Principal’s News
Welcome Back!
Welcome back to all our students,
staff and families to what is looking
like a great 2019. I would also like to
welcome our new families and all of
our new Preps who have been
enjoying their first weeks of
schooling.
I have been very impressed with the smooth start to the
year and how quickly the students have settled back
into the routine of school. It has been great seeing the
classes walk around the school making sure it is clear
what happens in the different settings at One Mile and
the expectations the students need to show.
First Term this year is 10 weeks with the last day of
Term Friday the 5th of April.
School Parking and Pick Up When using the pick up area please note that it is not an area to park and wait for your child. We have installed more stopping signs to make this clear as cars are backing up around the corner into McLeod Lane. This presents a hazard for cars parked in designated carparks outside of Prep W. If you are early to pick up your child please use the large carpark as parking in the designated pickup area is a no stopping zone. I have included below explanations of the signs that are down in the parking area.
No Stopping - A driver must not stop on a length of road where a No Stopping Sign applies (typically accompanied with Yellow line marking) No Parking (Set Down Area) - A driver must not stop on a length of road where a No Parking Sign applies unless to drop off or pick up passengers, and does not leave the vehicle unattended. The maximum time limit to stop in a No Parking Zone is 2 Minutes.
If you are parked in the large carpark and come into the school grounds to collect your child can you please use the designated crossing and not cross in between cars in the pick up zone. Pink Stumps Day
Pink Stumps Day is Tomorrow the 8th of February and I look forward to seeing a lot of pink as we raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. It will be a great staff verse
students cricket game after second break (I hear the staff have been in training all holidays).
Every day counts at school
The importance of a team effort in achieving school attendance is the main theme in The adventures of Jimmy and Sam the Dog animation and comic book series, developed by the Department of Education. NRL star Sam Thaiday plays Sam the Dog, with a cameo appearance by Johnathan Thurston, plus former Queensland Firebirds netballer Beryl Friday. Research shows that school attendance leads to positive student outcomes, and can help children to build social and emotional skills. Head to the Every day counts website.
Mr Stuart Bell
From the Deputy’s Desk Welcome back for 2019. What an awesome start to the year we have had!
PBL Last week all classes participated in our Expectation Walks again. This involved each class moving around the school and being presented with the expectations for that area by the relevant adult. This included eating areas, playground, toilets, school crossings, tuckshop, library, before school area, bus/pickup & office. We will be sending home a copy of our Behaviour Matrix, so please discuss this with your child and ask them what they know about our School Rules (Learners Are Respectful, Safe - LARS) and the Expectations. If you have any feedback/questions/concerns please come and see any member of the PBL team including our parent rep, Dee Dodds. Our Expectation for this fortnight is I show pride in myself and my school.
Behaviour Levels Students in Year 4-6 will be asked to confirm their current behaviour level in Week 4. This will also mark
School News 7th February 2019
the first opportunity for our Year 1-3 students to be nominated for Silver Behaviour Level. War on Waste It has been wonderful to see so much ‘nude food’. Unfortunately, along with that comes a growing pile of un-named containers. Please name all items so we can return them, and if you are missing anything, check the old shed near Admin, as this is where all the lost property is taken.
Attendance Every Day Counts! Our Bulls-eye-bonus activities will again occur in the last week of each term to acknowledge students meeting our attendance target (and having no RTC referrals). It was great seeing so many students achieving the target. This assisted us to have the 2
nd highest attendance in the Gympie region,
so well done everyone!

Student Absences Recording your child’s absence is an important task
when your child is away. We have a student absence
line for your convenience.
Please Call 07-5480-2760
Note:- Student absences of more than 10 days
duration require an approved student exemption form.
Please see the office.
PE News – Mr Martin
Gympie District Sport If your child is turning 10 or older this year they are eligible to play for Gympie District in a variety of sports. Should
they wish to try out for Rugby League (girls, boys U12 or boys U11), Australian Rules, Softball, Touch, Basketball, Soccer, Netball, Hockey, Tennis or Cricket please complete the paper work available at the office if your child has not already received it. Please note that for most sports they should have considerable experience playing this sport before trying out. Importantly Australian Rules and Softball nominations need to be returned to the office by this Friday, February 8. Any students who play golf or participate in club swimming should see Mr Martin to nominate in these sports. One Mile Netball One Mile School has had netball teams play in our local club competitions in recent years but not 2018. We have a core of enthusiastic girls and boys wanting to play but will need a few more players to round out teams. Thanks to Mirinda Grosse who has volunteered to coach a netball team. If we do have more than one
team we will require more parent volunteers to assist with subs, training etc. If you are interested in helping to run these teams please let me know. Athletics & Cross Country There will be a change to our athletics selection this year. The District Carnival will be held Wednesday-Thursday May 22 and 23 in week 5 term 2 which is much earlier than usual (the Nationals are in Darwin and to avoid the heat are being held in August). We have decided to keep our school carnival in June (date to be confirmed) but to hold a selection half day event in week 9, Friday March 29 for 10 – 12 year olds only. Only the highest qualifying students will compete. Cross Country will be held in week 10, Tuesday April 2. Swimming Just a reminder that Preps begin swimming next week and so does our before & after school and lunchtime Sporting Schools Swimming. Permission/information notes are available at the office.
