Principal’s Message

Friday, December 5 is PA Day. Yorkview will be closed

to students on this day.

Tonight is a very special night at Yorkview! We are

hosting two special events organized by our most

incredible School Council. The first is a workshop for

parents titled “Homework Strategies to Help Students

Focus” and second is the movie “Despicable Me 2” for the

children. Please see Pages 4 and 5 of this newsletter for

more information.

Friday is Pyjama Day! Staff and students are welcome to

enjoy Pizza Day while in their favourite pyjamas. If

possible, we ask everyone to donate a dollar on this day to

support “Autism Speaks”.

We are excited to share that Candy Grams will be sold

between December 15 – 17. The theme is “Treat an old

friend, make a new friend”. Please see page 7 of the

newsletter for more information.

Yorkview is teaming up with “Loveable Lables” to

personalize school belongings. Please feel free to visit the

website www.YorkviewPS.lovablelabels.ca for ideas. 20%

of purchase orders will go towards our new playground.

We were expecting on Monday December 1, to start sending an automated message to

parents/guardians after 9:30 a.m. and after 1:30 p.m. for students that are marked absent on

the attendance. When this happens, and we expect to start January 8, 2015, please note the

prompts on the message and follow them carefully. We still encourage everyone to call the

Safe Arrival Line at 416-395-4329 “Option 1” for known absences and lates. This line is

available 24 hours.

Eco News at Yorkview

With the successful installation of our first outdoor classroom, Yorkview is going green once

again! This time we are planning an outdoor kindergarten classroom that is based on the

inquiry/play based learning model and we are asking for your help. We are looking for some

items to be donated to our new classroom. Items include: a plastic outdoor playhouse, pots

and pans, and pieces of wood of various shape/size and that are sliver-free (edges are sanded).

We are also looking for what are known as “tree cookies” (i.e., an old tree/log that has been

cut into silver dollar shapes). This requires that you are able to use the appropriate tools.

There are two types:

Fixed tree cookies generally have a larger diameter and can afford sitting, jumping, and

balancing. Tree cookies that are fixed in the ground linearly create a path. The tree cookies

should be a minimum of 4 inches thick. Any rough edges on the top side of the tree cookies

should be sanded.

Loose tree cookies have a variety of potential affordances, including dramatic play, stacking,

sorting and hauling. Loose tree cookies can be 1" - 6" thick and have a diameter of 3" - 12".

A radial arm saw or band saw can be used to cut smaller diameter tree cookies. Both cut sides

of loose tree cookies should be sanded smooth.

We are also looking for logs as seen below to enhance the sitting area. See pictures below:

If anyone has an old tree that is designated for pruning/replacing, this would make for an

ideal tree to be cut into “cookies” or used as a log bench.

We are excited to begin this project in the spring. If you have any of the above materials to

donate, please contact David Feldman at [email protected]

Thank you for your continued support in all of our Eco related projects!
