Greeting Wolfpack Nation!

Welcome to another year at the World’s Greatest High School – A.G. West Black

Hills!! We have been prepping all summer and are Excited to get started! As every year we have had some turnover in our staff and are welcoming some new additions

to our Black Hills family. Please help me welcome the following people:

Jill Bender – Our new attendance person taking over for Ms. Barrett

Krystin Murphy - Teaching Special Education taking over for Mr. Short Kristi Martin – Teaching Math taking over for Mr. Parascand

Erin Linn – Teaching Spanish taking over for Ms. Colbeck (Erin is also a BHHS Alum!) Heidie Vacarro – Teaching English taking over for Ms. Williamson

And of course Cathy McNamara – Assistant Principal taking over for Ms. Anderson.

In addition, we currently are looking for a part time Spanish teacher as Mr. Spencer

has taken a full time teaching position in another district. Mr. Moore in our AES room has also moved on taking a counseling position in another school district, so we will

be hiring for that position as well.

Some important dates you will want to be aware of:

Friday August 28th – we hope to have the students’ schedules up and ready for viewing on Family Access.

Sept. 8th – Link day – helping freshman transition into high school Sept. 9th – the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!

Sept. 23rd - Open House.

Some highlights of the summer, we have installed over 30 new cameras through-out

the campus improving our security and safety. Many staff and Administration have gone to trainings and workshops this summer to improve instruction and on how we

operate the school in general.

Our ASB officers attended a National conference this summer and have returned with

many great ideas to improve our climate, culture and the students experience overall. We are all excited to implement these ideas and improve.

The beginning of school can be hectic and even scary for some of our students and

even parents. Please know we are here to help everyone with the high school

experience. As always I would LOVE to hear your feedback and input on areas to improve and things that you feel went and are going well.

Thank you for all you do for your sons and daughters and being in a partnership with

us in their education. I look forward to seeing you through-out the year here at

school and at different events.

Have a great rest of your summer and GO WOLVES!!

Sincerely,

ASB CARDS

Students who wish to purchase an ASB card or a yearbook may do so in the ASB Office beginning August 17th. ASB cards, at a cost of $35, provide free admission to all home athletic events, as well as reduced admission to away athletic events, and other ASB sponsored activities throughout the school year. Members of all student groups affiliated with Black Hills High School ASB activity programs (student athletes, cheer staff, club members, music and drama students, ASB and class officers) are required to purchase an ASB card for the school year. Scholarships are available for students in financial need. Please see Ms. Center in the ASB Office for information.

Our goal is to keep parents informed about all the great events and happenings at Black Hills. We

communicate with parents in several ways. We send emails out with pertinent information, a monthly newsletter and a weekly email with the list of events that are happening. If you change your email, please contact Gloria Wilson at [email protected]. We also use a phone dialer to call about attendance issues, emergencies, and general information. If your phone number changes, please contact the main office with the new number. We mail progress reports and report cards home so be sure that your address is correct in our system. If you need to change your address, please contact Dena Curtis at [email protected].

Our webpage is also a great resource for parents and students. On the front page of our webpage you can find information about events happening at BHHS, bell schedules and our calendar. You will also find information about academics, athletics, activities and teachers WebPages by clicking on the links at the top of the page.

COMMUNICATION AT BHHS

EMERGENCY FORM

Each school year parents/guardians must complete and sign an Emergency Information form. This form provides an annual update of your student’s health status and gives the school permission for emergency treatment and transport if needed. Please complete the information and bring or mail the form to the main office. Students are not allowed to attend field trips off campus without a current school year form being on file. Washington State Law (RCW 28A.210) requires schools to have in place emergency care plans for any student with a “potentially life-threatening health condition” before the first day of school each school year. This may include, but is not limited to children with severe allergies, severe asthma, diabetes or a severe seizure disorder. For more information related to life threatening health conditions, please contact the school nurse at 709-7816.

All students must have paid all fines and fees from 2014-15 prior to playing a sport. All report cards were released and mailed for second semester, regardless of fines or fees owed. However, all fines/fees will need to be paid or cleared before you will be allowed to continue with registration or if you are planning to participate in a sport. Questions regarding these fines/fees can be directed to Ms. Center in the BHHS ASB Office at (360) 709-7810 from 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM beginning August 17, 2015. If this requirement presents difficulty, a payment contract may be worked out with Ms. Center in the ASB Office.

FINES AND FEES

Lunch Pricing:

For the 2015-16 school year, meal prices at the high school will be: Breakfast price is

$1.50/Students and $2.00/Adult. Lunch price is 2.70/Students and 3.30/Adults.

Online payment acceptance:

All current balances will follow your student into the next school year. We will begin accepting payments through Parent/Family access again in late August when Skyward is open again for Family Access. The fee of $1.50/transaction will remain the same. Parent reminder: payments to students meal accounts can only be done from “Parent” access, not the student’s Skyward account.

Report cards for the 2014 -15 second semester were mailed home at the end of June. If a grade was missing, or there was a mistake in the grade, your instructor has until the end of September to correct the error. Since only the class instructor can make grade changes, it is a good idea to contact the instructor during the first week of school to initiate a grade change.

GRADE CORRECTIONS

ID cards are required for all students and are provided at no cost. BHHS students are expected to carry their school identification at all times. While it has not happened frequently, there have been several times when unauthorized visitors have trespassed onto our school grounds during the school day or students have failed to comply with a staff member’s reasonable request. With the increasing concerns about school safety, the BHHS staff agreed that all students should carry a BHHS identification card throughout the school day. While it may be a bit inconvenient at first, we know all our students and parents want to be assured of a safe learning environment and are willing to take small steps toward ensuring that.

