Happy New Year parents, students and friends of Ka- wananakoa Middle School! I wish you all good health, prosperity, and happiness in 2018. Welcome back, students, to the start of a new semester and congratula- tions to all who have successfully demonstrated their com- mitment to learning as evidenced by your first semester report card. Keep up the excellent work. Special con- gratulations to students who achieved honor roll recogni- tion (Please see the full list of honor roll students in this newsletter issue). Please welcome two new teachers who have recently joined our Kawananakoa ohana. Mr. Anthony Lee teaches SpEd English grades 6-8 and Mr. Ian Waterman-Reilly teaches grade 7 English classes. The second semester will be a busy one as we prepare for our WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation visit during the last week of February. The accreditation process in- volves an in-depth self-study and is a valuable part of on- going efforts for school improvement that focuses on student achievement and support. Beginning with the month of February and running through May, we will begin to administer various State assessments: ACCESS (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State) for students who are English Language Learners, HSA (Hawaii State Assessment) Science (8th grade), and the SBA (Standards Based Assessment) which is administered to all students. Parents can help support their child during the assessment peri- ods by making sure that their child enjoys a good night’s sleep and receives a nutritious breakfast. These assessments are very im- portant and we ask that parents schedule any trips during the school spring break and ensure that stu- dents are present and on time for school. Once again, thank you for your continued support and let’s all look forward to another productive semester, focused on success! We Are Kawananakoa...

It all adds up to success - KMS Math Team members, Freddie

Liang, Ryan Nguyen, Kuuleihoku McConnell, Nathan wong, Jaylynn

Sasano, Mia Jaralba, Tatiana Rillera, Emily Kwong, Stanley Lon and

Anlon Mao celebrated a 4th place finish (out of 14 competing

teams) and a tie for highest score in the team event at the Hawaii

Baptist Academy Middle School Math Challenge. Coached by Ms.

Marcella Clark and Ms. Jolie Ayabe, the team has been intently

practicing for the upcoming MATHCOUNTS at Kamehameha

Schools on February 10. Ten KMS math team members will be

selected to participate in this highly competitive event.

A spirited Kawananakoa Orchestra, directed by Mr. Danny

Mew, took to the road during the holiday season to perform

winter favorites at Pauoa, Nuuanu, Ma`ema`e ,Kauluwela

and Lanakila elementary schools, as well as 15 Craigside,

senior residence.

The string orchestra concluded their winter musical tour

with a rousing outdoor concert for the KMS student body,

faculty and staff. Sharing the stage with the many talented

students was surprise guest flautist and English teacher,

Mr. Damian Fahy on the Irish flute.

True leaders never stop learning - The KMS student leaders journeyed to Roosevelt High School to participate in the annual Lead-

ership Conference. Along with students from other neighboring elementary and middle schools, the KSA leaders engaged in col-

laborative activities aimed at improving interpersonal communication and problem solving skills, all while having a lot of fun!

...Scholastics, Service and So Much More!

Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Music Honor Society mem-

bers are more than just great musicians. They are service

inspired students who continue to give back to KMS. Ma-

halo to those members who helped to grade the dirt and

grass ramp-way between F and G buildings. Their hard work

will now enable vehicles to park behind K-building.

Life at sea on the “Mighty Mo” - Eighty KMS students had

the opportunity of a lifetime as they experienced an over-

night encampment aboard the Battleship Missouri Memo-

rial. Sleeping in crew berthing areas and enjoying Navy

ship-style meals on the mess deck, students and faculty

chaperones had the privilege of a behind the scenes tour of

the ship, participated in onboard activities that required

communication and teamwork and learned about the his-

torical significance of this last active service battleship in

the world.

The gift of music - The Kawananakoa Concert Band had a busy

holiday season, beginning with the Liliha-Palama Christmas

Parade on the day after Thanksgiving. The band continued in

December to visit area elementary schools, bringing not only

holiday music to the primary school students, but also sharing

information about the many instruments that make up the

band.

Band members, Jacob Agcaoili, Tyler Kuwabara, Austin Tanigu-

chi, Kolby Yamamoto, Brendan Kuwabara, and Cody Chen

along with band director Mr. Jason Chin, began their winter

break with a performance for the community at the downtown

First Hawaiian Bank building. The full band ended the season

with a well attended Winter Concert on campus.

Social Studies Team 7A students practice the power of asking

questions - Led by Cindy Mo, students, (Kaitlyn Oguma, Blaze

Kodama, Jia Jun Wei, Aria Tripp, Kaydenn Uyeda, Charlize Agag,

Julia Linn and others) used the Socratic seminar method of

formal discussion and critical thinking to examine the Pacific

Island problem of climate change, specifically sea level rise.

Seated in the inner circle, prepared with non--fiction articles

and direct quotes cited, students probed and questioned each

other regarding possible solutions while classmates observed

and rated participants. The Socratic seminar strategy allows

students to articulate their thoughts and work cooperatively to

problem solve.

Aloha KMS Parents and Guardians,

The first half of the school year has gone by so quickly, but your PTSA was

proud to end 2017 with a successful and well attended PTSA General Meeting

and Reflections Awards Night. Reflections Awards is a national program which

has a goal of sparking students’ imagination, curiosity and participation in the

arts. This year’s theme was entitled, “Within Reach”.

On December 13th, the PTSA recognized 29 students for their participation in

this special program and congratulated them for having the confidence to ex-

plore ideas and learn through literature, photography and the visual arts. Ten

students were chosen to go on to the state level competition. Congratulations

again to all participating students, their supportive parents and the teachers

who encouraged them.

If you would like to be a part of the KMS PTSA, it is not too late. Simply email

us at [email protected]. The board meets monthly in the school

library, but the meetings are open to general members who would like to at-

tend. Also, please keep in mind that board member elections for the 2018-19

school year will be held in the coming months. More information on PTSA and

the role of board members can be found at http://www.hawaiistateptsa.org/

running-a-pta.html.
