While we would prefer to have stability in our class structure throughout the year, the short-term disruption caused by the changes will be made up for in the benefits students will experience over the course of the year. SITE IMPROVEMENT PLAN Our Site Improvement Plan for 2019 is a refinement of the improvement work undertaken in 2018 with a focus on improvement in two domains. Improved Reading Achievement: We will continue to focus on improving the Reading Achievement for all students, with a particular focus on our Primary students. Reading is a fundamental and essential skill necessary for success not only in education, but for better career, health and life outcomes. Our goal is to ensure all Year 2 students leave Junior Primary achieving the Department standard for Reading, equipping them with the necessary Literacy skills for success in their future study and careers. Reading achievement, as with all aspects of our young people’s education, is a shared responsibility between school, the student and the family. As such, we invite all parents and family members to a ‘Reading Success for Life’ presentation, jointly hosted by Jamestown Community School, St James School and the Jamestown Community Children’s Centre. Dr Rosie Kerin, a Literacy consultant who presented at the state-wide Department for Education Literacy summit this week, will also present on the evening. The evening will have a focus on strategies families can use to encourage their children, of all ages from birth to Year 12, to read more often and of their own accord. Please see the flyer enclosed in this newsletter for more details, and we hope to see all families attend on the 13th March. Higher Student Achievement: Our middle school staff (Years 7 – 9) are working with students to lift their achievement, particularly through a focus on improved design of assessment tasks. Through making the assessment criteria clear at the start of each task, and discussing this with students, we aim to see more students achieving in the A and B grade bands. MNSEC SWIMMING I had the pleasure of attending the MNSEC Swimming Carnival at Booleroo last Tuesday night. The 18 swimmers that represented Jamestown Community School did so with great enthusiasm, commitment and pride, and as a school community, we are very proud of the effort they put in. All swam to the best of their ability, and many of the swimmers participated in additional races on the night. Ella Thredgold did a fantastic job in coordinating the swimming team, and I would also like to thank parents who attended for their support and undertaking timing responsibilities.

Regards, Michael Gaunt Principal

R-6 NEWS

Thank you to the families for their understanding with the class restructures that took place recently. The

students have adapted well to their new class and teachers. Thank you to the efforts of the staff who have had

to alter their classrooms to accommodate new students. The teachers and students have been thrown into chaos

again this week with new whiteboards being installed in the primary classes! Hopefully next week things may

settle down at least to catch our breath!

OPEN EVENING

Thank you to the families who joined us for Open Evening last week. It was great to see so many students showing

their families their learning so far this year. I enjoyed hearing the students explaining about their work. It was

great to see the variety of work happening in all the classrooms.

SPORTS DAY

This year Sports Day is being held on Friday 8 March (Friday before the long weekend). There will be a program

that is sent home next week once finalised with times for R-5 events. The Year 6 and Year 7 students will compete

in the Year 6-12 Sports Day – participating in a range of track and field events. I know the students have been

training hard to do their best on the day! If you have any questions about the day, please don’t hesitate to ask.

LABEL BELONGINGS

Remember to label all belongings as there are a few containers and clothes that are being left around the yard

with no names on them! Makes it easier to find the owner if there is a name. Thank you for your assistance with

this.

Should you have any queries or issues, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school or via email

7-9 NEWS

OPEN EVENING Thank you to the parents and family members who attended our Open Evening. It was very pleasing to see so many visitors across our newly painted 7-9 classrooms. Students were eager and enthusiastic about showing their family members their spaces and work that was displayed. The stories that were told about how the spaces were used in prior times were both fascinating for me and the students. TRAFFIC LIGHTS Students came home this week with their first set of Traffic Lights. These slips were glued into the students’ diaries and demonstrate their progress so far this year. Please sign these and discuss with your child how they are doing at school so far this year. If you need additional information about these Traffic Light slips, please see the relevant subject teacher, your child’s Home Group teacher or myself. We wish to welcome Molly O’Dea who has been at our school for this term undertaking her 6-week placement with us. Molly has settled in well and is enjoying working across our 7-12 classes. We wish Molly the best in the coming weeks of her placement. Please contact me via the Front Office or [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. Morgan Wallis 7-9 Coordinator

10-12 NEWS VET UPDATE Embracing the flexible aspect of SACE, we have a considerable number of varied curriculum structures in place for 2019.

Congratulations to Jordan Voumard who has signed up for a Certificate 3 in Print Communications with Honeycomb Design at Clare, and to Josh Wehrmann who also signed up for a Certificate 3 in Beekeeping based in Jamestown, with his studies including interstate travel. Congratulations also to Blake Harvey who has secured an apprenticeship with Energy Australia, as a fitter and turner based at Hallett. Also, to Angus Connell

who has secured an apprenticeship with Bob Case, in construction. In addition, we have new enrolments in the following flexible options:

Andrew Cradock is complementing his year 12 studies with a Certificate 2 Creative Industry course through

the Academy of Interactive Entertainment.

Tessa Kitschke, Alicia Sims and Kate Daly have both been successful in their application to undertake a nursing

subject with CQU – Central Queensland University, based out of the Mid North Uni Hub @ Port Pirie. Jacqui

Couzner is also studying a paramedical studies subject through CQU.

Bree Alcock is completing a Certificate 3 in Animal Studies through TAFE in conjunction to her year 12 studies.

Jacob Sparks has enrolled in a Certificate 4 in Personal Training with the Institute of Personal Training.

Kent Rattley is completing Aviation Studies at Mid North Christian College

Via Open Access College (OAC) Tess Francis is studying psychology, Peppa Dunn – Child Studies, Liana Webb -

Child Studies and Alicia Hart – Accounting.

Completing additional subjects online takes a considerable amount of independence, encouraged by a genuine interest in that field. JCS also offers a mentoring support system to all students engaged in a VET pathway or in Year 12. This mechanism provides advocacy for the students and ensure that they stay on track. OPEN EVENING Thank you to the year 10 families for their attendance at the Intro to SACE session last Wednesday. It was extremely well attended and has proven beneficial in kick starting the students’ thoughts about the upcoming work experience opportunities. The University of Adelaide is running several sessions next week at JCS, with one focussed on Year 10 PLP – which will be a good follow-up to the session. Other sessions will be offered in Research Project and Tertiary Studies.

YEAR 7 NEWS The Year 7 class have settled quite well into the Middle School end of our school. Students have been enjoying their different subjects – with Technology with Mr. Jameson being a big highlight. CLASS VALUE Our class have enjoyed working together on our values, with respect being this term’s focus. Students work together to ‘win’ stars. When the class achieve 30 stars, they will brainstorm a way to celebrate everyone

upholding our focus value.

CAMP In the Year 7 Home Group letter, I outlined a camp. This camp will be a one-night stay at Bundaleer Forest and will be held in Term 4. Keep an eye out for more information coming home later in Term 3 about this camp. The class is already excited about camping together for a night and are keen to plan some activities together.