Identification cards are needed to buy lunch and check out books in the library.

IDENTIFICATION CARDS

The Tumwater School District provides an electronic communication system (network) that allows opportunities for students to access, share, learn, communicate and publish school-related information. In providing this network, the district intends only to provide an Internet environment that is safe and appropriate for the maturity level and need of student users. Students who violate the requirements set forth in the Technology Use Guidelines are subject to school discipline and may lose the privilege for using the Tumwater School District electronic communication.

BHHS strongly encourages students to carpool, ride the bus or use alternate forms of transportation. Driving to school and parking on campus is a privilege, and BHHS expects our student drivers to demonstrate legal and safe actions at all times. A limited number of parking spaces are provided for student parking, and the parking lot is off limits during the school day. Students will receive a fine for violation of parking regulations including parking without a permit during school hours. The BHHS Parking/Driving regulations are on the webpage under the headline section. If you have a valid driver’s license and wish to sign up for a parking space, you may do so in the ASB Office. The cost of a parking permit is $20 for the year and $10 for 2nd semester only. You must have your vehicle registration, proof of insurance and Driver’s License with you when you sign up for parking. Be sure to bring your consent form, signed by your parent, and $20 to the ASB office to receive your parking permit.

If you are aware of a new high school student in your neighborhood or a student who may wish to re-enter school, please remind the student to contact the BHHS Office as soon as possible. New students must complete several enrollment forms prior to registering for classes, and they must bring copies of their immunization records and transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) in order to complete the enrollment process. Registration forms are available online, under Academics/Career & Counseling Center/Enrollment Information/Enrollment Form.

Schedule changes will only be made during the first three days of a semester, and will not be made during class time. In order for a schedule change to be made, the student must meet with a counselor for one of the following reasons:

Your schedule is incomplete.

You did not sign up for a class that is a graduation requirement.

You did not sign up for a required class that you previously failed.

You plan to take courses at a location other than BHHS (such as NMSC or Running Start).

Your schedule has two classes scheduled during the same period or classes which conflict with each other (e.g., two world languages).

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Class Changes

must be made in

by September

11th.

See your

counselor.

O’Connor photographers will be here on Thursday, September 10th, to take pictures of all students for the yearbook and a BHHS identification card. All students must be photographed, even though seniors may be purchasing their portraits through another company. Please come prepared to have a nice photo taken, and remember you must follow the dress code in your ID picture, only use your name for the photo and may not wear a hat for your school pictures. If you wish to purchase optional portrait packages you may do so at this time. Envelopes for ordering a picture package will be mailed to you by O’Connor prior to September 10th and will also be available that day. A number of options in picture packages are available.

Children have accidents. Treatment can be expensive. . .sometimes very expensive. That’s why our school (and 1,000s of others) makes affordable insurance coverage available to you and your child through Myers-Stevens & Toohey & Co., Inc. These plans can help you prepare for those emergencies that life throws at all of us. You can choose from “School-Time only” or

plans that protect your child 24/7. A Student Health Care plan and Dental Accident plan are also available. There is even an option for your entire family’s prescription drug needs. Even if you have other coverage, these plans can still help you “fill in the gaps.” You may pick up an enrollment form at Registration or in the ASB office.

From the Counseling and Career Center It’s the beginning of a new school year and we are attempting to be proactive by providing you with important information and dates to help you in organizing and planning your schedules.

Seniors:

Your last year in high school can be exciting or exasperating. There is so much to do and so many things to remember. One way to stay on top of things is to be sure that you hear or read the Daily Bulletin. Deadlines and other pertinent information (like when to order your cap and gown, scholarship information, etc.) are all noted in the bulletin. If you do not hear the bulletin read, be sure to check the Counseling Center or the Main Office. The bulletin is posted in both areas. It is also on the BHHS website: www.bhhs.tumwater.k12.wa.us

Above all, do well in all your classes and enjoy your senior year! Remember in order to walk at graduation you must have met all the requirements for graduation.

ACT and SAT Tests

Upcoming SAT Test: October 3rd

Registration Deadline: September 3rd

Upcoming ACT Test: September 12th

Registration Deadline: August 7th

You can register online for the SAT test at www.collegeboard.com and for the ACT test at

www.act.org. Other dates are also on the websites. We

strongly recommend that you register as soon as possible to increase your chances of being assigned to the test

center(s) you request.

Scholarship information:

Scholarship information is printed in a bulletin that is located in the Career Center and also on the Counseling

Center website. It is updated on a weekly basis as well as

at times printed in the Daily Bulletin. Applications for these scholarships are also located in the Career Center.

NCAA Clearinghouse

If you are an athlete who is being considered by a Division I or II college, you will need to complete the NCAA

Clearinghouse form. You may obtain those in the Career

Center. Also, the colleges would need to have a PSAT, or preferably an SAT or ACT score on file. Check with your

counselor to make sure that the courses you are taking meet NCAA approval.

Letters of Recommendations:

If you need a letter of recommendation from a counselor, please meet with your counselor. A packet of information

needs to be completed before a letter will be written. It

includes obtaining information from three teachers of your choice and a personal data sheet. Please allow the

counselors at least a couple of weeks after receiving the completed packet to write the letter for you.

Juniors:

The process for applying to a military academy begins in your junior year. See your counselor for more information.
