Principal’s Message Dear Parents/Caregivers, This term is certainly flying and it is hard to imagine that we are already half way through. From walking around the school and visiting classrooms, I have been greatly impressed by the quality of learning that is taking place. Thanks must go to the hardworking and dedicated staff and supportive parents, whose efforts have led to many great and exciting things happening at South already this year. A real strength of our school, is the consistent teamwork and commitment by many to ensure students achieve the highest possible education outcomes. Reconciliation Week This week our school will celebrate Reconciliation Week, with students involved in activities that reflect upon the achievements and rich culture of Indigenous Australians. National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians. Yesterday we marked the beginning of Reconciliation Week with a march around the school, with students carrying both the Australian and Indigenous Flags. Vince Kelly Last Friday, the students joined together in the School Hall to listen to an amazing presentation by Vince Kelly. He spoke about the journey he had undertaken to ride in The Tour de Cure and what we can all be doing to keep ourselves as healthy as possible, We congratulate him on his efforts to raise money for cancer research, and we thank him for the fantastic opportunity to hear his story. Staffing News It is lovely to welcome back to the teaching team, Mrs Landale. For the remainder of 2019, Mrs Landale will be involved in heading a lead team, focusing on the development of a strong reading culture in our school, as well as, improved use of student data to drive educational programs and future professional development for staff. DHS Yr 10 Work Experience This week we welcome Imogen Simpson and Emma East, former South students, to our school as part of the DHS Work Experience Program. We hope that they have a great time working with our students in Kinder Astronauts and 1/2 Apollo. Instructional Rounds Today we welcomed a number of teaching colleagues, from surrounding schools, into our classrooms. The intent behind this visit, is to support other schools in their educational journey of Curiosity and Powerful Learning. Teaching teams observed our teachers in practice, seeing first hand, the changes we have made to our teaching practice through our own involvement with Curiosity and Powerful Learning. I would like to thank all the staff involved for the work they put in to ensure that this visit was such a success. Professional Development Teaching Staff Last week a number of teachers participated in professional development designed to build upon teacher capacity to improve writing and reading practice in the classroom. Staff learnt how to use quality teaching and evidence based practice to improve student results. They also explored current research on effective teaching and learnt about what works best. Deni RSL Junior Fishing Club The Deniliquin RSL are initiating a different type of fishing club, where you can fish anytime, anywhere even on holidays, by just sending in your photos. Every 2 months, a Family Fishing day will be conducted, where Juniors will receive incentive prizes, and at the end of the year have a presentation night for all members. Workshops will also be run throughout the year. If your child is interested, information flyers and registration forms are available at the school front office. Completed registration forms can be returned to the school front office or dropped into the RSL club. Report Writing Week This week the teaching team will be released from class to spend time focusing on report writing. This will mean that there will be a change in routine for classroom teachers, but class programs will continue to run uninterrupted. Golf Day Huge thank you to everyone who supported our P&C organised Golf Day. Despite the cooler weather, the day was well attended. With great support from local businesses and with plenty volunteering a helping hand, the event was a resounding success raising $2948.

Fishing 4 Friends Group Last Thursday afternoon, fourteen eager fishermen visited Twin Rivers. Although the river level is dropping, we were able to cast our lines. Unfortunately I am unable to report any fish being caught. Thank you to Leah Walker for her assistance and also to parents who donated worms. Very much appreciated. Our next fishing excursion will be in a fortnight, involving our second Fishing 4 Friends group.

Philip Hodgkinson, School Chaplain The Fathering Project The Fathering Project is a not for profit organisation, supporting dads. A number of high profile Aussie men support this project, including Adam Gilchrist, Justin Langer and Tim Winton. The Fathering Project was formed when a WA doctor noticed the dying men he was treating often had one big regret — they had not spent enough time with their kids. Now the not-for-profit organisation goes into schools to set up dads' groups, organise activities for fathers and their children and provide tips on how to be more engaged with your children. The project looks to help our children's futures by inspiring and equipping Fathers and Father figures to be the best they can be. The projects website is full of valuable information and offers weekly tips on fathering.
