COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 3 WEEK 7

OFFICIAL OPENING - NEW PRIMARY BUILDING The weekend of celebrations was particularly meaningful to our Primary department. We were able to officially celebrate the opening of our new Primary building and dedicate it to God’s glory. Although we have enjoyed the facilities for 18 weeks now, it was a joy to be able to stop and reflect upon His goodness to us through the provision of these beautiful buildings. It was an honour to be able to take the many visitors through the building and share with them how the teachers are using these learning spaces to apply research based strategies to maximise student engagement and learning. These facilities are a tangible reminder of how God has lavished His love upon us and we pray that His name will be magnified in and through our school throughout the years ahead.

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST & ASSEMBLY - 2 SEPTEMBER On Friday, 2 September we will be honouring those men who play a significant role in our students’ lives. We will start with breakfast (the ever faithful egg and bacon roll – cooked by our fantastic secondary prefects!), the Café 2 U van will be there and we are still organising the activity that will allow our testosterone charged males to demonstrate their machismo! Afterwards we will move to the hall, where we will continue the celebration. Please make a point to join us. It is always a great celebration of community.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Shoeboxes have arrived! For those families who wish to participate in this ministry and prepare a box for a child in need, boxes are available from the main and Primary offices. Brochures have been sent home, but more information is available at https://www.samaritanspurse.org.au/what-we-do/ operation-christmas-child/.

KISS N DROP –5 Simple Rules! The Kiss n Drop zone is designed to help parents safely collect children after school. Please remember the following rules: 1. Do not leave your car. 2. Only collect children on the northern side of the driveway. 3. Obey the road rules: no stopping on the pedestrian crossing and no U-turns on Kingsland Road! 4. Ensure seat belts are fastened before moving away from the kerb. 5. Check that it is safe before pulling out into traffic. If these rules do not work for you, please park your car in another spot and walk to collect your children from school. We are Regents Park Christian School and our behavior shows our fellow residents what being a Christian looks like.

KINGSLAND ROAD – USE THE PEDESTRIAN CROSSING! We lobbied hard with Auburn Council to get a pedestrian crossing on Kingsland Road. When an adult jay-walks not only are they putting themselves at risk, they are modelling this dangerous practice for our students. Please be safe and use the pedestrian crossing when crossing Kingsland Road.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) VALUE: Own It! Over the next two weeks, we will focus on respecting ourselves by owning our behaviour. We own our behavior when we take responsibility for our actions. This shows that we respect ourselves and others – we aren’t trying to hide who we are. When we own it, we look for ways in which we can improve in our learning and our behaviour. When we hold our children accountable for their actions, we are developing their ability to own it themselves and take responsibility for improving. Let us demonstrate respect by owning it!

On Friday 16 September, to celebrate our Book Day, the Primary will be having a Book Fair. We would love to have some parent volunteers to help us run the Fair. We need you to help the children find the books they want, take cash and Eftpos payments and help to keep everything neat and tidy. It will start after assembly and run until about lunch time. If you are able to help, please let Miss Bailey know.

PRIMARY ASSEMBLY Each Friday from (9-9:30am) we hold our Primary Assembly in the school hall. This is a time when our Primary classes come together to celebrate God’s goodness. Parents are welcome to attend, particularly when your child’s class is rostered to share in Assembly. On Friday 9 September, because of the HSC Music exams being held in the Hall, we will be having Assembly upstairs in Stage 3. We will have special seating for our parents and younger siblings so please come.

CRUNCH n SIP & LIVE LIFE WELL @ SCHOOL Good nutrition and healthy eating habits are an important part of learning. Each morning our students enjoy Crunch n Sip, when they have a drink of water and eat a serving of fresh fruit or vegetables. We ask parents to support this, by providing your child with a serving of fresh fruit or vegetables for their Crunch n Sip break as well as a drink bottle filled with water.

JUNIOR BASKETBALL REPORT On Monday,15 August our Junior Boys and Junior Girls Basketball teams travelled to Menai to compete in the South Metro CSSA Zone Basketball Gala Day. After a term of training each Friday, our Junior Boys competed strongly throughout the day, growing more and more comfortable with their teammates the more they played together. After a tough initial loss to Inaburra Christian School, the Junior boys then went on a 6 game winning streak, defeating Macarthur Adventist, Greenacre Christian School and Shire Christian School comfortably, led by Jonathan El Chammas. The junior boys, led by some inspired play from Sonny Puleiku and Lachlan Broederlow, then turned a 14-4 halftime deficit against St George Christian School into a 14-17 win. The streak also included holding off two nail biting 2 point wins against William Carey Christian School in the round robin and semi-final rounds. Our students then faced off against Inaburra in the Grand Final, giving their much fancied rivals a fright for the first half but ultimately losing 11-29 to a very talented team. Congratulations boys on representing the school so well throughout the day! Better luck next year! Mr Orr. The Junior Girls team had challenging day of competition, playing against Inaburra, William Carey, St George, Sutherland Shire and Macarthur. Achieving a win for the day, the Junior Girls beat Macarthur with a score of 23 – 16. Taking on a leading role for her team, Montanna House was our star shooter, playing as Centre. Despite a few unsuccessful games to begin, the girls learnt from every loss and improved their tactical awareness and attacking skills from game to game while displaying great enthusiasm, team spirit and sportsmanship. Thank you ladies for representing our school with such grace and for your never-failing spirit! Let’s take what we have learnt and come back stronger than ever next year! Mrs Lopez.

COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 3 WEEK 7

On Monday, 22 August our Senior Boys and Senior Girls Basketball teams travelled to Menai to compete in the South Metro CSSA Zone Basketball Gala Day. After 2 terms of training each Friday morning, our senior boys came out strong and organised in their first game, led by Jeremiah Leviste and Jordon Sarraf, defeating William Carey Christian School comfortably. The seniors were then put on the back foot with a loss to some excellent team basketball from Inaburra, led by a number of representative players. The seniors then bounced back, finding their strengths and exercising depth off the bench, defeating St George Christian School and Shire Christian School in back to back games, earning a top 4 finish and a guaranteed spot in the finals! The final round game saw Mt Annan Christian School narrowly beat our students and give them some added motivation going into the Semi Finals against the same team. Led by some passionate play from Peter Alnas and outstanding defense from Mark Kamara and Bai Rabuku, the senior boys came back focused and determined to not lose twice to Mt Annan, holding on to a 3 point lead for the last 2 minutes of the game and playing some very intelligent basketball along the way. Our students then faced Inaburra again in the Grand Final, competing early on in the game but ultimately giving way to a very well drilled team. Congratulations to our boys on representing the school so well throughout the day! A big ‘thank you’ goes to our Year 12 students who played their last game for RPCS – Mark Kamara, Jeremiah Leviste, Jordon Sarraf, Ezana Aga, Allen Hernadez, Bai Rabuku, Josh Kafa and Giovani Cuellar. Well done to the Senior Girls team for putting forth their best efforts against some very competitive teams on the Basketball Gala Day. Our Senior Girls came home with a draw against Mount Annan Christian School but were out-skilled in their other games. Regardless of a few unsuccessful games, the girls maintained a strong team spirit and determination till the end of the day. Thank you girls for giving it your all and for displaying great sportsmanship towards the other competitors. Our stand out player of the day goes to Tyler Semeri for her leadership within the team and outstanding defense. Mrs Lopez.

UNSW ENGLISH WRITING COMPETITION Earlier this term, 30 of our keen writers took up the challenge of the UNSW English writing competition. HOW TO RESPOND TO NEGATIVE SELF-TALK Part 2 By Parenting Coach Nicole Schwarz

Create an environment of support, encouragement and teach frustration tolerance using these tips.

Give Choices: Let your child have the option to make choices throughout the day, picking their outfit, afternoon snack, or where to do their homework. Give positive feedback for good choices and watch your criticism! If you give them a choice, keep your negative opinions to yourself.

Embrace Imperfection: Everyone makes mistakes – even you! Practice using light-hearted responses to mistakes, “Oops! The milk spilled! Let’s wipe it up!” Model healthy ways to handle frustration, apologise after yelling, or acknowledge your part in a misunderstanding.

Focus on the Good: Instead of nit-picking or constantly focusing on things that need to be changed, fixed or cleaned, learn to let go. Building or repairing relationship may be more important than a tidy bedroom. Try to give 5 positive statements to every 1 negative statement.

Encourage Independence: Kids need parents to help them make good decisions or stay focused but sometimes constant direction sends the message: “You can’t do it on your own.” Brainstorm or problem-solve together, ask your child’s opinion or have him offer a solution.

Value Perseverance: Focus on the little steps that lead to success, overcoming an obstacle, or moving closer to a goal. Phrases such as, “You’re working really hard on that…” or “That took a lot of effort!” help your child see the benefit in the process rather than the prize at the end.

Teach Coping Skills: Expose your child to a variety of coping and calming skills, work on deep breathing and create positive, helpful mantras. Practice these skills often so your child is prepared and knows how to handle frustrating situations and discouraging thoughts.

Seek support: If you have been working with your child for a while and still hear them struggling with negative self-talk or if they threaten to harm themselves or others, it may be time to seek help from a local mental health provider. (If your child is suicidal, please get help immediately.)

Looking up from your hands, you meet your child’s eyes. “This is a frustrating assignment.” “Yeah.” He replies. “How can I help?” you ask. Shrugging, he replies, “you could do it for me.” You both laugh. It doesn’t change the assignment, but at least you can talk about it without hearing the word “dumb.”

WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING IN C21 THIS WEEK? Does using a computer mean that we have to do more thinking? That was the question posed to Year 9 C21 this week as they continued to think critically about the impact of computers on learning and the brain. It is believed by many that as long as there is computer and Wi-Fi access, then, thinking is done by the computer, rather than the person. To help student grapple and think critically about the concept, they used a Venn diagram to compare the features of technology to the features of their brain. Students skilfully examined the similarities and differences e.g. where do I go when it is broken?, size, shape, need for more memory storage space, cost, location, portability etc, etc. Critical thinking is the process of breaking in idea or concept into smaller parts so that they can be further examined to then see the relationships and links between the parts. By using the Venn diagrams, students could examine how different the brain is to a computer and therefore the need to be actively thinking rather than relying on a computer that doesn’t do any thinking. Students also commented that the only way to fix the brain is through God’s healing.
