Principal Report:
Athletics Day
Athletics Day has been postponed to Friday 2nd August as it was too difficult to find a date in Term 2 that
suited all 5 schools. The parent helper list will be re-emailed out. Please let Belinda know ASAP if there is
a specific age group you are able to help with before it goes to the other schools. We will still require BBQ
helpers, and people to measure discuss and coits. Thankyou in advance!
Pomonal Speed Initiative –Project
It was discussed at the speed initiative meeting with various stake holders,
that the following works will be completed at the front of the school by mid
August (see timeline below).
-red and white post sculptures -Gravelled area -green space
-Children sculptures -seating areas
The budget does not allow for the works across the road to occur, including
the footpath to the store and there will not be a zebra crossing as shown in
the concept plan. Further grants will be sought to try and cover as much of the concept plan as possible.
Naplan
The Year 5 students completed their written Naplan on ipads today whilst the Year 3 students completed
their tests on paper. Unfortunately the Naplan Test server crashed a number of times. Students were very
patient and additional time was issued to ensure they were able to complete their tests. Principals re-
ceived notification that the remainder of the test can be completed via the back-up paper copy should
further technical difficulties be encountered.

Newsletter
Pomonal Primary School should be a place of learning where everyone in the school feels
a sense of belonging. Where respect, responsibility and persistence are our key values.
Book Weeks (Wednesday 15th—Wednesday 22nd May)
We have a great display of books for all ages for sale in the Office. Students are welcome to browse the
books with parents before and after school. Families and Community members are welcome to view the
books on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the day.
Lake Fyans Kayak Fishing Competition
Competitors from Pomonal, Stawell, Warracknabeal, Geelong and Ballarat braved the chilli weather con-
ditions to try their luck at catching Redfin. It was great to see so many kids enter the completion, with a
total of 14 Juniors and 17 Seniors. The lake was a beautiful sight, especially on Saturday where the only
ripple seen was that from a kayak paddle. The Stawell and District Angling Club were very kind to offer the
use of their facilities, with a number of visitors choosing to camp at the lake for the weekend. They kept
everyone warm with a large toasty fire and very kindly allowed the school to use their BBQ and kitchen
facilities for the school fundraiser. Neale Dowsett, event organiser, did a tremendous job gathering spon-
sorship, event prizes and raffle prizes.
Pomonal Primary School would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous support and
donations:

appreciated by the students of Pomonal Primary School and will go towards upgrading some much
needed sporting equipment to keep our students busy and active. A huge thankyou to all the families who
attended and assisted with the event!
Mothers Day Afternoon Tea
With the cancellation of the Athletics Carnival, it allowed for a last minute invite to our wonderful
mothers and grandmothers to come to the school for some afternoon tea and pampering. Students
worked in groups to independently cook rumballs, chocolate cupcakes and hedgehog. Students served
their mothers and grandmothers afternoon tea and even made them a cuppa’ (with the help of the Senior
Students). The visitors were then asked to sit in a row and the students gave them a shoulder massage.
Thankyou to all the families that were able to attend at such short notice. The students really enjoyed
cooking for, serving and massaging our visitors! (The students should now all know how to make their
mums a cup of tea/ coffee by now –an important life skill!!!!)
April Award Winners
It was wonderful to see so many parents supporting
the achievements of our students by attending our
Monthly Award Ceremony.
A big congratulations goes to our April award winners
for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility and Persis-
tence: Eric (Absent in picture), Kiki, Izzy, Hannah,
Daisy, Quinn, Cole and James.
Surprise Visitors
We were out and about working on our own composts when out of no-where some garden
celebrities arrived and greeted us at our school! -’Costa the Garden Gnome’ and ‘Captain
Compost’. WHAT A GREAT SURPRISE!
Costa and Captain Compost moved about to all the groups offering hints and : eg. how to
improve the location, how much moisture a good compost requires, why you shouldn’t put
grass with roots into your compost.
Costa also talked to the students about the importance of measuring our sustainable
impact. He suggested we weigh all the food scraps and materials we add to our compost
(that normally would have gone into the rubbish bin and end up as landfill) so we can tell
people just how much of an impact our little school is having on our community!
From little
things… big
things grow...
Students will happily accept food scraps and garden waste from all
community members, to turn into compost!
Our next gardening day is Monday 27th May –We will even have our own
film crew at the school –so please bring some compost and join in on the fun!

Reports Issued
Education is a 3-way partnership between the child, the teacher and the family.
You can help your child significantly improve their education by:
encouraging your child to read for at least 10mins/ day
Practising their spelling words daily
Supporting your child to learn their times tables –this sets them up with
good life-long skills and enables them to solve complex maths problems
easier.
The school pays an annual subscription for the spelling and maths program
that has learning games that children can play from home.
