TRUDEAU’S MISSION STATEMENT

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary, a neighbourhood school, focuses on the uniqueness of each child and fosters a supportive learning environment that nurtures all children to become responsible and productive citizens.

We believe that we are in a partnership with families and that parent, child, and school; all play a role in the development of children as responsible members of society.

Grade 7 Transition to High School Transition to high school is just around the corner for grade 7 students. If your child will be applying for Mini School, please refer to the VSB website for all up-to-date deadlines and information sessions at www.vsb.bc.ca/programs/mini-school-registration.

All 18 secondary schools in Vancouver offer challenging and comprehensive programs. Many schools have developed their own school-based enrichment programs for a wide range of student interests and abilities. In addition to the neighbourhood school, District programs also offer a set of enrich-ment programs to meet the needs of students.

To apply for most District programs, students must complete the District Cognitive Skills test on November 20, 2018

Important Dates:

• Register online for the test: October 26 to November 8, 2018

• Test date and time: November 20 at 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., 2018 (Students with a designated Special Need and IEP may choose to register to take the test at 9 a.m. at VSB Education Centre)

• Application to programs deadline: December 20, 2018 by 3 p.m.

With the opening of school registration for the 2019-20 school year on November 1st, the VSB will be implementing a new online registration service for parents. The registration process will have two steps:

Step 1: Complete the online registration process at vsbapplynow.vsb.bc.ca Print out the completed registration form.

Step 2: Bring the completed registration form along with the required documents to your catchment school.

NOTE: The registration process is not complete until you have completed both steps in the process. Visit the Student Registration Page on the Vancouver School Board website for more information.

Please support us in having children leave any toy weapons associated with their costume at home on Halloween (pirate

swords, guns, etc.).

Thank You!

We would like to acknowledge that we live, work, and play on the traditional lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil Waututh Coast Salish People.

BEING PUNCTUAL TO SCHOOL IS IMPORTANT!

The effect of the school day starts at 9:00 a.m. Please arrive at 8:55 a.m. so that your child does not miss out on important daily routines. Arriving late to school on a consistent basis can have longer-term negative academic effects. If showing up late to school becomes a habit, students may develop the notion that tardiness is acceptable behaviour.

As parents we can set them up for success in their future when they will need to arrive at work on time by ensuring your child is at school on time

on a regular basis.

Throughout the school year, we will have numerous emergency situation practices (fire, earthquake, hold and secure, shelter in place, and lockdown). For your information, if you arrive at the school and a sign is on the door that states “Hold and Secure”, essentially, it means that there is an incident occurring in the neighborhood that is deemed a risk to the school. We lock the exterior doors to the building and do not allow students or staff to leave the

building until the risk has passed. This may be something such as a police incident in the area. We also have a procedure known as “Shelter in Place”. This is when the school is locked for an environmental concern such as a chemical spill or something more simple such as a pack of coyotes on the playground. If you arrive at the school and the exterior doors are locked please follow the instructions on the sign on the door. Finally, a full “Lockdown” would be initiated in the unlikely event of a threat occurring directly on the school grounds or in the buildings. In this event, there is no sign on the door—all staff and students would be secured behind locked doors until police deem it to be safe to leave the school.

In case of an emergency where we are unable to keep students at Trudeau Elementary, parents should be aware that our offsite emergency evacuation centre is Moberly Elementary at 1000 East 59th Avenue, Vancouver. For more information about school emergency procedures, please talk to your child’s teacher. It may also be helpful for you to talk to your children after these practices to reassure them that they are done to prepare them and make them feel safer and better prepared for emergencies in their school.

Please be aware that we are an “allergy and scent aware” school. What this means is that we have a number of children and/or staff in the school that do have life-threatening allergies to certain foods

(peanuts, seafood/fish, tree nuts, scents). People with a severe food allergy must not eat even tiny amounts of the food that cause them to have an allergic reaction. A severe allergic reaction can come on quickly and this can even occur if the person is simply in the same room as the allergen. A child or adult with a food allergy and their family are responsible for staying safe but need help from other children, adults and teachers to help reduce the risk of an accidental exposure. Although we do not state that we are a school free of these food items, it would be helpful to us if your child packs a lunch and/or snack, that you please consider sending snacks without peanuts, seafood/fish, or tree nuts. Also, please remind children not to share food, drinks, or eating utensils with others.

Thank You!

• Wear make-up instead of a mask; you will be better able to see.

• Always wear reflective tape on your costume and/or something bright so drivers will be able to see you.

• Be careful if you wear high heels or have a long costume. You might trip - runners are safer.

• Always go trick or treating with your parents, a friend or a group.

• Always stay in your neighborhood and start trick or treating early–and get home early.

• Watch for traffic and cross the road at the corner or crosswalk. Look both ways before crossing the street.

• Never eat un-wrapped candy, let your parents check your treats before you eat them.

PAC UPDATE

The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) invites you to attend the next PAC meeting of the year on

Wednesday, November 7th

at 9:15 a.m in the library.

We would like to thank in advance all those parents who have or will volunteer in the school and/or in various roles in classrooms this year. Your support of the school is very much appreciated.

We look forward to

seeing you there!

Cross Country Team

Our Cross Country Running Team have practiced their running on Tuesday and Thursday mornings since school started in September. To celebrate their hard work, the 20 runners attended the Vancouver Elementary District Cross Country Meet at Trout Lake. It was a beautiful sunny day and everyone did very well in their races. A special thanks to our parent drivers and to Mr. Swain and Mrs. Forsyth for coaching the students. Way to run Tigers!

Soccer

Trudeau Elementary Sr. Girls and Boys Soccer teams had a successful soccer season. Games were played at Trudeau, Sexsmith and Moberly. Sunny weather and awesome sportsmanship. Many thanks to Bal and Mrs. Forsyth for coaching the teams this year. Thanks again to our parent drivers!

Trudeau Walkathon

On Thursday November 22 , 2018. Trudeau students will be participating in our 5km Walkathon through our beautiful Trudeau neighbourhood. Information and pledge envelopes went home this past week and the students have already started collecting pledges. All money raised from the Walkathon will stay at Trudeau to support all the great school

programs. Students can collect pledges from family and friends. The school does not encourage door to door collections and advise students to only call on neighbours they know well, with parents/caregivers permission. Families are welcome to join us on November 22 at 1:30 pm for our big 5km walk—Rain or Shine!

Donations over $20 may receive a receipt from the Vancouver School Board. Please make sure your information of the pledge form is clear and complete.

Please collect pledges and return money envelopes with pledge forms on Nov. 22, 2018 . For their fundraising efforts, all students will have their name entered in prize draws at school!

A big thank you to all those who helped us during the book fair! We are very fortunate to have such wonderful helpers and volunteers. That is what makes our Book Fair such a great

success!

Our library hours are:

8:30-9:00 AM and 3:00-3:30 PM. Drop by before or after school and let us help you find the book you're looking for.

The weather is still beautiful and that means that many children are riding their bikes to school. It is clear, however, that many children are not wearing helmets while riding.

Please be reminded that any accident can be tragic if a cyclist is not wearing a helmet.

RIDE SAFE!

We are pleased to announce that Trudeau now has a permanent Librarian.

Please join us in welcoming Pamela Lowe to our school. She starts Monday, October 29th. Ms. Lowe will be the teacher librarian and also the resource teacher for Divisions 1,2, and 3.
