Parent Council

The March Parent Council meeting will be on Tuesday, March 21st at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.

Please enter through the south parking lot doors. All of our parents are encouraged to attend.

Lunch Program Reminder Students in grades 1 - 4 do not have access to microwaves in their lunch rooms for their safety. Please send food that does not requiring heating. We would recommend warming food at home and wrap-ping it in foil or putting it into a thermos so that it will still be warm at lunch time. Also, please be reminded that students need to bring their own cutlery.

Thank you for your understanding andcooperation.

All registration forms for 2017-2018 should be handed in as soon as possible

High School Registrations are due Monday, March 6,2017

We have had a very busy month of physical activity in the gym! Our early years students have been very active participating in cooperative team and basketball related activities. Our middle years have also been hard at work refining their basketball skills both in physical education lessons and during extra curricular activities. Our grade 7/8 boys and girls basketball teams practice and play games twice a week. Our boys and girls basketball teams have been working hard on their skills and are improving everyday! The year-end basketball jamboree is coming up on March 10th and 11th. A schedule for the year-end jamboree will be sent home with the players as soon as it becomes available. Come on out and cheer on our grade 7/8 basketball teams as they wrap up another successful basketball season. Ms. Holt, Physical Education Teacher

MUSIC NEWS

King George Music Activities Jan-March Students in grade 4-6 have been working on an alto recorder and soprano recorder song called “Mending Wall”. This has given them a chance to practice reading music notation. They have also had a chance in February to dance the dance of the Philippines called “Tinikling”. Students take turns dancing between two long sticks that are pulled in and out by two other students in a pattern of three beats, trying not to get “caught”. We have explored creating music to go with this dance that is in 3/4 time, while using the Orff instruments (the xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels). Students in K-2 /3 have been doing a variety of songs, games and folk dances. The story of “The Sound of Music” was told and excerpts played from the musical as students learned the song, “Doe a Deer”. Kindergarten students have practice galloping to the music, walking to music such as “Teddy Bear’s Picnic” and using puppets of all kinds to explore our singing voices. Grade 3/ 4 students created a movement piece with ribbons, scarves and toy fanfare trumpets while exploring the music “Flight to Neverland” from the movie “Hook”. We have played some songs on the soprano recorder as well as created a jazz song on the Orff instruments ( xylophone, metallophones and glockenspiel instruments) called “Step Back Baby”. We have had a chance to learn a couple of singing games like “Chick-a-ma Craney Crow” and “Stella Stella Ola”. King George Choirs at the Festival March 6 The King George Grade 3-4 and Grade 4-6 Choirs will be singing at the Brandon Arts and Music Festival on Monday, March 6. Parents and friends can come and watch at the Western Centennial Auditorium. The grade 4-6 choir will sing between approxi-mately 10:30 and 11:15 and the grade 3 / 4 choir will sing at 1:00. There is a fee for audience members of $3.00. The students have been practising two contrasting songs to be performed and adjudicated. There is no cost to students and waiver forms have been sent home. Students in grade 3 / 4 should plan to eat their lunch at school as we leave during the lunch hour. Choir at Cultural Evening March 23 The grade 4-6 choir will be singing a song at cultural evening on March 23. The evening starts at 6:30.

Library News

With Mrs. Kirby off on maternity leave, I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to look after the library. Thank you to all the staff and students at King George School for helping to make the transition as smooth as possible and I am looking forward to working with all the classes in the school, some in a slightly different capacity. In order to support Cultural Days, which are coming up March 21-23, there are books on display in the library as well as a beautifully decorated bulletin board outside the library thanks to the incompa-rable Mr. Boyd. Anyone who wants more information about many of the cultures found all over the world should come see what the KG library has to offer.

Coming up on March 15th Mission: Munschpossible Manitoba Tour will be stopping off at King George for a presentation. Our library will be featuring Robert Munsch books beginning March 1st in anticipation of this presentation. We will continue to display cultural books as well for the upcoming cultural evening!

I have had the great fortune to be doing a lot of co-planning with the talented middle years teachers at King George School lately. We were able to take advantage of the divisional “Design Labs” in or-der to plan a grade 4/5/6 math unit as well as a grade 8 water systems unit. Coming up we will be tackling the grade 8 cells and systems unit. Once these units are polished up and ready to be imple-mented I look forward to working alongside the teachers in the classroom.

Mrs. Cullen’s Grade 7/8

Classroom Highlights

Recently in 7/8 Cullen we have been examining the properties of fluids in science. Our students worked through a number of stations involving the exploration of fluids. A fluid is defined as anything that flows. A fluid can be a gas of some sort or any

liquid so long as it flows. These stations included racing a pom-pom across the table to test the variation in force behind two different diameters in straws. Students also examined the effects of gravity and pressure on fluids. They did this by filling a cup with water, placing a piece of cardboard over it and then turning the cup upside down. Once the gravity equalized, the cardboard stopped the water from flowing out of the cup. Our students really enjoyed these hands on learning opportunities. We are now using this knowledge to build a hydrau-lic or pneumatic system!

Mrs. Jameson Grade 5/6 Highlights

We are working on Literature Circles and reading responses. Students choose a book that they are interested in reading and then create responses connected to their reading. The students are referring to their reading rubrics to self-assess their connections, inferences, and quotes to support their opinion of the author’s style of writing. The Adolescent Literacy Summit is April 12-13 in Winnipeg and our class has been asked to create center- pieces for the tables. We are making wooden cookies with black chalk paint in the middle; all the students are writing their favourite quotes about reading or from a book on one side of the wooden pellet. Those attending the Summit will be able to take their center-piece home with them. We have started mindfulness practices in the classroom as one our strategies for being in con-trol of our own emotions. Everyone is responding well to the breathing techniques and so far no one has fallen asleep. We are keeping busy, but looking forward to spring and warmer weather.
