2013-2014

The academic work of odd semester of Scott Christian College (Autonomous) for

the year 2013-2014 began with the reopening of II and III year Undergraduate and II year

Postgraduate classes on 20.06.2013. The first year Undergraduate classes commenced on

21.06.2013. The fresh batch of first year Postgraduate classes were started on

25.07.2013. The current pre-doctoral candidates started their academic course on

29.07.2013.

IV. Our Infrastructure :

1. Library and Laboratories

1. 228 Hindi books have been allotted from the Central Government for promoting

the learning of Hindi.

2. 218 Books were added to the James Duthie Central Library during the year.

3. Internet connectivity has been strengthened and all the departments have

additional updated computers.

2. Indoor Stadium

The foundation phase of the construction is over and the college has already

applied for the II Phase. The University Commission has visited the site for Physical

Verification and had forwarded the utilization certificate to the UGC. This Indoor

Stadium will be available for use for the students of Christian College of Physical

Education, sister institutions of the Kanyakumari Diocese and also neighbouring schools.

The work will start as soon as we receive the next phase of funds.

3. Building Assistance

A new shed has been constructed to house the generator, few washrooms and an

electrical utility room.

The unused building behind the Alumni Hall has been renovated to house the

offices of seven NSS units and attached toilets. These rooms will function as NSS offices

for units 91, 92, 93, 94, 123, 124 and 127.

The building which earlier housed the Indian Overseas Bank Extention Counter

has now been reoriented and renovated to house the NCC (Navy) Unit, giving a facelift to

the unit.

It is proposed to convent the building under construction to the left of the Chapel

into Controller of Examinations office complex. It will house the offices of the

Controller of Examinations, seats of Assistant Controllers, store room and a special Hall

for invigilatons.

4. DST-FIST Lab

A ‘Fund for Improvement of Science & Technology’ (FIST) Grant of Rs. 45.52

lakhs has been sanctioned for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology

departments in the College. Latest and hi-tech equipments have been added. This special

facility will be accessed by all the five departments. This new facility was inaugurated on

August 2013.

V. Co-curricular Activities :

Workshop on Effective Leadership:

A ‘Workshop on Effective Leadership’ was conducted by the Department of

Youth Welfare of Scott Christian College (Autonomous) at Kanyakumari on February 23,

2013. A unique programme which consisted various innovative and creative session

which tingled the hidden talents of the budding leaders. Hundred students participated in

this workshop which also included the enthusiastic teaching staff of the college.

Talent Show 2013:

The Talent Show is an annual event of Scott Christian College (Autonomous) in

which the talents of students are encouraged and exhibited. The Talent Show 2013

comprised of 50 competitions of various genres like music, dance, literary events, theatre

and fine arts. The Final day of Scott Talent Show 2013 was held on September 6, 2013 at

the Centenary Auditorium. The Chief Guest of the day was Mr. S. Satheesh Bino I.P.S.,

Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam. The Guests of Honour was Mr. A.V.

Pathmaragam, Chief Regional Officer, Indian Overseas Bank and Mr. Sophilal Harris,

Entrepreneur, Harris Nadar Jewellers. I record my sincere appreciation to Mr. M.P.

Jeyasekar and his team for this cultural revolution in the College.

Trekking Programme:

The Department of Youth Welfare organized a Trekking on October 14, 2013 to

Chitheral Hills. More than 100 students participated in the Trekking programme.

Workshop on Painting:

A workshop on painting was conducted by the Department of Youth Welfare on

August 9, 2013. The workshop includes Pot painting, Fabric painting, Glass painting and

Flower making. 35 students participated and get benefited by this workshop.

Workshop on Motivation:

Workshop on motivation was organized on 18.01.2014 at Alumnai Hall. The four

module contents of the workshop are time management, goal setting, self confidence and

self esteem.

Special talk on dental care:

Special talk on the dental care to the hostel students was organized by the

Department of Youth Welfare on 12.02.2014 at Ida Marsden Ladies Hostel. Dr. Jairesh

A. Kingsly gave a nice talk on basic things about teeth, Diseases caused in teeth,

techniques for brushing and the relation between eye and teeth.

