Kings (especially before the French revolution) didn’t need to be punctual. They could show up whenever they wanted, because after all people would wait for them, well because they were kings. King Louis XVIII of France, to whom this quote is often attributed, suggested that one way a king could, and should, show respect for other people is to meet them at the appointed time. It was a way of letting people know that their time was of equal value. If this is true for kings, then it is most certainly true for all of us. And of course we know that this is most definitely a life skill which the future employers of our pupils will ex- pect; which is why we have been reminding all of our pupils this week of the need to be punctual to school. The school day starts at 8.35am. In reality this means that every pupil will need to be in the academy before that. We are open bright and early and there are a good few pupils who will be in the academy, completing their homework, chatting to their friends, having a quiet start to the day in the LRC before school, or just have a catch up in the Dining Hall. There are though, other pupils who are rushing through the door at the last minute, or even later, getting their day off to a bad start from the word go. We will be picking up those pupils who are late to the academy and taking their time back after school to make up for their lateness, so please do make sure that your son/daughter is on time to school. We know that many of them leave you on time in the morning, and yet sometimes still manage to be late, or very nearly late, getting to us. If punctuality is to be a life skill practised and instilled during their school life, then now is the time to get into those great habits and be here on time. This week has also seen the launch of our new academy website. We have taken the time to consider what information to put on there, how to make it as useful and accessible as possible to you all, but would welcome any feedback on other items which you would like to see on there. Please do let me know if you think we are missing a vital piece of info. Our new website address is: http:// shenleyacademy.e-act.org.uk/ but don’t worry if you don’t remember that – our old web address will au- tomatically forward you to the new site. All of the old info is there, hopefully in a more accessible format, and will work on mobile phones, ipads and tablets in a far more user friendly format. Please do check in and then let me know what you think! In the meantime: a reminder that we have a teacher training day on Monday 13 th November and so the academy will be closed to all pupils. This is an E-ACT wide training day and we will be sharing training with many of our colleagues from across the network. It promises to be an exciting day of learning. With best wishes Lucy Monk, Headteacher

Principal’s Column

‘Punctuality is the politeness of kings’, said King Louis XVIII of France…. But what did he mean? Kings (especially before the French revolution) didn’t need to be punctual. South Birmingham Cross County Championships Shenley Cross Country Team competed on Wednesday 27th September 2017 against 19 schools from across South Birmingham. All pupils performed to a high standard doing different distances up and over our Shenley Fields …and did I mention the hills and the rain!!!

The results are gathered as a team event for each race. Each athlete is given a finishing point which is added on to a

grand total. The team with the lowest amount of points wins! Each race had over 50 athletes from all the schools in

South Birmingham and did extremely well in the high standard entered for this year.

Year 7 football The season so far

The Year 7 boys have experienced a fantastic start to their footballing lives here at Shenley Academy. They are cur-rently sat top of the league and are through to the 3rd round of the All Birmingham Cup competition as well as the quar-ter final draw of the Kings Norton and South Birmingham football championships. The team hold a 100% win rate hav-ing scored a total of 19 goals and only conceded 3. So far there have been 28 students that have represented the school, all of which have demonstrated a great attitude and large amount of respect. During the matches there have been excellent displays of teamwork, determination, passion and kindness. This has led to some really impressive per-formance. Their results so far are included below: League results: Kings Heath Boys 1 v 5 Shenley Academy Shenley Academy 10 v 0 Bournville Shenley Academy 2 v 1 University of Birmingham Friendly matches: Shenley Academy ‘B’ 10 v 0 Bartley Green ‘B’ All Birmingham Cup Round 2 – Arden 1 v 2 Shenley Academy It is essential that the lads continue to stick together and work hard for one another as the season will get tougher as we reach the latter stages. Year 9 football KNSBFA League Match

