland school where students can excel in: academic studies, cultural and creative fields, sporting pursuits and community service. These are referred to in the school as our ‘Four Pillars’. Students who are out of catchment are able to apply for bursaries within each pillar.

The school is a state of the art facility and technology rich environment that is conscientiously progressing towards a paperless learning environment. Ormeau Woods State High School is developing new and innovative approaches to education. Our students are part of a unique ‘new school’ experience which provides them with personal challenges and rewards in shaping our history.

Our NameOrmeau is a french name meaning ‘Young Elm’. It came from Ormeau House, the estate of Major A.J. Boyd, a sugar planter of the 1860s. Major Boyd took the name from the birthplace of his wife, Isabella Dawson. She was born in ‘Ormeau Road’ a district on the outskirts of Belfast, Ireland.

The name ‘Woods’ was chosen for three reasons:

- It is the collective noun for a group of trees (Young Elms – a reference to our students). - The name is a link to the past. Local Elders refer to ‘wallul jalia’ meaning ‘many trees’. - The name also reflects our commitment to the environment, one of the most significant issues of the 21st Century.

Our Motto‘Linking Learning with Life’

Our motto reflects our commitment to a curriculum and learning environment that includes experiences outside the classroom where there is a strong connection between the school, families and the community. The motto also conveys that learning is a lively activity which engages students and teachers.

Our LogoThe stylised logo is a deliberate departure from traditional school logos and reflects the concept of a ‘new school – new thinking’. The eagle comes from the indigenous word ‘Mibbun’ meaning ‘Wedge Tailed Eagle’.

The logo has the following attributes:• The gold wing ‘O’ and tail ‘W’ are stylized representations of our name Ormeau Woods. The blue wing ‘C’ represents the closeness of the Ormeau community.• Gold represents Goldmine Road and the area’s history of gold mining.• The eagle is flying upwards to signify our students’ lofty ambitions.

Our MissionOur mission is to provide the highest quality teaching and learning experiences to enable all students to fulfill their aspirations!

In achieving our mission we emphasise that:• Learning is natural; a love of learning is normal and real learning is passionate learning. • An engaging curriculum is one which is personalised, values creativity and encourages excellence • Teaching is about getting to know each child as an individual not just as a class member.

Our Guiding PrinciplesRespect for Teaching and Learning, Respect for Self and Others, Respect for Property

AODIAcademy of Dance Industries

If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand - we believe in developing the mind of a whole person - inspiring our students to be prosperous as an individual, and hungry to learn. AODI dancers speak the language of movement fluently, are grounded in classical ballet and modern techniques, and have structure and discipline in their bodies. They are also creative thought leaders who can de-construct those techniques and develop their own original artistic voices to answer challenging questions through music and movement exploration. Through its classes, performances, and compositional opportunities, AODI fosters and empowers the next generation of exceptional artists and creative voices in the dance world.

Year 7-9: Studio of Dance Excellence (SoDE)The Studio of Dance Excellence (SoDE) offered within the Academy of Dance Industries aims to develop versatile dancers who are high skilled, socially responsible and ready for entry into Year 10, where students complete their Certificate IV in Dance among other accredited qualifications.

Year 10-12: Vocational Dance Academy (VDA)The three-year program originated to give students the advanced skills and understanding within the dance industries, as well as the associated skills and knowledge essential to adult life. Students complete their dance studies within a real high school education, ensuring the development of a whole person. This educational structure allows the aspiring dancer to choose whether they would like to devote their studies to solely dance, the arts, or something completely different without pathway and financial restriction.
