PRINCIPAL PARTNER
SEASON OVERVIEW
from the Artistic Director
For over two decades West Australian Ballet
has started the year performing at the
magical Quarry Amphitheatre and this year
will be no different. Our first season in 2017
will be a program of four wonderful works
including three Australian Premieres and
one World Premiere.
The night will start with an internationally
acclaimed choreographer who is a familiar
face to our Perth audiences. The Belgian
born Annabelle Lopez Ochoa returns with
In Transit, a strong and poignant work where
Annabelle explores a person’s state of mind
while in an undefined public place of transit.
This piece was created for the Spanish
National Ballet in 2012.
Canadian born Eric Gauthier will make his
Australian debut with two works from his
bright and diverse repertoire. Ballet 101
is an entertaining solo which starts with
the so-called "101" positions of the ballet
language before randomly combining them
in a creative choreographic exercise with a
surprise finish.
Takuto is our second Eric Gauthier piece for
the evening. This performance will showcase
not only the Company’s technical skills but
also the dancers’ drumming abilities. Set
in three parts, this work is a journey with
our dancers as they find their inner balance
and energy through the powerful beat.
These two works were created on Eric’s
own Company based in Stuttgart, Germany,
Gauthier Dance.
I am excited to announce
WAB Demi-Soloist Christopher
Hill has created a piece to
conclude our Ballet at the
Quarry season. The Clearest
Light is the newest addition
to Christopher’s impressive
choreographic repertoire and
I am delighted to bring this
performance to the stage.
In May, WAB will bring
Don Quixote back to life at
His Majesty’s Theatre.
This version, created in
2010 by iconic Australian
Prima Ballerina, our very
own Lucette Aldous,
follows Don Quixote on his
journey to find his love - the
imaginary Dulcinea.
Have you ever imagined a
ballet based on the story
of The Great Gatsby?
Well, a very talented
choreographer has! After
the enormous success of
Beauty & the Beast last year,
David Nixon is back with a
delightful ballet set in the
stylish world of New York’s
Long Island in the 1920s.
The Great Gatsby will bring
the cool, calm, collected
prohibition era to Perth in
September.
In this, my fourth year as Artistic Director, I have created yet another year of excellence, beauty and the high standard our audiences have come to expect, and I invite you to follow me on this artistic adventure.
SEASON 2017Program
A tale of swashbuckling
pirates, ticking crocodiles,
enchanting mermaids and
lost boys will bring our
2017 season to a close. The
beloved children’s classic,
Peter Pan, will entrance
audiences of all ages as
Peter and the Darling
children along with the
mischievous fairy Tinkerbell
travel to Neverland and
fight the devious Hook.
Choreographed by Russell
Kerr, this production will be
a special Christmas treat.
And of course one not to
forget, Genesis, our much
loved season where you
get to enjoy cutting edge
choreography in an intimate
setting with WAB dancers
at our Ballet Centre.
I trust Season 2017 will
invigorate your senses
as you follow us on our
continuous journey of
beauty, grace and emotion.

How easy it is to get out

Gauthier inspired by the art
of Japanese drumming.

to slip, Carraway comes to see the loneliness, obsession and
tragedy that lies beneath.
Music by Academy Award nominated and BAFTA winning

BALLET
PROGRAM
SEASON 2017
WELCOME TO WEST AUSTRALIAN BALLET
Season 2017
As Patron of West Australian Ballet it brings me great joy to
see such excellence from our State Ballet Company. Since its
beginning in 1952, WAB has continued to astound audiences
around Western Australia with classical and contemporary
productions alike.
Once again Artistic Director Aurélien Scannella is delivering a
program filled with universal appeal for those die hard ballet
lovers attending their 100th performance to curious first time
theatre-goers eager to experience the pure joy ballet brings.
Season 2017 launches in February with dynamic and
contemporary works being performed at the ever popular
Ballet at the Quarry. No doubt audiences will be delighted to
see the return of the luxuriant Don Quixote in May and Peter
Pan will provide a fantasy filled adventure for the young and
young at heart at the end of year. Last performed by WAB in
2010 and 2013 respectively, these well-known productions will
continue to captivate all.
The headiness of New York in the 1920s comes to His
Majesty’s Theatre in September with the Australian Premiere
of The Great Gatsby. David Nixon is sure to evoke the senses
with what has been described as one of the most stylish
adaptations of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic.
Please join me in showing your support of Aurélien and the
Company in Season 2017.
Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC
Governor of Western Australia Patron, West Australian Ballet
Looking ahead to 2017 I am encouraged by the successes
of 2016. It gave me great pleasure to witness such an
exceptional year. The Company’s stature grew through
many exciting initiatives, the highlight being an acclaimed
international tour to Jakarta. We shall continue to strive
for such growth so we can keep enriching people’s lives
through this wonderful, timeless art form even more.
2017 will surely delight and wow audiences of all ages
with beloved ballets to new innovative creations from
World Premieres (Genesis, The Clearest Light), Australian
Premieres (The Great Gatsby, In Transit, Ballet 101, Takuto)
and beloved favourites once again returned to stage
(Don Quixote, Peter Pan).
Of course these seasons would not be possible without
the tremendous support of our audiences. Our dancers
thrive knowing you’re there every night behind the lights,
encouraging them through every jéte and pirouette.
We thank our Principal Partner, Woodside, for their
continued support. In 2016, they stood next to us through
each season and generously gave additional support for
the Jakarta tour. We also welcome Singapore Airlines as
a new Lead Partner who will stand alongside our other
faithful Lead Partner, Wesfarmers. All our Partners, from
Woodside through to our Event Partners, will continue
to play a vital role in bringing these wonderful ballet
productions to the stage in the year to come, and beyond.
I look forward to warmly welcoming you to each
production in Season 2017.
Dr Robert Edwardes
Chair, West Australian Ballet
On behalf of Woodside, I welcome and invite you to
experience West Australian Ballet’s adventurous
2017 Season.
Now in our eighth year as Principal Partner, Woodside
is pleased to be supporting West Australian Ballet to
reach greater, more diverse audiences across the state.
Both of our companies have a long association with the
WA community, and a relationship built around shared
values and shared success.
As a proud Australian company, headquartered in Perth,
it is pleasing to see the depth of local talent from within
West Australian Ballet continue to grow. In 2016, in
addition to our Principal Partnership, we also supported
West Australian Ballet’s tour to Jakarta, Indonesia,
which showcased the talents of our West Australian
performers on the international stage, and allowed the
Company to share its technical and artistic skills via a
cultural exchange with the Ballet Indonesia Foundation.
On behalf of Woodside, I encourage you to join us in
supporting Season 2017, and we wish Aurélien and all
of the Company the best in presenting this exciting
program of events.

SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Industry Partners
A big thank you goes to the team at
West Australian Ballet who have excitedly
followed the journey so far for Season 2017.
A special thank you must also go to the team
at The Mad Empire, led by Penny Tassone who,
with their tireless effort, exceptional passion
and creative genius have helped bring our
vision for 2017 to life.
The talented Robert Johnson must also be
thanked for capturing the movement and magic
of our dancers through his lens as must Abbott
& Co Printers for their expert printing services
in producing not only this brochure, but all our
print material.
And of course thank you to the dancers of West
Australian Ballet who inspire us all, everyday.

Great for getting the kids excited about the show
to follow, Storytime Sundays will be held an
hour before selected matinees during our Peter
Pan season. All children are welcome to join our
Storytelller in the Dress Circle level to hear the
classic tale before seeing it come to life on stage.
Bookings not required but seating space
