MATHEMATICS COMPETITION RESULTS

Students from Henley High School recently participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Mathematics Competition. Both competitions are highly challenging in nature and provide the ideal opportunity for students to test their mathematical prowess, whilst honing their examination skills, providing the ideal preparation for Year 12 examinations.

The AMC was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students. It has become the largest single event on the Australian education calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in over 30 countries around the globe. This year, we had 13 students participate in the competition, who collectively achieved 2 High Distinctions, 5 Distinctions, 4 Credits, 1 Proficiency and 1 Participation award. Of special mention are Rafael Chowindra (Year 9) and Zihong (Annie) Qu (Year 11) who each received a High Distinction, meaning they were in the top 3% and 5% of participants, respectively.

The ICAS Mathematics Competition, whilst introduced more recently, attracts many students from over 20 countries worldwide. This year in the ICAS Mathematics Competition, 21 Henley High students participated, collectively earning 3 Distinctions, 2 Credits, 2 Merits and 14 Participation Certificates.

We congratulate our students for their success in the 2016 mathematics competitions.

PERFORMING ARTS TOUR TO THE USA

At the end of term three, a group of 18 Henley High School students and teachers, Ms Madigan and Mr Pascoe, travelled to America to learn more about the Performing Arts in a global context.

Our first stop was New York, the city that doesn’t sleep. On our first day in New York we got to experience lots of amazing things from the beautiful Grand Central station, the High Line, the Chelsea markets, a rainy Brooklyn to get a view of the Manhattan skyline and Fifth Avenue. The following days involved cultural excursions to the American Museum of Natural History, the September 11 Memorial and museum, Time square, Central Park, and Liberty Island to get close to the statue of Liberty. These excursions gave us an idea of what it’s like to live in New York and also how significant events have shaped this city, its people and the rest of the world.

We also experienced some fantastic Performing Arts activities including two Broadway shows (Aladdin and Wicked); workshops in stage combat and learning the choreography and vocal to Arabian Nights, a song from Aladdin and Q&A’s with working performers and technicians. Talking to people working in the Arts industry in New York was an amazing way to get to understand the multitude of career pathways that are available in the Performing Arts.

After all this we left New York having formed lots of amazing memories, we then got on another plane to Los Angeles. In LA we didn’t have as much time but we certainly had a lot fun. On the first day we had a tour of Hollywood Boulevard then got to make our own movie. We had received the script to a zombie movie before the trip and on our first day in LA we got to make the movie; working with a professional director, cameramen, makeup artists and sound and lighting technicians. Many of us were made up as zombies with professional makeup and lots of fake blood. Our drama students and digital film makers learnt an enormous amount of what it takes to create a short film.

The next day we spent at Universal Studios going on rides and exploring the worlds from some of our favourite movies, and that night we got to see the lights of LA from the Griffith Observatory. We then travelled to Anaheim, spending two days exploring Disneyland and California Adventure Park. We all went on rides, met characters and participated in a workshop where we got a unique insight into the backstage workings of the current Disneyland show.

Overall the trip was an amazing and unforgettable experience, and we would all highly recommend this tour to any students that gets the opportunity to go in the future.

EVENING OF DANCE PERFORMANCE 2016In week 10 of term 3 all Dance and SSP Dance students performed to friends and family at the Odeon Theatre in Norwood for our Evening of Dance performance. All term our students have been learning and rehearsing dance pieces in a variety of styles, and their hard work and dedication made the night a success. We would like to especially acknowledge and congratulate the Stage 2 Dance students as this performance was their external examination and their last performance as Henley High School students.

It was a privilege to be able to perform in a professional theatre, and our students treated the space respectfully and behaved with maturity. We were also lucky enough to have Mr Cox’s Cert 3 Technical Production students working with us, confidently handling the lighting, sound and projection to make the show run smoothly. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the audience members who braved the wild weather Adelaide was experiencing to come and support the show.

9-A-SIDE FOOTBALL CARNIVAL FOR PARA-ATHLETES – SUCCESS FOR ALL PROGRAMHenley High School had the pleasure of hosting the Para-athletes football carnival once again this year and it was a huge success. Para-athletes from Golden Grove High disability Unit, Adelaide East Education Centre, Hamilton Secondary College, Salisbury High School, Modbury High School and Henley High School Supported Learning Centre, all participated in the 9-a-side football carnival. The objective of the carnival was to maximise the participation and sense of enjoyment for each athlete. I believe this was achieved through the help of the following;

• David Phillips (School Sports Officer) for promoting and helping organise the carnival

• Year 9 AFL SSP students for umpiring the games

• Year 11 AFL SSP students for coaching the teams

• School coordinators for their organisation and nominations

• All SSO’s and teachers who made the trip to Henley High and helped their respective teams

• Mr Venning for organising training/coaching sessions for the year 11 AFL SSP students and Henley para-athletes

• Andrew Anger and Nathan Pepper for promoting football to students with disabilities and providing further opportunities for our para-athletes to be involved in football

Finally, a huge thank you to the para-athletes for bringing lots of enthusiasm, energy, excitement and healthy competitiveness.

Partnering students with and without disabilities helps to facilitate cooperative relationships among these students. To provide this opportunity and encouragement, Henley High School has implemented an effective strategy called the Success for All Program. Through sport, a peer coaching and mentoring program was designed to promote respect for differences and interaction among our students from the Supported Learning Centre (SLC) and the Specialist Sport Program, and Sport and Recreation students from mainstream.

Please read the following comments and hear what our students from the SLC had to say about their mentors at the 9-A-Side Football carnival.

“I had fun! We played like a team and I kicked eleven goals.” – Wil

“My mentor is Jack. Jack helped me to kick the football.” – Bethany

“I enjoyed playing 9-a-side football with my friends.” – Anthony

“My mentor, Toby said I was good at playing 9-a-side football.” – Aline

We are pleased to say that the Success for All Program has created a positive school experience that enables students to interact cooperatively with each other and benefit from gaining an appreciation for diversity in general.

Thank you to all involved and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
