Bike Safety
Bike Rodeo
At our Bike Ro-
deo this morn-
ing, we had our
gr. 6 leadership
students and
parent volun-
teers help our
gr. 2—5 students wheel through the course demon-
strating their proper hand signals, and how to walk
safety at crosswalks. The students with helmets
had them properly fitted, and each bike was in-
spected by Kelowna Cycle. Each gr. 2—5 student
will receive a “Cycle Sense: Passport to Safety”
pamphlet that can be signed by you. Remember,
it's the law that helmets must be worn when riding
a bicycle. To ensure that bikes are safe, please
lock them securely to the bike racks, located at
the front of the school. Riding a bike is like driving a
car. Safe “driving” rules should be learned and fol-
lowed when riding a bike.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Bankhead’s
Carnival is May 10th!

Parent Apple Bowl Volunteers
It is that time of year again and we are looking for
parent volunteers for our annual Apple Bowl Track &
Field Day. If you would like to join our gr. 4—6 stu-
dents on our Apple Bowl Track & Field trip as a volun-
teer, we could put you to good use. Each ‘Field’ sta-
tion needs helpers & so do the ‘Track’ events. For ex-
ample: timers, starters, lane officials, etc. If you can
help please contact the school & leave your contact
info with Mrs. Nanci. The Apple
Bowl Track Meet takes place on
Tuesday, May 21st . Note to vol-
unteers: If you have not already
done so, please complete a
criminal record check form prior
to volunteering (no charge). The
forms are available at the
school office between 8:00 a.m.
and 3:00 p.m. daily.
Official Motto: ‘Higher * Faster * Stronger’
It’s time to review some important
school rules with students. Parents,
please take a few minutes at home, to
discuss the following rules with your chil-
dren: All after school play dates must be ar-
ranged at home, prior to coming to
school. The school phone is not to be
used for making social arrangements.
Gum chewing is not permitted at
school. Please keep this treat for home
time.
If you’ve requested that your child be
dismissed early from school, please be
prepared to come into the school of-
fice to pick up your child, so they are
not alone outside, unsupervised. Supervision ends at 2:45 pm.
Students are not permitted to use cell
phones at school
Next Year’s Plans
If you know that you will be leaving BHE, and
will not be returning in September, please let the
office know as this helps us plan for classrooms
next year.
Parents occasionally wish to make special re-
quests for their child’s classroom placement. If
you wish to make a specific placement request
for your son/daughter, please forward this to
Mrs. Williams in writing by May 31, 2013. As you
prepare your request, please keep in mind that
requests must be related to your child’s specific
learning needs and style. Please understand
that due to the many placement factors and
the allowable class size and class composition
guidelines we may not be able to accommo-
date your request.
Closed Campus
A reminder to parents that for
student’s protection all stu-
dents not going home for
lunch MUST remain on school
property during the lunch
break. Students going home
for lunch must have written
authorization signed by the
parent/guardian. And, all visi-
tors must report to the office.
We are a ’closed’ campus
during our school day.

School Dress Code: Our school dress code is in place to pro-
mote student comfort and learning. Warm weather and winter
growth spurts have brought out the spring clothes, so it is great time
for a reminder of the school dress code. Students are expected to
be neatly and appropriately dressed for school. Students are re-
minded that school is a student- and teacher-workplace. Clothing
needs to be appropriate so as not to distract or be offensive to
others. Proper clothing does not include beachwear, bare midriffs
or backs, or clothes that reveal undergarments. Short tops, muscle
shirts, short shorts and short skirts will not be allowed. Tops with spa-
ghetti straps are appropriate, provided there is a t-shirt under-
neath. Clothing should not convey any negative messages or any
reference to tobacco, drugs or alcohol. Flip flops are not a good
choice on our school field. Your appearance reflects your good judgment and your respect for
yourself and others. And, students require appropriate footwear to play outside and for physical
education – crocs, skater shoes, and sandals are not adequate support and often lead to ankle
and food injuries. Thank you for your support in helping to keep all our students safe.

SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION FOR 2013-2014
The Transportation Department is finalizing the lists of
eligible riders for school bus transportation in September 2013.
Step 1: (application for transportation services). All non-transitioning students who were issued bus
passes during the 2012-2013 school year should have received confirmation of seat assignment. (If
so, move to Step 2; if not please apply on line immediately) Before June 30th, the transportation
office will attempt to confirm online applications received for students who are eligible riders. Par-
ents and guardians of eligible students will receive confirmation by e-mail, phone, or letter.
Step 2: Parents of riders who receive confirmation of seat assignment must make arrangements for
the $112.00 Student Transportation Charge online, or at their local school prior to June 30th to guar-
antee a seat in September. In cases of financial hardship, application for subsidy shall be through
your school Principal. (After June 30th, seats not confirmed through arrangements made for the Stu-
dent Transportation Charge are released and re-assigned to courtesy riders.)
All confirmed riders who have made arrangements for the $112 Student Transportation Charge
should refer to the Transportation Website after August 30th, where you will find the most current in-
formation as well as bus stop locations and estimated pick-up and drop-off times. Bus passes will
also be distributed through your local school starting August 27th. Local schools will also have bus
stop locations posted for riders with passes.
Please note that seats for courtesy riders may not be confirmed until all
eligible riders have been accommodated in September. Parents may
need to make other arrangements for the transportation of their chil-
dren beginning on Sept. 3th until the number of courtesy seats can be
confirmed, seats assigned, the Student Transportation Charge ac-
counted for, and bus passes printed and distributed. Students must be
registered riders with bus passes to ride a school bus.
For more information about school bus transportation, please visit our website at http://www.sd23.bc.ca/ProgramsServices/SchoolBus/Pages/default.aspx
NOTE: Early registration and payment of at least
the 1st installment of the Student Transportation
charge by June 30th will result in a discount of at
least $12 per child.
