for those that don’t know…what is PRINCE2 and what’s changed?PRINCE2 is a premier method for project management and is a trusted approach for delivering projects successfully.

The new edition of Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 was published by AXELOS in June 2017.

what’s changed in the new edition? The 2017 update is the first since 2009. It places emphasis on the flexibility and scalability of the method and how to best tailor it to the specific complexities and requirements of projects.

Key updates include:

• Increased emphasis on tailoring PRINCE2 to meet the varied range of needs of organisations and their project environments

• A greater link between the PRINCE2 principles and themes

• Updates to the ‘Themes’ chapters to illustrate typical examples of tailoring

• Increased guidance on the practical application of PRINCE2, with many examples and tips

• Refinements to the structure and format to ensure it’s easier to use than ever before

what hasn’t changed in the new edition? The PRINCE2 structure of seven principles, themes and processes, has remained constant.

Plus, there will be no 2017 Re-registration exam available. So you will need to sit the full 150 minute Practitioner exam to get re-registered.

when will the 2009 exams be withdrawn?Until January 1st 2018, it is possible to take either the 2009 or the 2017 version. After this date the 2009 Practitioner and Re-registration exams will be retired and only the 2017 exams will be available. It will still be possible to take the 2009 version of the exams not in English until AXELOS states otherwise.

how have the exams changed?Axelos have used the new 2017 edition as an opportunity to change the way that PRINCE2 is examined. In summary:

Foundation: Not much change. It is still one hour of multiple choice questions. The number of questions has changed to 60, down from 75 and the pass mark has gone up by 5% to 55%. The Foundation exam also now uses less negative questioning as an approach. This is in response to feedback that, despite putting the word in bold and in capitals, people still manage to miss out the ‘NOT’ in the stress of exam conditions.

Practitioner: Remains multiple choice and 150 minutes with a pass mark of 55%. In the case of Practitioner, much has changed though. Firstly, there are only 2 pages of text in the scenario booklet for the 2017 Practitioner exam. Secondly, instead of 80 questions covering 8 of the 10 syllabus areas, you now get examined on the entire methodology. There are also now only 68 questions, giving candidates more time on each one. Next, the questions are more focussed on how to apply PRINCE2 to the scenario, rather than being overly theoretical. Finally, Axelos have removed the ‘assertion/reason’ and ‘multiple response’ questions.

what do you do if you are currently PRINCE2 qualified, but you are due to take your re registration exam? For those of you who are PRINCE2 Registered Practitioners with a certificate that is about to expire in less than a year may well want to get recertified now using the 2009 exams and benefit from being registered for up to another five years. If so, don’t leave it too long as the re-registration exam is only valid until the end of 2017. If you choose to take the exam (and pass it) then you will remain PRINCE2 qualified for 3- 5 years after you take the exam. After this 3-5 year period, there is no option for you to re-register, but you will be able to take the new PRINCE2 2017 practitioner exam, to convert to the latest version of PRINCE2.

Please refer to Fig1 overleaf.

Now PRINCE2 2017 has been launched many existing and aspiring practitioners may be unsure about how this change affects them. Here is a quick guide for you...

what do you do if you currently hold PRINCE2 Foundation but want to convert to a PRINCE2 Practitioner? There are no changes to the Foundation status with the 2017 update. When you pass this exam you are PRINCE2 Foundation qualified for life. When you are ready to convert, if this is in the remaining months of 2017 you can either choose to take the 2017 practitioner exam or the 2009 practitioner exam. If you choose the 2009 exam the above details will apply and your registration will last for another 3-5 years. If you choose the 2017 exam you will need to remain current as a practitioner. The options for this are detailed below.

You can also gain the PRINCE2 Practitioner Qualification if you hold one of the following qualifications:

Project Management Professional (PMI PMP)

Certified Associate in Project Management (PMI CAPM)

Association for Project Management qualifications

IPMA Level A® (Certified Projects Director)

IPMA Level B® (Certified Senior Project Manager)

IPMA Level C® (Certified Project Manager)

IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)

Please see the PRINCE2 certification pages on AXELOS.com for further information. Also see Fig2 for diagram.

how do you stay current with PRINCE2 2017?With the new PRINCE2 status you are current for only 3 years rather than 5 years. Your options to remain current after this time are:

1. Take another practitioner exam after 3 years

2. Become an AXELOS PRINCE2 member within 3 months of getting your Practitioner qualification (which is now FREE for 1 year to those that take the new practitioner exam). Then keep this up to date, earning 20 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points each year, in the prescribed categories, which equals 60 CPD points over a three year period. This way you do not need to take another PRINCE2 Practitioner exam again as this will keep your status current.

what counts as CPD?The CPD points can come from a combination of professional experience, training, community participation and self-study. You can find out more in the membership handbook on the Axelos website.

what if I have a few more years left on your Practitioner certificate? You can just wait until it is about to expire before you re-register. You are still a PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner until it expires. You will have to sit the full Practitioner exam eventually to continue to be registered, but you can then decide whether to re-take the exam in the future or opt for the CPD route for re-registration.

so what if you are not yet a PRINCE2 Registered Practitioner - should you go for 2009 or 2017?That is up to you and probably depends on whether you would prefer your registration to last longer, or if you’d prefer to be trained and registered against the updated method (using the slightly easier examination approach)? Go for 2009 if you have 2009 Foundation already, as you won’t need to buy a new text book and you get the qualification registered for longer.

It could be worth considering the 2017 version if you are contemplating a career move. Potential employers may view a candidate who is a PRINCE2 2017 Registered Practitioner as more up-to-date than a candidate who is a PRINCE2 2009 Registered Practitioner.
