FINAL MEETING OF THE 2017 SCHOOL

    COUNCIL: 22ND FEBRUARY 6.00-7.30PM

The final meeting of the 2017 School Council will be on Thursday 22nd February at 6.00pm, convened by School Council President, Sandra Griffin. Grade Six Junior School Councillors are asked to attend the meeting as representatives of the student body. SCHOOL COUNCIL 2018 ELECTIONS

School Council elections begin today with the calling of nominations for the four retiring vacancies. Our four retiring councillors are Shane Saunderson, Sandra Griffin, Angela Gaynor & Caroline Grylls. Retiring Councillors are welcome to re-nominate for a further term on school council. Nominations forms are available from the office and nominations will close on Wednesday 21st February at 4:00pm. You can self-nominate or nominate someone else. If there is a need to have an election this will happen from Wednesday 28th February until 4:00 Wednesday 14th March. Our first meeting of the new school council will be Wednesday 21st March. What is the role of the School Council? The Lockwood Primary School Council is the governing body of the school. All schools are required to strive for continuous improvement, using a four year School Strategic Plan (SSP) and an accompanying Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). School Council is responsible for approving these plans and ensuring that they set a direction for the future that is aligned with our shared vision for Lockwood Primary School. We are a policy-driven organisation and operate around a set of policies that are regularly reviewed by School Council. Policy review is the main work of the council and takes up most of our monthly meeting time. Council is also responsible for approving camps, excursions and pupil-free days. MEET & GREET— TUESDAY 20TH FEBRUARY

I’m looking forward to joining with staff to welcome our 2018 families next Tuesday evening. This is an informal event and we hope that everyone will be able to attend. See “Volunteers” notices below for more information. “APOLOGY” ASSEMBLY

Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of Kevin Rudd’s historical speech in Parliament—the apology to Indigenous Australians, particularly the Stolen Generations. JSC did a wonderful job of reciting an excerpt from the speech. Our Koorie Education Support Officers, Stephen Korps and Simon Penrose also attended the assembly along with several parents. SUSTAINABILITY INCURSION—9TH MARCH

Regional Arts Victoria will be presenting a performance about sustainability and what we can do to protect the environment. We have received a susbstantial subsidy that enables the show to tour to Bendigo at an affordable price. The incursion costs $4.60 per students and notices will be sent home next week. “IS AUSTRALIA THE LUCKY COUNTRY?”

This is the question that students in Gr.4-6 are investigating in Term One. They have been studying the impact on indigenous Australians, of the First Fleet landing. Students wrote narrative pieces using dialogue (conversation) to express factual information about some of the early encounters between Aboriginals and Europeans. Bella Parkes and Rio Justin-Syah’s writing is featured in the newsletter. Well done! DENTAL HEALTH SCREENINGS

The dental checks have now been completed for all students who returned permission forms. Parents can expect to receive a report and recommendations.

    HEADLICE

We have received several reports of head lice in the past week. We’ve managed to really get on top of this problem in the last few years and we’re keen to keep head lice out of the school. Head lice checks will be conducted by a qualified nurse next Wednesday morning. STUDENT SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS

Parents of students who are on an Individual Learning Plan including students requiring support or extension, received a letter this week. Please log into Sentral to book a Student Support Group (SSG) meeting for next week. Various times are available. SSG meetings run for 25 minutes. SHOWGROUNDS CLEAN-UP 4/3

Clean-ups are a terrific fundraiser for our school. We’ve been asked to clean up the showgrounds on Sunday 4/3, following the Rodeo Event on Saturday 3/3. If you can help out, please sign up on the sheet on my office window. Please bring gloves and tongs and lots of helpers to the showgrounds at 8.00am on Sunday 4th

    DIALOGUE WRITING:

    FIRST FLEET/ABORIGINAL ENCOUNTERS

PAYBACK RITUAL by Bella P “Bennelong!” shouted Arthur Phillip. “Bennelong! Oh dear Bennelong! Ha ha ha ha ha!” the women shouted along the river. “Stop laughing, ladies. He is my friend!” Phillip ordered harshly. “Yeh, right,” said one of the women. Phillip gave her a serious look and she went quiet. After a while, they arrived at a little beach where they found the tribe of aboriginals, including Bennelong. They got out of the boat and went over to them. All the aborigines backed off. “Look, I am sorry if I upset you in any way. Now may we be friends?” asked Phillip. He slowly walked towards Bennelong, with his arms wide open. Bennelong backed off. Someone behind him aimed and threw his spear in Phillip’s shoulder. “RUN!” shouted Phillip’s mates. “Well, I guess I deserved that,” sighed Phillip as his mates carried him away.

TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS by Rio J “Hey Bennelong, that man dressed up fancy in the blue jacket, tell him to take off his pants.” “Why?” “Because I want to know if he’s a man or woman.” “Okay. Hey, human, pull down your pants!” “What?” “Pull down your pants!” “No that is immature and extremely , absolutely rude.” “I just asked are you a man or a lady?” “I will only tell you if you don’t say ‘take off your pants’.” “Okay, what gender are you then?” “I am a male.” “Oh, okay.”
