EL Encierro: Fiesta de San Fermín
The fiestas of San Fermín are celebrated in Irunea/Pamplona, in the region of Navarra, every year from the 6th to the 14th of July since around 1385. They have become internationally known because of the running of the bulls, where the bulls are lead through the streets of the old quarter as far as the bull ring by runners.

1. The runners' uniforms may honor a saint... or butchersOne legend says the look is meant to honor San Fermin, as the white symbolizes sainthood and the red the fact that he was martyred. Others say the mozos are meant to be dressed like the butchers who originated the tradition.
2. Bulls aren't the only running beastsSix bulls go running through the streets of Pamplona, but a few steers (castrated bulls) are released along with them.
3. This tradition is lethalSince 1924, when officials began keeping records, 15 people have died in the run, and countless others have been injured.
4. It's better to be trampled than gored"A mozo says, it's better to be trampled by six bulls than to be gored by one
5. It's actually a series of short runsThe fenced route the bulls run through is only 875 yards long — about half a mile.
You say tomato. In Spain, they say ¡TOMATE!
In Bunol, Spain, the annual La Tomatina Festival, the epic Iberian food fight that draws thousands of adventure-seekers and saucy Spaniards alike to partake in an hour of pulp-pelting, tomato-laced fun. It’s estimated that around 120,000 pounds of tomatoes (it's a fruit, not a vegetable) are tossed at this annual fiesta, which began in 1945.

Local legend claims the event began after a group of youngsters waged a food fight near a vegetable stand on the town square. They met again the next year and pelted each other – and passers-by-creating the annual tradition.
