Principal’s Message
Tena Koutou Greetings It is a pleasure to announce and congratulate Lindy Graham on her appointment as Principal of Craighead Diocesan school in Timaru. She will take up the position at the start of Term 2. Lindy has been on staff here since 1998 and has been an outstanding teacher and Assistant Principal. Lindy has a strong background in teaching and learning and teacher education. She has also been a superb leader and advocate for girls pastoral care in the College. A highly valued colleague and student mentor, Lindy will certainly be missed by staff and students but as a community we can be thankful for the great service she has given to Kavanagh and indeed pray for her as she embarks on a new journey.
Last week we enjoyed a strong turnout for the "Meet the Teacher Evening". Thanks to those of you who were able to come along. Our new students at all years have settled in well and the level of school and house spirit on display was fantastic on athletics day. Next week we have the Academic Blues evening. Due to the increasing numbers of students gaining excellence we have had to look for a bigger venue—great problem to have!
On building matters the refurbishment of the textile technology room is coming along well after the fire in the holidays. My thanks to staff and students, especially Mrs Robinson for all the hard work and having to make do with alternative learning spaces.
Tracy O'Brien.

Meet Our Head Students—
Head Boy Samuel Bremer
Samuel started primary school at St Joseph’s Cathedral and then moved on to Kavanagh in Year 7.
He has played several sports for Kavanagh but is now focusing on his passion, running.
Samuel is studying Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Statistics, Physical Education and Religious Education and intends to go on to Otago University to study Science.
Samuel’s favourite days on the Kavanagh College calendar are Athletics and Kavanagh Days, because of the school spirit displayed and the Musical because of the professional way it is produced!
Samuel’s goals as Head Boy of Kavanagh College for 2013 include:

WELCOME
Greetings Kia ora, Talofa lava, Malo e leilei, Kia orana
Welcome to the first edition of ONBOARD. The aim of ONBOARD is to allow the Board of Trustees to communicate directly with our community and key stakeholders on govern-ance matters. It also supports the Board of Trustees to continue its process of self-review ensuring a culture of excellence and constant improvement in line with national education priorities.
SPECIAL CHARACTER REVIEW
In November last year Kavanagh had its Special Character review. It was a very thorough process led by Br Terry Costello from Auckland. Overall we received a great endorse-ment from the review team about the quality of Catholic education at Kavanagh College and gave some very useful recommendations that the Board will incorporate to further enhance our Special Character. The full review will soon be accessible on the school’s website and I thank everyone for their input and ongoing commitment to ensuring our College retains its unique Catholic identity in Dunedin.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Already the school year is well advanced as students settle into their programs of learning for 2013. I’d like to congratulate the students and staff on an outstanding set of NCEA results that were achieved last year. Particularly pleasing is not only the high pass rates but the growing number of students achieving excellence and merit endorsement. This is a growing trend at Kavanagh that exceeds results nationally by a wide margin. It is also significant that for the second year running a Kavanagh student has topped the country in a scholarship examination subject. That accolade goes to last year’s Deputy Head Boy Adam Gorrie in Technology following on from Evan Fenemor (Drama) in 2011. Congratula-tions Adam! These results reflect a whole of school approach, where students at all levels can be given the tools to strive for success to the highest levels.
STRATEGIC PLAN 2013-2017
The principal, management team and staff have been working on this year’s annual plan as well as reformatting and building our Strategic Plan. We will be seeking feedback on the Strategic Plan 2013-2017 by the end of term one. I encourage you all to give feedback (positive or negative) as we seek to ensure the College continues to meet student needs and aspires to be an authentic 21st century Catholic school of excellence. This includes looking at a number of ways to enhance sport in the College. Another key strategic intention is the proposed development of Tennyson St. Initial discussions are underway with the Council regarding the use of the street and a traffic management plan in conjunction with the Diocese and Otago Girls High School is near completion which will provide valuable information regarding potential development and traffic safety.
JUBILEE
The College’s 25th Anniversary is to be held Labour weekend 2014. An exciting programme of events is planned so please note your diaries! As well as celebrating 25 years of Kavanagh College we also want to recognize and reconnect with as many members of the foundation schools as possible. We would really appreciate your help in spreading the word and encouraging others to sign up to the database in order to form a solid base of support for the College heading into the future. (Link to the Alumni database can be found on the College website www.kavanagh.school.nz) Thank you!
ALUMNI
The Kavanagh Alumni Trust (KAT) continues to provide invaluable support for the College with fundraising, scholarships, mentoring and connecting the College with the wider community. We are extremely fortunate to have such a highly motivated, enthusiastic and professional group of former students dedicated to improving educational opportunities for our current students. Please support them in any way you can.
UNIFORM
Uniform is always on the agenda as we continue to aim for excellence in this - as in all areas. Feedback from Board surveys indicated this was one area for improvement. The focus recently has been to remove the variations that had crept in. The majority of students wear their uniform with pride but we expect all students to be visible examples of the high standards in the College especially when in public so we make no apologies for requiring management to keep the pressure on. We appreciate your help in this - it is a team effort and teachers have better things to do!
GARDENS
Over the last year the gardens have undergone a complete upgrade. With the help of some grants, donations, professionals and enthusiastic helpers we now have a much more pleasant environment for our students and staff. Particular thanks to Wendy Moginie of Run 394 Landscape Architecture Ltd for her vision and generously donated time and effort as well as to our loyal and hardworking PFA members. Thank you all. You are welcome to have a wander sometime and see the transformation.
BOARD ELECTIONS
Boards of Trustees’ elections are upcoming. Election date is set for May 30th. Now is a good time to think about putting your or someone else’s name forward for election. Board members represent a cross-section of the community and everyone has something valuable to contribute. It is not too onerous, very rewarding and also enjoyable. Nomination forms will be posted out at the end of Term 1 and you are also welcome to contact any current member to have a chat if you are interested (contact details are on the website). More details to follow.
Finally best wishes to you all for a very happy and successful year at Kavanagh for you and your students. Barbara Wilkins-Chairperson, Kavanagh College Board of Trustees
