ESTAR PREPARADO Debes estar preparado. Es así de simple. Al comenzar este tiempo de Adviento, el Señor Jesús nos llama a estar preparados para su venida. En esta época del año, gran parte de nuestra atención se centra en estar preparados para los detalles que acompañan las fiestas. Compramos regalos; decoramos nuestro hogar por fuera y por dentro; preparamos comidas especiales para esta época; escribimos y enviamos tarjetas de Navidad; asistimos a conciertos navideños; nos preparamos para recibir a los familiares y amigos en nuestro hogar o para visitarlos en sus hogares. No podemos ignorar los detalles que forman parte de este tiempo. Quizás este Adviento sea un tiempo para prestar atención a todos esos detalles con un enfoque diferente. Mientras nos preparamos para celebrar la fiesta de Navidad, ¿qué tal si reconocemos plenamente la presencia del Señor mientras realizamos estas tareas? El Señor muchas veces viene a nosotros de formas maravillosamente sorprendentes. Estemos preparados.

BE PREPARED Be prepared. It’s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can’t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared.

First Sunday of Advent ~ Do What You Can The reading from the prophet Isaiah this Sunday contains a remarkable prediction—the end of war between nations (Isaiah 2:4). So why hasn’t it been fulfilled? We can look to the second reading and the Gospel for some hints. Both readings talk about being awake and ready for our salvation (Romans 13:12) or the coming of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:39). Being awake doesn’t mean consuming lots of coffee or turning the music volume all the way up. Paul calls it “putting on the Lord Jesus Christ” as a soldier would put on armor before a battle. He even mentions rivalry and jealousy as attitudes to avoid. What if we not only avoided them, but also taught our children to avoid them? What if everyone eventually learned not to be jealous and hateful? We are a long way from ending all wars. There are still people who teach hate to the poor instead of helping to feed them. There are still people who get rich selling the weapons of war. This brings us back to the first reading, in which Isaiah speaks of beating swords into plowshares. Instead of trying to stop all wars, could we at least show forgiveness to someone who has hurt us? Maybe we need to be ready to share our faith. Maybe we have to be awake to any opportunity to show God’s love to those around us. If we can just be patient with other people’s faults and weaknesses, we may not stop all wars, but we will be prepared for the coming of the Prince of Peace.

THE LIGHT OF THE LORD

What a relief it would be if we had time to ponder the miracle of God-with-us . In our troubled world, we very much need to pray for peace. “They shal l beat their swords into plowshares / and their spears into pruning hooks; / one nation shall not raise the sword against another, / nor shall they train for war again” (Isaiah 2:4). If only we could make it so by wishing, but Jesus has said that if we ask for anything in his name, it will be granted. Perhaps we can find time for even a small prayer for our war-torn, weary world. “O house of Jacob, come, / let us walk in the light of the L !” (Isaiah 2:5).

LA LUZ DEL MUNDO Que gran alivio sería si tuviéramos el tiempo para pensar en el milagro de Dios-con-nosotros. En nuestro mundo atormentado, necesitamos mucha oración por la paz. “Ellos convertirán sus espadas en azadones / y sus lanzas en guadañas; / una nación no levantará su espada contra otra, / no se entrenarán para la guerra” (Isaías 2:4). Si tan solo se cumpliera con nuestro deseo, pero Jesús dijo que cualquier cosas que pidiéramos en su nombre, lo recibiríamos. Quizá podemos dedicar un tiempo aún para una oración corta para nuestro mundo cansado y desgarrado por la guerra. “¡Oh casa de Jacob, ven, / permítenos caminar a la luz del Señor! (Isaías 2:5).

First Sunday of Advent Here we are again, beginning a new church year, and looking ahead to Christmas. We have been through a long period of Ordinary Time, wi th several secular hol idays: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. We celebrated all of these, and now it is time to prepare for the great feast of Christmas. As Christians, we are not preparing only to celebrate the secular Christmas that has crept into our year for the last hundred years or more. We are celebrating the coming of Christ, both into our world at the Nativity and again at the end of time. It is time to awaken from our sleepy ordinary time and await the coming of Christ.
