Booklists will be distributed soon to our 2018 students. Booklists include not only the stationary items that

are required for the following year but also the essential educational items and voluntary financial

contributions. These contributions are:

1) Essential Education Items

These are items, activities or services that are essential to student learning of the standard curriculum. These

were previously known as curriculum fees. Government funding supports “free” instruction not the items

listed above which support student learning. We work hard to reduce these costs to support affordability for

our families and provide many options of support should this be required.

2) Voluntary Financial Contributions

The Buildings & Grounds and Library Contributions are voluntary. The Library Contribution is fully tax

deductible for you when completing your personal tax return. Families have the choice of contributing and

nominating an amount of their choosing. We certainly appreciate the support we receive from the families at

Chelsea Heights Primary School.

In 2018 our Buildings and Grounds contributions will be used to:

improve our playgrounds and general maintenance

create an ANZAC garden where our Gallipoli Oak “grandparent” tree, grown from acorns originally

sent to Australia by soldiers fighting at Gallipoli in World War 1, will be planted

assist with works completed through our School Working Bees.

In 2018 the Library will use their contributions to:

purchase new resources and take-home readers

repair and replace books

3) Optional Extras

In early December, you will also receive a breakdown of the Optional Extras (formally known as Excursion/

Incursion Levies). Optional extras are in addition to the curriculum and must be paid prior to attending any of

the activities. The word ‘Optional’ refers to the fact that attending the activities is optional. If you require

any financial assistance to support your child attending these events or activities you are welcome to make

an appointment with the school or alternatively we can provide Centrepay and CSEF forms which allows

health care card holders to fund camps, sports and excursions through government subsidies.

3R’s Trial At Chelsea Heights Primary School we are committed

to the development of the personal and social

capabilities of our students. Social and Emotional

Learning (SEL) is defined as:

“…a process for helping children and even adults

develop the fundamental skills for life effectiveness.

SEL teaches the skills we all need to handle ourselves,

our relationships and our work, effectively and

ethically. Teaching SEL skills helps create and

maintain safe, caring leaning environments.”

Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional

Learning (CASEL)

To achieve these aims we are guided by the Play Is

The Way (PITW) philosophies and self-reflective

language. The PITW program has been in place for 5

years and has achieved great success in

building independent, self-motivated, empathetic,

lifelong learners. As a school community, we feel that

we are ready to delve deeper into this program and

further develop our wellbeing program by

implementing the PITW 3Rs Method (Reflection,

Repair & Restitution).

The 3Rs Method is an intervention to help all

students, especially those who are having difficulty

with their behaviour, develop the self-management

skills required to function effectively in primary

school.

The 3Rs Method uses Guide Sheets that, with the

assistance of the teacher, explicitly teach SEL skills.

Students are also given the opportunity to make the

restitution that facilitates the repair of relationships.

The 3Rs Method helps students to adhere to the

standards of behaviour expected by our school and is

for all year levels. It builds a sustainable culture of

safety and support.

3Rs Method Trial

To support the implementation of the 3Rs Method, the

CHPS Welfare team determined that a trial in one area

of the school would be the best approach. We have

reviewed incident data and selected a level within the

school which has the highest number of reported

incidents. Historical data was also reviewed and

evidenced a high level of reported incidents for this

cohort in previous years.

The trial commenced in Term Three. Professional

development was provided to the Trial Level teachers

through a Wilson McCaskill PD, professional readings

and collegial discussions. Throughout the

implementation, the staff have worked closely with

both the Sub-School Manager and Welfare teams.

Several teachers and Leadership also visited other

primary schools to observe and discuss their PITW

journey and 3Rs implementation.

The Trial Level teachers followed Wilson McCaskill’s

‘3Rs Process of Implementation’ as stipulated by the

PITW Enrichment Manual. The students were

introduced to the Rights and Virtues (The Pathway to

Empathy), which reinforce and support the current Key

Concept posters (e.g. Have reasons for the things you

say and do). Similar to the Setting the Climate process,

students participated in a number of activities and

circle time sessions to unpack each of the rights and

virtues. Weekly PITW sessions have been given the

highest priority by the Trial Level – they are targeted

and needs based sessions.

Curriculum Report

It is hard to believe we are already in our final

term of the school year. What is most exciting

however, is the growth our students are making

both academically and socially, and the impact of

the learning and wellbeing programs offered at

Chelsea Heights Primary School. I would like to

take this opportunity to celebrate our 2017

Naplan data which reflects at least 25% of our

Year 5 students making high relative growth in

Reading, Writing and Number.

Relative growth data is obtained by looking at the

students who sat Naplan at Chelsea Heights

Primary School in Year 3, and measuring the

growth they have made in the two years between

Year 3 and 5. The most effective way to achieve

high growth is by providing a genuinely

differentiated curriculum which has been a huge

focus for all teachers over the last three years.

Early this term you will have received a Term 4

Overview that outlines the key concepts being

covered in the curriculum at each level. Please

familiarize yourself and if you have any questions

please direct them to your child’s classroom

teacher. Knowing what your child is learning about

at school is really helpful when initiating

conversations with them about how their day was,

and can help elicit a little more than a response of

“nothing” when you ask them what they learnt

about that day!

Towards the end of the year all staff will

participate in a review of our Non Negotiable

programs and models of teaching to ensure they

are consistently meeting the needs of our students

as we move towards planning for 2018.

