Mr Gilks and Mrs Rayner had a great day on Wednesday at the OzTag Gala day for Stage 3. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams played and came away with fantastic results, The girls were defeated in the quarter finals, 3-1 to St John the Baptist School and the boys were undefeated coming away with a grand final win against Terrigal Star of the Sea 3-1. Congratulations to all of the players and a big thank you to Mr Gilks for all his coaching and Mrs Rayner for supporting the teams on the day! Our Athletics Carnival was held today and, from all reports, the day ran smoothly. Thank you to Mr Brown for organising this event, to all the teachers helping out on the day and the P&C for providing a great lunch for so many! We will have an update and results in next week’s newsletter. Our next P&C meeting will be on Monday August 19. We will be commencing this meeting at 7pm (earlier than usual) and everyone is welcome. PBL Update – Art Show

What an amazing week!

We hosted our first ever Art

Show and I would like to

congratulate the wonderful

behaviour that was demonstrated

by all our visitors. The

enthusiasm and pride was so

obvious as people entered the

hall, and many people were

amazed at the incredible talent

that we have here at KPS.

Thank you to everyone who

visited and for giving such

positive feedback.

VISITING CHILDREN’S AUTHOR

In Week 5 we have invited a local author, Judy Townsend to show

her six book titles, and talk to the children about the value of

reading, the editing and publication process and the important

role of picture books in the development of reading. Judy is our

recently retired children’s librarian who is passionate about sharing

her love of children’s literature. She brings her original manuscripts and illustration proofs.

Judy will bring along proof copies of her books to show the many editing changes. Early

illustration sketches that are transformed into final images are enjoyed by the students.

Judy also shows the students illustrations that are rejected and not included in the final

published books.

Cost is a gold coin on the day and all the money raised goes to buying books for the

library. The author will also be selling her books at cost price - $10. Because it is close to

Father’s Day the “Grandson” and “Granddaughter” will be $5 to make the perfect

present on Grandad/Pop’s special day. Please send in your money with the title of the

book, child’s name & class on the front of the envelope. Judy personally signs the books

for your child.

Parents are very welcome to join their children and enjoy listening to this great author.

Your child will learn how a picture book goes from the planning stages to the final

published copy. The children, teachers and parents enjoy seeing all the mistakes that are

made along the way, making the children realise how valuable it is to edit their work. Q&A

sessions are enjoyed at the end of the hour presentation.

WHAT BOOK IS SUITABLE FOR MY CHILD?

Off to bed, Sleepyhead! Is a fun rhyming book perfect for 4-6 year olds.

Perfect book for growing a young vocabulary.

Evidently That’s Not Normal! Funny hardback book that tells of a

household run by animals - best for ages 5-7. Sorry this book has sold

out!

Chalk and Cheese is a popular hardback book with a twist at the end

and has been used by many schools to teach gender stereotyping.

Best for grade 2-5.

How Do I Know? Hardback for the older reader as it shows a different

viewpoint on disability.

Because You’re My Grandson was written after the birth of Judy’s first

grandchild and tells of the love a grandparent feels for their grandson.

It won an Australian award in 2014.

Because You’re My Granddaughter is the perfect gift to give any new

grandparent. Many children buy these books to share with their

grandparents.

Peer Support- Week 3 During Peer Support this week, the children looked at qualities their friends may have and the concept that we choose friends based on the qualities we admire in them. They also explored the skills of friendship, specifically those of cooperating and listening. Encourage your child to show they are interested in the person they are talking to by being an active listener. Great job this week Kariong!

Our Week with Lori – Class KH

Lori was so lucky to spend this week with us,

as he joined in with all our fun

activities during Open Day.

He went to the Book Fair…….

and hung out in our classroom with our

families………

Best of all, he loved looking around the

Art Show with us and thought our class

canvas was amazing.

Stage 3 OzTag Gala Day On Wednesday 7 August our Stage 3 Boys and Girls OzTag teams competed at the Central Coast OzTag Gala Day at The Central Coast Regional Sporting Complex. Both teams displayed skill, determination and teamwork throughout all games. Out of their 4 pool games, the girls won their first 3 games convincingly and drew their last match. As a result, the girls made the quarter finals, but were unfortunately knocked out after that game. Great effort girls! After a slow start in the first game, the boys clicked into gear and won all of their games in their pool convincingly as well. The boys’ team worked well together in all games. They had a tough semi-final but were too strong in the grand final, 7-2 winners against Star of the Sea Terrigal. Zane C was awarded a trophy for being the best player in the grand final. Congratulations again to both teams. Good luck to our Stage 2 teams who will be competing next Tuesday at their Gala Day. Mr Gilks and Mrs Rayner
