From the Administrators
It is very important for parents to meet
with their child’s teacher to understand
how your child is performing at school
and how you can help support them at
home. Everyone is encouraged to
attend Parent/Teacher Conferences
especially if
you did not
attend
conferences
in the fall.
This school year is quickly winding
down, before you know if it will be May!
We have so much more work to do
before then and we need your support
to make sure that your children get the
best education on a daily basis. Please
make sure your children are at school
every day and that they are well rested
and on time with completed homework
to begin their full day of learning!

Importance of Independent Reading Students who read more - read better! They develop more expansive vocabularies and achieve higher levels of reading and writing development. Daily reading is one of the best ways for your child to:
Learn new vocabulary and information
Increase speed and the ability to read smoothly and accurately
Improve comprehension
Notice authors’ writing styles, which in turn helps their own writing
Develop greater interest in reading and learning
Develop a love of reading To prepare for reading at home, you can help your child choose what we call “just right” books. This means your child:
Is interested in the book
Can read and figure out almost all of the words
Can tell you what the story is about or what he or she is learning
Can read fairly smoothly (because if your child is stumbling over many words, he or she will not be able to focus on reading for understanding).
You can help your child select a “just right” book by using the Five Finger Rule. As your child reads,
have him or her count on one hand any unknown words. If there are five or more different unknown words on a full page, that book is too difficult for your child to read alone.
We want your child to enjoy reading for pleasure and information and to become a stronger, more flexible reader. You can do this at home by creating a comfortable, encouraging environment for independent reading. Be a model, help your child select “just right” books and set aside time for reading. The pay-off will last a lifetime!