University of Birmingham School 5 v 1 Shenley Academy

On the back of their excellent 2 – 1 victory over Four Dwellings the Year 9 team had a tricky away match against the University of Birmingham school. The game started with UoB school looking to take control of the game from the start. They were attacking with pace and managing to find gaps to play the ball through. The UoB players were timing their runs with precision resulting in them being able to get round the back of the Shenley defence. Their first goal came af-ter a tackle was missed and left them free to put a cross in to the back post, this was finished with precision from very close range. UoB quickly found themselves 3-0 up with little response from Shenley. The pitch was a lot bigger then Shenley had been used to playing on which resulted in the Shenley players not using the full width of the pitch, there-fore the passes were very straight and tight, which allowed UoB to easily break down any attacks. Towards the end of the first half Shenley started to have more joy in finding gaps, Lewis Fullilove was pulling defenders out wide and gaps were starting to form. Deacon Dempster-Jones, who was again very good throughout, made a great angled run and was found with a well-timed pass. Deacon carried the ball forward and picked his moment to strike the ball to the right of the goalkeeper. Half time 3-1. Shenley played some better football in the second half and started to use the space available on the pitch. Chances were starting to form, however, the final pass would often result in the attack breaking down. UoB school managed to score two more goals from through balls to make it 5-1 and this was to be the final score. Shenley put in a well spirited display but could not find the correct final ball on a difficult afternoon. As the winter break starts Shenley find themselves top of the league with two wins from three league games. Year 7 football ‘B’ team match

Shenley Academy ‘B’ 10 v 0 Bartley Green ‘B’

After excellent commitment and a fantastic turnout in all the training sessions it was only fair for the year 7 students to have a ‘B’ team fixture this half of the season. Their first match was a local fixture against the Bartley Green ‘B’ team. The students were excited about the fixture and were able to translate this in to high levels of focus and effort. The team started at a fast pace with individuals looking to prove themselves with forward runs towards the box. However, the team found themselves trying to do too much as individuals which resulted in them missing a number of passes to team mates in better positions. The team quickly settled in to the match and started to create chances. The opening goal came from Leonard-Constar Magureanu with a strong strike from inside the box. This goal was the start of many more to come with the Shenley team applying constant pressure on the Bartley defence. The second goal came from Danny Tierney after he turned his defender well and finished low in to the corner. The third goal was the result of a dan-gerous cross from Joshua N’Sapu which deflected off the Bartley defender and past the keeper. Half time 3–0. With the team already in a strong position the half time message was to aim to get your head up and look for passes to players in a better position. The students took this on board and a fine passing move resulted in Alex Young scoring at the back post. Shenley continued to dominate the game and the excellent Jiah Hurlston-Singh was continually moving the ball quickly to team mates. Further goals came after excellent passing moves. The goal scorers included Danny Tierney x 3, Subhan Jahangir x2, Alex Young x 2, Jiah Hurlston-Singh x 1, Leonard-Constar Magureanu x 1. An excellent team performance that the students should be proud of. Well done! Team: C Tierney, B Burke, O Cunnigham, D Johnstone, J N’Sapu, S Jahangir, J Hurlston-Singh, E Graham, A Young, L Magureanu, D Tierney, H Neilson, C Diaw. Mr Blakeway, PE & Health

Art Visit to Warwick University Three Year 13 art students visited Warwick University on Monday 6th November to participate in four lectures from professional practising artists. This formed part of the BTEC Level 3 art course in which students are expected to investigate the different creative processes used by artists. Amongst the artists were; Andrew Logan a Bohemian artist responsible for de-signing the roof garden of the famous London fashion store “BIBA” and creating eclectic bejewelled fashion, sculpture and jewellery based on Egypt and India. David Montgomery, photographer of the rich and famous including; Her Majesty the Queen and the Rolling Stones. Rhian Malin the contemporary ceramicist and Rod McFayden the Royal Academy painter. Students enjoyed the experience of visiting the Arts Centre and attending lectures in a University setting. They will now be using their written notes and observations to develop into creative

sketchbook pages and will be using some of the ideas shared by the artists to create practical work.