2. Outstanding Achievements of our students :

a. The Rotaract Club of our College has won the Best Balanced Club Award in the

Kanyakumari Rotary District. This award is given to a club for its multiple

balanced activities in a year. Our college is winning this award for the 24th year

consecutively. Congratulations to the President and her team of office bearers,

mentored by Dr. Dulip Daniels of the Department of Botany.

b. Kalesh, T. of III B.Sc. Chemistry has won the First prize in the Inter-Collegiate

Drawing competition held on June 28, 2013 conducted by Brindhavan Arts &

Sports Club, Chithirancode, Kanyakumri District.

He has won the First prize in the Drawing competition held on June 29, 2013

conducted by MSAI-Tamilnadu Chapter in Gnanadasan Ploytechnic College,

Nagercoil.

T. Kalaish has also won the II prize in Verse writing Competition in District

Level conducted in Youth Red Cross, Kanyakumari District.

T. Kalaish has won I prize and J. Jebin Abel of II M.A. English has won the II

prize in Drawing Competition in District Level conducted in Tamilnadu Forest

Department, Kanyakumari District.

T. Kalaish has also won the I prize in Drawing Competition in District Level on

26.08.2013 conducted in District Christian Trust, Kanyakumari District.

T. Kalaish has also won the II prize in Drawing Competition in Manonmaniam

Sundaranar University Level on 21.01.2014 conducted in India Autonomy

Department, Mumbai.

T. Kalaish has also won the I prize in Drawing Competition in State Level on

08.03.2014 conducted in Elaya Bharatham Seva Trust - Tamilnadu.

Mathematics had participated in the Elocution completion between four southern district conducted by the Government of Tamilnadu at the Vins Christian College of Engineering on 16.02.2014 on behalf of the birthday of the Hon. Chief Minister of Tamilnadu and has been selected for the State level final Elocution competition.

o. Arun Jancy of I B.Sc. Chemistry has won the Consolation prize with a

cash award of Rs. 1000/- in the State Level Essay competition held on

February 22, 2014 conducted by Annai Hajira Women’s College,

Melapalayam, Tirunelveli District.

p. Sneha and Arathy of II BBA Secured First Place in ‘Business Plan’ in

ORIFLAMME’14 on 10.03.2014 conducted by Department of

Management Studies, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli.

VI. Extra-curricular Activities :

1. Spiritual Activities :

In Scott Christian College (Autonomous) every working day for the Non-teaching

staff starts with prayer at 9.00 a.m. in the College office. Further, staff and students

worship in the College chapel between 9.10 – 9.20 a.m. and then proceed to their

respective classes. On Wednesdays the SCM worship (by a specific department) starts at

9.00 a.m. with a special speaker who brings the Lord’s message. On first Tuesday of

every month, there is a Scott Community Worship at 4.00 p.m. at the College Chapel

attended by the staff, students, neighbours and retired staff. On the last Sunday, of every

month we have a English Worship at 5.30 p.m.

Under-the leadership of Rev. J. Prakash Nayagam, the College Chaplain, the

students / staff conduct the morning worship, SCM programmes and Prayer group

activities. Religious Instruction and Value Educational classes are conducted for all

Christian and Non-Christian students respectively. The TAFTEE syllabus is being

followed for the RI classes, and separate certificates are distributed to those who

complete the course successfully.

University intercollegiate tournaments for the year 2013 – 175

2.1) National Level Sports

1. Our student, International Chess master, P. Shyam Nikhil of III B.A. Economics

have represented Tamilnadu in many National Chess Championship held in

various venues all over India

2. Our student Alvin Mohan of III B.Sc. Physical Education had represented Tamil

Nadu in the National Kabaddi Championship held at Patiala during December

2013.

2.2) State and District Level Sports

1. Our Football team won the II place in the Chief Ministers Football Tournament

held at Nagercoil, during September 2013.

2. Our kabaddi team won the I place in the Vavuballi tournament held at

Kuzhithurai, during August 2013.

3. Our Table Tennis team won the I place in the Chief Ministers Table Tennis

Tournament held at Nagercoil, during September 2013.

3. National Service Scheme (NSS) [7 Units]

All the seven units of the NSS comprising of seven officers and 935 student

volunteers have been actively involved in various social outreach programmes, including

improvement of civic amenities and traffic management. Their programmes included

elimination of plastics, zero waste management and legal literacy programmes.

