Prince Edward Island Command
This is a very eventful year for The Royal Canadian Legion. We have marked the End of an Era with thepassing of our last known Veteran of World War I. We have also celebrated the 65th Anniversary of VEDay and the 100th Anniversary of our Navy.
To the many Canadians who so willingly went to war and sacrificed their lives and the Veterans who werefortunate to return, we can never thank you enough. We also thank our Peacetime service men andwomen who have served, and are still serving, around the world so we can enjoy the life we enjoy today.I also wish to thank all those who have participated in the making of this booklet to commemorate someof our Veterans who have served us so willingly.
On behalf of the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island Command, The Royal Canadian Legion, Iwish to express my gratitude to all of those who have made our commemorative booklet a success.Revenues from the production of this booklet will ensure that Prince Edward Island Command can carryon with serving our Veterans, Seniors and Youth programs into the future.

Capt. Frederick Thornton PetersOran, North AfricaNovember 8, 1942Royal Navy
Frederick Thornton Peters was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on the 17th of September 1889, sonof the Attorney General and the first Liberal Premier of that province. He was educated at St. Peter’s PrivateSchool, later went to school in Victoria, British Columbia, and from there to Naval School in England. He graduatedas a midshipman and three years later he received his commission as a sub-lieutenant. During the First World Warhe was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order, the first ever given to a Canadian, and the DistinguishedService Cross for gallantry in action. Following the action which won him the Victoria Cross, he was proceeding toEngland when the plane he was in crashed and he was killed. He has no known grave but his name appears onthe Naval Memorial at Portsmouth, England.
Citation
“Captain Peters was in the ‘suicide charge’ by two little cutters at Oran. Walney and Hartland were two ex-Americancoastguard cutters which were lost in a gallant attempt to force the boom defences in the harbour of Oran duringthe landings on the North African coast. Captain Peters led his force through the boom in the face of point-blankfire from shore batteries, destroyer and a cruiser - a feat which was described as one of the great episodes of navalhistory. The Walney reached the jetty disabled and ablaze, and went down with her colours flying. Blinded in oneeye, Captain Peters was the only survivor of the seventeen men on the bridge of the Walney. He was takenprisoner but was later released when Oran was captured. On being liberated from the gaol, he was carried throughthe streets where the citizens hailed him with flowers. He won the D.S.O. and D.S.C. in the last war. He was bornin 1889.”
