Kia ora and welcome to the final Wakatipu High School newsletter for 2017. WHS does not wind down at the end of year - in fact it feels like it winds up! Three big events have happened this week: Branches came out on Sunday. It was a great camp - the weather was kind and the students were fantastic.

My very real thanks to everyone who supports Branches, including staff, Branches Trust and the community, and enables us to provide this amazing opportunity for our students (and ignore the rumours and headlines - Branches is not changing next year :) ).

Graduation on Monday was a huge evening for Year 13 students and their friends and families. It was a fine send off with some wonderful moments, and a great display of pride in the school by our graduating students.

Junior Prizegiving on Tuesday marked the end of the school year for students. It was great to see so many parents in attendance, thanks for supporting your child and the school. Congratulations to all recipients of academic and special awards. A full list of prizewinners is included below, and Junior Reports were sent out on Tuesday evening.

New School - a few updates below: Staff Inductions have been held this week so we are all ready to go for next year. The school is essentially

finished now with landscaping, final touches and testing etc being conducted. We had a blessing for our old school yesterday. Some distinguished former staff and BoT members joined us

and we shared some memories on a walk round, followed by a karakia and waiata to farewell our ‘old’ school - which has been a great home to WHS since 1980.

We will hold some ‘Open Days’ for parents and our community next year - keep an eye on the website and we’ll keep you posted.

2018 Start Dates - are below and on our website. Please note that our office reopens at 10am on Wednesday 24th January. A huge thanks to everyone who has engaged with and supported us this year, it has been another good year for WHS. I would like to wish students, staff and families a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and hope everyone has a great break with family and friends :) Steve Hall Principal

Peter Doyle from Queenstown Lions Club donated a cheque of $10,000 to Louise Ward, Chairperson from Branches Trust. This was presented at the Wakatipu Senior Citizens Christmas afternoon tea last Sunday in Arrowtown. Special thanks to Queenstown Lions Club for their generous support.

Some of our fantastic students are putting on a great show called 'Made by Kate' this Sunday 17 December as a fundraiser to help their awesome Drama Teacher Kate Moetaua. Join them for a night of fun, theatre, song, and dance through the years of past and present Wakatipu High students. They promise to dazzle, delight and entertain for the most worthy of causes. Kate has changed the course of so many lives, and this performance gives them the chance to express the love and appreciation of this special woman, whilst showcasing the fabulous talent that she has inspired. The line-up includes amazing pieces from Kate’s past and present students, with some incredible numbers from Kate’s former musicals, including Baggy Trousers (Our House, 2014), Don’t Break the Rules (Catch Me If You Can, 2016) and you’re sure to be up and dancing along to Footloose (Footloose, 2012). Along with these fabulous numbers we have skits from former drama students, live music by the Wakatipu High School Jazz Combo and Bathsalts, and some incredible dancing that is sure to get you on your feet. So put on your best frock, sunniest smile, and bring your wallet for some fabulous silent auction prizes and spot prizes. The ticket includes welcome drink and canapés. Licensed bar, wine and beer available for purchase. Tickets are sure to sell out quick, so make sure to purchase yours now at Eventfinda. www.eventfinda.co.nz/2017/the-made-by-kate-show/queenstown All proceeds go towards Kate's cancer treatment and supporting her family during this difficult time.

To the entire WHS community, My family and I wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been helping and supporting us and who continues to do so during this very challenging and uncertain time. We are overwhelmed by support from staff, students and families. Much love to you all Kate Moetaua and family

Dear Parent /Caregiver The Ministry of Health has advised that New Zealand is in the early stages of a national outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis). However in Southern DHB there have been higher than usual rates over the last 6 months which means we have been in response mode for some time. Whooping cough is highly infectious and is spread when someone who is infected has a runny nose or cough. Who is at risk? Infants under the age of 12 months who are not old enough to have been fully vaccinated are most at risk of serious illness and complications. Children who have not been fully vaccinated remain most vulnerable to infection and it is therefore recommended that they are vaccinated as soon as possible to increase their chances of protection. Children who have been fully vaccinated, should have protective immunity to the illness for a few years and may not develop the symptoms or their symptoms may be milder. Unfortunately, as immunity fades over time, and catching the infection also does not provide lifelong immunity, older children and adults can still get and spread the infection. Symptoms and signs of whooping cough Initially, a runny nose and an irritating cough, slight fever that may be followed by spasms of coughing some days later. The cough can last for weeks and may have a “whooping” sound during coughing fits, gasping for breath or vomiting after coughing. People are infectious from the start of the runny nose until 21 days later. Antibiotics can help reduce the infectious period if taken in time. Children often appear well between coughing fits and may not have all of the above signs/symptoms. What can you do? Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and prevent spread of disease.