It’s Academic Last week Kyeden, Anthony, Tulip and Jordan from

Level 5 competed in It’s Academic competition

conducted by Mordialloc College. They came 1st against

some tough competition from 7 different primary

schools. The students had to answer questions in

relation to History, Geography, Maths, general

knowledge and much more. Congratulations to our

Level 5 students and well done on their fantastic

performance!

Below are just a few of the questions from the competition:

1. In which country did the Olympics originate?

2. Who is the premier of Victoria?

3. What year did World War 1 finish?

4. Which American city is known as ‘the big apple’?

5. At what temperature does water freeze?

6. Who won Australian Survivor this year?

7. Who was Australia’s first Prime Minister?

8. What element is Au on the periodic table?

To our CHPS Families,

Our library staff are always extremely grateful when parents come in and help, whether it be

helping with borrowing or simply sorting the shelves. We also are extremely grateful when we

have books donated to our library that students no longer want kept at home. To everyone who

helps us in any way we thank you.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge one family in particular, the Ingram/

Fennel family. Some of you may remember Leigh Fennel. Leigh was Cody, Jules and Alyx Ingram’s

grandmother who always walked her grandchildren every day to and from school no matter what

the weather was like. Leigh donated many posters and books to our library and every year she

would kindly purchase books for each of her grandchildren’s classes. Sadly Leigh is no longer with

us, her husband Tery Fennel has kept up with his wife’s tradition in her memory and this year the

Fennel family have again donated brand new books to three lucky classrooms.

Cody, Jules and Alyx each got to select what their class gets to read and from what we have heard

they chose well! So we would like to publicly acknowledge the ongoing kindness that this family

has always shown our school, to Tery Fennel and the Ingram Family, thank you most sincerely.

Physical Education

Recent article from the Leader Newspaper:

ACTIVE kids from Chelsea Heights Primary are ditching the car and opting to ride, walk, skate or scoot to school.

Bicycle Network is helping by pointing out safe and direct routes with footpath stickers.

The school joined the Ride2School’s Active Paths program, which launched on October 24, to encourage more littlies and their parents to adopt healthy habits.

Physical education teacher Travis Stevenson said he was keen to see it happen.

On Thursday 19th of October Riley Gibbons competed at the SSV Southern Metropolitan Regional Track and Field Championships at Cranbourne Athletics Track Casey Fields in the 200m sprint. He finished in 1st place with a personal best (PB) time of 28.50 seconds which qualified him to compete at the State Championships.

On Monday 30th of October, Riley competed at the SSV State Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. Riley was in the second heat of the 11 Yr. Boys 200m and finished 4th in his heat with a time of 29.48 seconds. Unfortunately, Riley just missed out on reaching the final by two places but he did extremely well and should be very proud of what he has accomplished. He finished 10th overall in the State of Victoria for 11 Yr. 200m which is an amazing achievement. The whole Chelsea Heights PS community is proud of Riley and just want to once again congratulate him on a brilliant effort. Way to go Riley!!

Well done Riley Gibbons!

Walk to School Month Class 5/6 Freeman won the Class of the Month for Walk to School Month with a total of 603 active travel trip to and from school by walking, scooting or riding. Well done!

Performing Arts

What an amazing year it has been for the Performing Arts department and all of the children

involved in the productions. We have achieved great success with the quality of the production

and the performances by the children that we have already started planning 2019!

Thank you to all of the Junior School parents who took the time to respond to our survey monkey.

The results were extremely positive and re-assured us again that we are doing a great job and

the kids are learning and having fun at the same time!

This term students have been exploring the two key elements of music, beat and rhythm. It has

been fun structuring lessons to appeal to the interests of the vast ages of the children. I have

managed to squeeze in some music appreciation and history in there, showing clips from Elvis

Presley, The Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald and Guns and Roses. There has definitely been a lot of loud

singalongs and lots of laughs at the ‘old fashioned’ songs and ‘weird dancing styles’.

Speaking of laughter it’s almost time to start rehearsals for the annual Christmas Concert! That’s

right and the teachers have already started preparing for their number, it may be hard to top the

‘Men in Black’ show stopper from last year though, but we will try!! Can you believe that it is

almost Christmas, it must be the warm weather that’s tricking us! I hope all of the parents are

ready for the influx of the Christmas songs that will be coming home soon, ones that are going to

be played over and over and over again ( sorry).

Your child will shortly begin rehearsing for the concert which is held on the grass outside the

Green Zone. This year we are having a ‘Pot Luck’ theme, so there will be a real mixture of

Christmas and Celebration songs, where anything goes!

Visual Arts

Welcome to the final term in the Art Studio for 2017!

Foundation students have been exploring the

element of texture and discussing why we use it

in art. They enjoyed doing rubbings outside

looking for different textures on trees, paths,

concrete and buildings. Foundation are now

making colour choices to paint their clay fish

which they decorated with a variety of lines and

patterns.

Students in Level 1/2 have completed painting

their clay birds, making strong choices with

colour and design. They have explored how to

use line and pattern to create a variety of

different textures such as soft, fluffy, hard,

rough and spiky.

Levels 3/4 have been working on

completing an artwork consisting of three

pieces, they have created a superhero, a

background scene for their superhero and

a clay relief sculpture with their heroes

catchphrase. These three pieces will be

placed together to show a story.

problem solving skills to design and make a 3D card

guitar that uses no glue or tape to join it together. They

have done an amazing job looking at ways to create the

guitars and have included some very interesting design

choices.

Level 6 have begun working on

submitting designs for their

that their work has demonstrated a

very strong understanding on how

to use the elements of line, shape,
