PRINCIPAL REPORT
Hello everyone,
Congratulations to our District Champion swim team! Due to a restructure of the sports areas, we now form
part of the Bridge Inn North District. At a combined North and South carnival our team were successful in
securing the North title. Well done to Mr Hough and our talented swimmers, many of whom will progress to the
Division Carnival shortly. At Whittlesea Primary School we have a long term commitment to teaching children
essential swimming skills and water safety. Once again, swimming lessons will be conducted for all year levels
in Term 4 and we are planning for a carnival of our own at the end of the year.
Thank you to all parents and guardians who attended meet and greet interviews throughout this week. While
we appreciate that 10 minutes is a short window of time, we hope you found the opportunity to connect
personally with your child’s teacher worthwhile. This year we introduced a pre-interview questionnaire to help
us identify topics for discussion. If you have any additional feedback please send correspondence through the
compass system or the school email address – [email protected].
Please be aware that Friday, March 15th will be a student free day. On this day our entire staff will be attending
the ‘Change the Climate’ conference. This outstanding professional learning opportunity will give our teachers
and education support staff the chance to learn from leaders such as George Sugai, a pioneer in the field of
school wide positive behaviours. We look forward to bringing back new learning to our school and continuing to
improve our school into the future.
Until next week,
Ty Hoggins
Principal
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT
Hello everyone,
Thank you to all of our students, parents and carers for attending our ‘Meet and Greet’ interviews this week. At
Whittlesea Primary School, learning is an important partnership between home and school. Please encourage
your child to share their learning with you whenever and wherever possible. Whether it be reading books, telling
the time, writing birthday cards, counting money or playing games; every opportunity to extend your child’s
reading, thinking and problem solving skills will support their learning at school every day.
This week, students from years 3-6 took part in the district swimming event at WaterMarc in Greensborough. In
the lead up to the event, all of the competitors trained early in the morning, twice a week at the Whittlesea Swim
Centre. I am very proud to share that our school placed FIRST on the day, an outstanding achievement. We wish
all of the swimmers going through to the division event at Northcote Recreation and Aquatic Centre on the 5th
March the very best of luck.
Did someone say CLUBS! Yes, clubs are back for 2019! Ms Betty has created our clubs timetable for Term 1 and
this is what it looks like so far. We will post future updates of new clubs in the newsletter.
Clubs Term One
Thank you to those families that have supported our school through paying school fees and the
excursion/incursion levy. Did you know we offer an alternative to BPAY, with the option of making payments
through CompassPay? This can be done in the same way as paying at the office or using BPAY. As shown below,
a notification will appear on your Compass dashboard. Once you ‘Click here to proceed’ on your dashboard, you
will see five [5] payment options per child.
These multiple options allow you to either, pay your booklist & excursion/incursion fee UPFRONT or alternatively,
you can pay by INSTALMENTS. You can also choose to make a voluntary contribution to the 2019 Building Fund.
These funds contribute to minor capital works, approved by School Council.
Upon payment, a prompt will appear requesting you digitally sign the parent payment policy, incursion/excursion
levy and voluntary building fund agreements. By signing each agreement, you acknowledge the payment you are
making. If you choose the instalment option, there are four [4] scheduled instalments throughout the year. Please
note the conditions of payment below before confirming to pay by instalments.
Once you have made a payment you will receive a Payment Confirmation from CompassPay via email. Each
payment option will remain on your dashboard until all charges are complete. The office will also continue to
accept cash and EFTPOS payments for booklist and excursion/incursion levy payments. If you have any queries
about CompassPay, please contact the office.
If you get the chance this weekend, head down to the Whittlesea Showgrounds and support this year’s Whittlesea
Pro Rodeo.
Best wishes for a wonderful weekend with your family

Last Friday the boys and girls cricket teams walked down to AF Walker Reserve for our first match of the season
against Hazel Glen College. Both teams played exceptional cricket, with the boys winning 188-100, and the girls
winning 155 – 69. The highlight of the day was our sportsmanship, with both teams encouraging their
opposition and thanking the umpires after the games.

