Principal’s ReportLast week Mount Annan High School held its’ annual Year 6into 7 Parent Information Night and, as it was my first at theschool I was really interested to see the event first hand. I haveto say it was an absolute pleasure to meet and talk to so manylovely parents and their Year 6 students and the feedback Ireceived from the evening was overwhelmingly positive aboutthe school, its’ staff and the type of education that MountAnnan could offer. Well over 200 people attended the schooltours and faculty expo and information session, with about 15different schools represented. We look forward to seeing alarge number of the students who attended the night joining usin Year 7 during 2017.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate EmilyBackhouse of Year 11 who is the recipient of a state NangaMai Award in the category of Student Leadership. The NangaMai Awards celebrate Aboriginal educational excellence in NSWPublic Schools and Emily is indeed a worthy recipient. Emily isan extremely hard-working, kind and caring student who takesit upon herself to mentor and guide those around her. She isthe president of our Mount Annan Community of Schools AECG(Aboriginal Education Consultative Group) and a member ofthe Polly Farmer Program at Western Sydney University. Sherepresents all that is good about the students at our schooland I am extremely proud of her. She will receive her award atthe National Maritime Museum on 22nd March, accompaniedby myself, Ms Eagles and her family. Special thanks go to MsEagles for nominating Emily and for her hard work with all of ourIndigenous students.
The start of next term will see a couple of importantimprovements to our school which will aid student learningand communication with our school community. Two of ourcomputer labs, G6 and B4 will be upgraded so that ourstudents can better access the Information and CommunicationTechnology in greater comfort and our electronic school signwill be installed at the front of the school on Welling Drive. Thesign will provide important updates about important events andthe achievements of our students, so keep an eye out for it inthe next few months.

Deputy Principal ReportWe have had some great things happening over the last fewweeks.
Year 7 have settled in nicely to high school and attached isa small piece of what high school has been like for 3 of ourYear 7 students. We asked a student from each of our 3 feederprimary schools to write something about their first few days athigh school that they could share with their primary schools. Wereally enjoyed reading their stories and we hope that you enjoythem too.
Year 9 have settled into their electives and are now in theirsettled study pattern for the year. Mr Bates’ elective classBuilding and Construction have been busy erecting a shed forthe PDHPE department to use at the back of the gym. I havebeen down to watch some very serious building and somegreat cooperation occurring. It is a great example of puttingclasswork into action.
I had the pleasure of attending the PARTY program with 30Year 11 students at Liverpool Hospital. This program which isrun by the hospital emphasises that ‘You Only Live Once soThink Twice’. Students heard from the Trauma team – Nursesand Doctors, our School Liaison Police and Paramedic beforetouring ICU, the Trauma ward and the Emergency Dept.Students were spoken to by a parent whose child had beenin a car accident, participated in simulations and were ableto ask many questions during the tour. In the afternoon thestudents participated in workshops run by physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists and alsoheard from a victim of a one punch head trauma and a caraccident victim who was now a paraplegic. It was an eyeopening and informative day which I wish had the capacity forus to take all our students. It is a program we are hoping tocontinue to be a part of with year groups once they reach Year
11. A couple of our Year 11 students have written an article todescribe their day doing the program.
Kristie HarrisDeputy Principal
P.A.R.T.Y ProgramOn Thursday the 18th of February, 30 of our fellow year 11students were privileged enough to visit Liverpool Hospital andtake part in the P.A.R.T.Y (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-RelatedTrauma in Youth) Program. Nurses, surgeons and paramedics, parents and victims of drug and driving related incidents tookpart in advising us on the dangers of taking risks and thedevastating consequences which can happen. Whist theinformation and statistics on young people involved in drugand driving related incidents was alarming to hear, it was theparents and victims themselves sharing their traumatic storiesand experiences which touched a nerve in each of us.
During our time at the hospital we were given a tour throughthe Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit and TraumaUnit. We even had the opportunity to participate in some of theday to day life events that patients experience, such as physicalrehabilitation, speech pathology and occupational therapy. Thehardest part of the day was speaking with a mother whose17 year old son was in a car accident involving a driver whohad taken drugs. The driver collided head on with another carwhich resulted in everyone being hospitalised. Her son had theworst damage and has now been in intensive care for twomonths. During this time he has experienced a multitude ofoperations and blood transfusions. He still cannot walk, eat orperform normal day to day functions without assistance. Shesadly told us of the emotional and physical hardships in dealingwith her son’s accident, such as travelling 3 hours every dayand the impact on the rest of the family as she could not carefor them during this period of time. It really reinforced the overallmessage of the day - “Live once, think twice”.
This excursion was extremely rewarding in showing us theharsh reality of dangerous risk taking behaviour and the impactnot only on ourselves but our family and friends. We walkedaway from this experience changed … for the better. It madeus realise we are not invincible.