Their contribution to the successful conduct of the Kumari Carnival – Kashmir

to Kanyakumari National Integration Rally organized by the district administration

was very much appreciated. Our units also conducted the special camps at

Azhagiapandipuram and Ilanthaivilai.

CATC CUM TSC TRG-1

The 11 (TN) BN NCC conducted the Combined Annual Training Camp CUM Tal

Sainik Camp for Boys & Girls [CATC CUM TSC (B) & (G) TRG-1] at Scott Christian

College (Autonomous), Nagercoil from June 6, 2013 to June 15, 2013. Apart from the

usual training, about 5200 rounds were used for firing practice. 502 Cadets participated

out of which 23 Cadets were from Scott Christian College, Nagercoil.

OBSTACLES

The obstacles that is re constructed in Scott Christian College (Autonomous),

Nagercoil on the 5th of August 2013, is being maintained properly and is in good

condition for training purpose.

A new flex was erected in the College premises on the 10th of August 2013, by

the NCC Army Wing.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION-2013

The 66th Independence Day celebration was celebrated on the 15ht of August

25.09.2012. Out of the 50 Cadets who participated, 6 cadets were from Scott Christian

College (Autonomous) Nagercoil.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP

Blood Donation Camp was organised on September18, 2013 at Medical College

Campus, Nagercoil and one of the cadets, Antony Melbin. S took part in it.

REPUBLIC DAY LAUNCH CAMP (RDC)

The Republic Day launch Camp (RDC) was held at The American College,

Madurai from September 18, 2013 to September 27, 2013. The following Cadets took

4. Noon-meal scheme :

This is a Teaching Staff sponsored Students Community Scheme. Through the

above scheme, nearly 45 poor and needy students with free lunch on every working day.

The committee visits the names and ascertains the eligibility of each beneficiary to

qualify for the scheme..

All eligible students get different types of scholarships and 1510 students have

been benefitted through our College. The College takes special efforts to provide

scholarships to B.C., MBC, SC and ST students.

campus interview in our College for placements on 29.01.2014. We are happy to

inform you that 19 students got selected for the post of PG and UG Teachers.

e. C-DAC one of the best institution in Kanyakumari District conducte a one day

seminar about Communication Skills, Personality Development & H.R. Interview

Practice in our campus on 31.01.2014.

f. SRV Boys Higher Secondary School Rasipuram, Namakkal District visited our

campus for a placement programme on 18.02.2014. 6 students got selected for

the post of teachers. The appointment orders were issued by the Principal.

g. ECC Academy, Nagercoil conducted a Seminar on 20.02.2014 about facing the

interview and the career opportunities in the Banking sector. All the final year

students got benefited.

h. The Placement Cell of Scott (PCS) adviced the students of final UG programme

to attend a campus recruitment drive conducted by TVS Training services in S.T.

Hindu College for the post of Sales Professional for a leading Bank & Insurace

Company on 26.02.2014. Many students got benefited.

i. The Placement Cell of Scott (PCS) sent students from the final years for a job fair

in Florence Swainson Higher Secondary School for Deaf conducted by Nehru

College of educational and Charitable Trust on 02.03.2014. Many students got

benefited.

j. The Placement Cell of Scott (PCS) sent students from the final year for

participating in the job fair on 14.03.2014 in Malangara Catholic College,

Mariyagiri. Twenty leading companies are consented to take part in the

recruitment drive. Many students got benefited.

VIII. Activities of the Scott Alumni Association (SAA) :

Scott Alumni Association (SAA) creates history and continues to add

memberships, chapters and endowments! The role of SAA in reaching out, networking

and event managing of Scott Community is highly commendable. The first floor of

alumni hall has been completed and was inaugurated on 28.08.2013. Its Office-bearers

deserve our appreciation and continued support. I record by deep appreciation to the

team of office-bearers, especially to Prof. K.K. Mohandhas for all the endeavours.

1. Dr. J. Roselet Dani Bai served as a Lecturer in Tamil in Scott Christian College

since 13.10.1994 and expired on 04.02.2014. She was a good teacher, believer in

god and was also very affectionate to the students.

2. Mrs. Emily Anna Packiam Indira George served as Lecturer in Commerce in

Scott Christian College on 26.08.1993 and was passed away in 18.02.2014. She

was a good teacher and was very kind to the students.
