Smooth homology n-spheres bounding smooth

contractible n + 1-manifolds

Po constructed a non-simply connected three-manifold (a homologythree-sphere) that is the boundary of a contractible four-manifold.

We corresponded about our constructions: sewing a thickened 2-disconto the ∂ of D3 × S1.

The total space is a contractible 4-manifold.

The boundary is a non-simply connected homology 3-sphere.

Smooth homology 3-spheres bounding smooth

contractible 4-manifolds

The Poincare homology three-sphere is not the boundary of acontractible four-manifold.

Nowadays we know that n = 3 is the peculiar dimension for thisphenomenon!

Discuss: simple connectivity versus geometric simple connectivity.

Doubling manifolds

Both Po’s examples and mine had the further feature that when youdoubled them on their boundary—i.e., put two copies of themtogether by identifying their boundaries—you got a closeddifferentiable manifold diffeomorphic to the four-dimensional sphere,

which means that there is a smooth involution of S4 (switching thetwo copies of the doubled manifold) with non-simply-connected fixedpoint set, and therefore ’exotic’ in the sense that the involution is notequivalent to a linear involution.

Doubling manifolds

I remember that at the time—the late fifties of the past century—Iwas very much in awe of the magical construction of R.H. Bing whoshowed that the double of the closure of the bad component of thecomplement of the Alexander horned sphere in S3 is again(topologically) S3 giving, therefore, a thoroughly wild and untamableinvolution of S3.

The surprising re-creation of S4 by sewing together the boundaries oftwo manifolds continued as a theme of Po’s work, as in the marveloustheorem that he proved with Francois Laudenbach in the earlyseventies.

Knot theory a link to many other—seemingly

far-flung—aspects of mathematics

When I was trying to get a feel for number theory, I found that acertain analogy between the knot theory that I knew as a topologistand the phenomenology of prime numbers (that I was trying tobecome at home with) was exceedingly helpful, as a bridge.

I’ve returned to it often as a learning device and it seems that itmight allow two-way traffic, from knots to primes, and from primesto knots. In celebration of Po for this conference, let me explain verybriefly what this analogy consists of.

Some vocabulary to begin the analogy

Up to isotopy, the knot complement XK may be viewed as compactmanifold with torus boundary, TK = ∂XK , and within that torus—upto homotopy—there’s a normal meridian loop generating an infinitecycle group

NK ⊂ TK ⊂ XK .

In anticipation of our comparison we might call

DK = π1(TK ) = Z× Z

the decomposition group of the knot, and

IK = π1(NK ) = Z

the inertia subgroup.

A single prime number p in the integers ZThe algebra here is just given by the natural “reduction mod p”homomorphism

Z→ Z/pZ = Fp.

We will avoid the prime p = 2.

We will be taking the standard viewpoint of modern algebraicgeometry, and think of this surjective homomorphism as giving us anembedding of schemes,

our analogy begins by thinking of K := Spec(Fp) as ‘like’ the knot Kand S := Spec(Z) as ’like” the three-dimensional sphere S3.

and if X ab → X is the maximal unramified abelian (connected)cover, then we can also say

“Gal(X ab/X )” = ΠabK = Z∗p.

Discuss the Frobenius conjugacy class

Let q be a prime different from p and and consider the map inducedon fundamental groups of

Spec(Fq) ↪→ Spec(Z[1/p])

The conjugacy class of the image of the generator in ΠK is called theFrobenius conjugacy class of q in ΠK.