Last Friday, WPS boys and girls soccer teams played a home game against Hazel Glen College for our first
match of the season. Both teams performed really well and the game resulted in a draw with no scores.
Each member of our teams worked effectively and cooperatively and helped each other succeed during both
matches. We reviewed our game tactics and we are super excited to do our personal and team's best for our
next match.

Community Story
Story is the glue that helps to form and strengthen community. In many ways the story about our community
roots can be lost under the busyness of life or it simply goes back too far to have a clear picture of what really
happened in those early years. Even the smallest community unit such as the family has stories handed down
from past generations, like heirlooms, and in the same way these stories help to bring a family together.
Whether they are funny or sad, they play a part in our formation as people. Stories can also enter into our lives
from outside to inspire and challenge us.
I can think of one such story about a collection of schools in rural India in the 1980’s. The teachers were on
strike for a number of weeks. The women of those village communities immediately came together and
organised their children’s learning at those schools. They themselves were illiterate so they organised the older
children to teach the younger children and arranged for high school student visits to help the upper years
review their lessons. The children had a marvellous time doing education differently and the mothers found
they were effective managers of the learning environment.
I have started to research Whittlesea Primary School’s history and if anybody has a good story of the old days at
the school please tell me about it. Here is one that happened in 1927 when Stanley J. Stainsby was ‘Head
Teacher’ (1925-1927). For a number of winter months, all lessons were conducted in the nearby Memorial Hall
(demolished 1987). The school was being remodelled with up-to-date lighting facilities and other
improvements. Stainsby let the senior students take charge of the junior students for ‘routine learning’. All the
students enjoyed the ‘exotic’ experience and the eleven senior students were not educationally compromised
because each one passed the state’s Merit exam that year. Both stories share a similar sense of vision,
confidence and trust in the community that surrounded them.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Selling our meat direct to public is a relatively new venture, however we have been breeding cattle and sheep
on the property for the last 15 years. In the past our cattle have gone to market and because of the high
quality, the carcasses are almost always exported overseas to Russia or Japan. Although we ourselves have been
eating the amazing produce that we grow, we know that meat of this quality is very hard to find in the shops.
Overseas buyers will pay premium prices so the premium quality meat goes offshore. This doesn’t seem right to
us. We put a lot of effort into breeding & raising the highest quality animals in the most ethical & sustainable
way possible so the desire to farm in this way has led us down the path of marketing our product to people
who care equally about what they are eating, and so our journey as Aroona Produce began.
Our animals are 100% grass fed. This means they live their lives in large paddocks & are free to roam & graze.
This is a healthy natural lifestyle. It also means the composition of the meat is healthier for us, the main
difference being that it contains up to 5 times more Omega 3 fatty acids than grain fed beef, among other
things.
We do not use any growth promoting hormones & we don’t feed any genetically modified feeds. We don’t
need to use antibiotics because our herds are healthy & well managed with ample space.
Our cattle are grown out to 2 - 2.5 years of age, roughly 500-600kg. This means the meat has more natural
marbling & a fuller flavour. Most of the beef that comes from large scale producers would be slaughtered closer
to 1-year-old & usually finished on grain in a feed lot. Lambs are also grown out longer than average.
Our beef is dry aged for 14 days, which further improves the flavour and tenderness. All meat is professionally
butchered & cryovaced in convenient portions for storage in your fridge or freezer.
We sell our beef in 10kg mixed-cut boxes at $23 per kg
Due to the fact that we are utilising the whole animal, each box will vary slightly, but will contain:
A roast Prime Cut Steaks Diced Beef Ribs Sausages
Mince Osso Bucco Gravy beef Schnitzels BBQ Steak
We sell lamb as a ‘half lamb’ which is usually between 7-9kg at $21 per kg and includes:
2 Roasts Rack of lamb Chops – loin & chump Mince Necks
Orders can be made via phone, email or Messenger, meat is available at 8-10 week intervals. Find us on
Facebook and Instagram. T: 0434 585 496
