2018 - 2019 ∙ ROOTED IN CHRIST: WE BELONG, WE BELIEVE, WE BECOME PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and thus may the LORD God of hosts be with you, just as you have said! Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the gate!” (Amos 5:14-15) Hello parents and guardians, I hope all is well. Welcome to April, the month of Justice. The virtue of Justice enables us to treat others in a just, equitable and unbiased manner. It teaches us to play by the rules, to take turns and to share. This virtue also calls us to be respectful of others in our family, school and parish community. As the seasonal change causes the flowers to bloom and the vegetation to become verdant we at St. Ursula will continue to seek peaceful solutions to the problems that face us on a daily basis. Paul VI said, “If you want peace, work for justice”. So let’s all be peacemakers who are forgiving, who follow rules and who do our share of what is right as we strive to respect and protect the world and all that is in it. Have a refreshing April and may the blessings of God be with you and all your loved ones. All the very best to you as we continue to educate our children to be reflective and caring members of our community. Sincerely, G. Danfulani St. Ursula CATHOLIC SCHOOL 215 Livingston Rd. Catholic Graduate Expectations

Virtue of the month is Justice

Affirmations:

I will treat others in a just, equitable and unbiased manner.

I will play by the rules, take turns and share. I will be respectful of others in my family, school and

parish communities. I will seek peaceful solutions to problems.

Reading a letter from an advocacy organization, I vow to make my hopeful yearnings into concrete

demands for change. I am a peacemaker.

I am forgiving. I follow rules and do my share. I will stand up for what is right.

I respect and protect the world and all that is in it.

Sign Up for School Messenger

One of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our students arrive safely to school each and every day. To enhance our existing absence-checking procedure TCDSB has introduced a new, more efficient student absence reporting system called SafeArrival. This new system will reduce the time it takes to verify student attendance, making it easy for you to report your child’s absence and easy for staff to respond to unreported student absences. With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance using any of these 3 convenient methods:

1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

3. Call the toll-free number 1 (833) 251-3286 to report an absence using the automated phone system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time up to a maximum of 10 consecutive days. It is important to note that when setting up your account, you must register using the email address and phone number associated with your child’s Trillium account. In addition, schools will use the SchoolMessenger Communicate automated notification system to contact parents whose child is absent when the absence was not reported in advance. The automated notification system will attempt to contact parents at multiple contact points until a reason is submitted for the absence. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts, office staff will follow up.

News around and about St. Ursula

Exploration in the ELP class

Our grade 7 students under the guidance of Ms. McDowell did a very instructive presentation during our Tribes assembly on the 4 steps of how to say ‘I am sorry’. There was a skit that depicted how information can easily be miscommunicated and therefore lead to a misunderstanding between individuals. Many thanks to the grade 7 students for their time and effort in supporting St. Ursula’s drive to create a peaceful and welcoming community. Well done!

Chocolate fundraiser My sincere thanks and gratitude to Ms. Hum for organizing our annual chocolate fundraiser. Thanks to her dedicated effort and the determination of our students and their families, $10,273.00 worth of chocolates were sold. Our school got $3513.34 from the overall sales. Spring weather

As the weather begins to warm up and the ice begins to thaw, mud patches have taken over some of our school ground. Quite a of few of our students like to play in the mud and they get muddy and wet in the process. Support us in speaking to your children to refrain from playing in the mud patches as it is a struggle to find them a change of clothing.

Explain a big scientific idea in fundamental physics, life sciences or mathematics with a short video. The challenge opens on May 1st. To take part in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, create a short video (3 minutes max) to explain a big idea in one of these fields: Physics, Mathematics, Life Sciences. Your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth keeping in mind that video is a dynamic visual medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc. is a lot more effective than standing in front of a blackboard talking. St. Ursula’s parent council meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month except when there is a scheduling conflict with mandatory school board events or any other extenuating circumstance. Please join us in the school’s library for our next meeting on April 10, 2019 at 6:00 PM if you can, your voice and ideas, plus time really matters.

Home/School Connection

Questions to ask your child when supporting them with homework:

• What are you working on? • What are you learning? • Is it challenging or not? Why? • What do you do when you are stuck on a task? • How do you know you are on the right track? • What resources do you use at school to complete this

kind of work? • What resources do you need at home to complete this

kind of work?

Reflections for a parent

• Does my child have a quiet space to complete her/his homework?

• Have I set the framework for homework routines? • Do I monitor my child’s homework for completion? • Can I give my child feedback based on the learning

goal and success criteria provided?
