Prime School Open House“
In the months leading up to Prime One School's open house, students, teachers and staff were buzzing with activity, preparing what was to be Prime One School's most extravagant event so far. The aim of the event was to raise awareness about environmental issues as well as raising funds for Lion's Club, a humanitarian organisation.

An attraction in front of the school was the school's Marching Band, complete with colourful flags and uniforms.

On a beautiful sunny Sunday in April, the school grounds and building were covered in decorations, exhibits and tents. The sports field had been converted to the bazaar and funfair, complete with games, competitions, and a bouncy castle. There were over 70 stands selling cakes, toys, offering services and foods ranging from durian pancakes to Penang noodles. A culinary feast… Prime One's students could be seen selling different kinds of food such as hot dogs, fruit salad, and juice.
Besides shopping, eating and bouncing, Prime One School offered many different kinds of entertainment to our visitors. In the morning on the outdoor stage, there were karaoke, spelling, dancing and creative modelling competitions. These competitions were opened to all schools. The new programme for the coming year was introduced, the opening of Senior High School

Throughout the day, school tours to look at PrimeOne School's facilities. Highlights of the tour were the music room, beautifully decorated classrooms, the library and science lab. Outbound activities such as a bouncy castle and “Trust Fall completed variety of entertainment available on that day.

A highlight of the day was the fully sold-out “Heal the World” musical featuring a 200 POS students including “Street Percussion” using recycled materials, the school band, traditional arts such as tarian saman, and angklung and some fledgling solo singers. The musical was about 3 orphans forced to live on the street and survive by begging. In the beginning we are shown the evils of the world: drug addiction, violence, poverty and environmental destruction. Then the children fall asleep, dreaming of a better world. In their dreams, they are shown what the world could be like. They awake in a forest. The trees are cut down. But all is not lost. The children heal the trees. In the final section, there is a celebration of life: a candlelight vigil, a dance and finally all the cast sing “Heal the World”. The idea of the show was that we must save the world for the next generation by teaching the children how to look after the world, because the children are our hope for the future.

二零零八年四月十三日甲大国际规范学校举办一个主题为 “ 让世界变得更美好 ”的展览会。甲大国际规范学校希望藉由这个展览会,让所有人能重视到全球暖化对于世界的危机。
这次的展览会吸引了超过七十位的商家前来摆设摊位,其中包括电器用品、银行、饮食和游戏等,让每位前来参观的人都可以随自己的喜好来购买东西。小朋友们就更不用说了,看他们手中拿着奖品,脸上高兴的样子,就不难发现这里的游戏让他们度过了一个高兴的一天。
从早上十点半,甲大国际规范学校所举办的对外歌唱、劲舞、服装表演、英文拼音比赛正式开始,参赛者使出浑身解数,为的就是想夺得冠军,为学校争光。下午两点半音乐戏剧在甲大国际规范学校的礼堂开幕,看学生们在舞台上精采的演出,让台下的观众拍手叫好。
整个展览会在下午五点在和谐的气氛中圆满结束。

Prime School Students Show True Empathy
PrimeOne School Family Donate more than 23million rupiah to China's earthquake victims.
Yesterday, my heart swelled with pride because I am a part of PrimeOne School's great family. PrimeOne School family had donated more than 23 million rupiah for the family of one of our teacher's families, Ms. Susan (Lause Wang Feng), whose house was destroyed during the recent earthquake in Sinchuan, China.
It was a truly touching moment in MPH, when the academic director, Ms. Fauziah, students and teachers presented Ms. Susan with the donations. Ms. Susan couldn't withhold her tears, as she gave a heartfelt thanks to our pupils.

An Elementary 1 pupil, Lady Joey Shimizu made a truly great gesture. She donated her full piggy bank, which she has been collecting since she was in Kindergarten. Her mother had tried to stop her from donating it, but she insisted: “I was saving this for someone in need.” I think we can all learn a lot from this pure action of true empathy for the needy.
Upon leaving MPH, teachers and pupils alike shook Ms. Susan's hand and hugged her. A great moment for PrimeOne School!

Barongsai at PRIME SCHOOL
Imagine you come back from your holidays and you are greeted with a warm welcome…
thOn the 13 of February, PrimeOne students returning from their holidays were welcomed by a the Barongsai (Lion Dance Group), Bakom PKB Medan. The loud crash of the symbols and the bang of the drum attracted and excited the students, and parents stayed to watch.
First, the 8 colourful barongsai lions went round the school, followed by students giggling excitedly. From time to time the Barongsai would turn around and 'bite' a particularly forward student. After going around the school classes, the barongsai group performed all sorts of acrobatic tricks. Finally the students had their pictures taken with their friends.

“After this, Miss wants us to write a report about the special visitors.” said Cynthia, Elementary 3.
“I have to interview the Barongsai group this year. It's part of our project this month.” said Tania Angel.
Ms. Fauziah, the principal of Elementary commented that POS had invited the Barongsai group to celebrate Imlek. This programme is a routine school activity. Celebrating Imlek together regardless of race or religion, teaches that we are a tolerant and harmonious family as well as welcomes the students with a crash, a bang and a lot of excitement. Well, we are a unique school…

Giant Cake at POS
“Wow, there is a giant cake at MPH,” said Filbert, a JH2 student, to his friends.“It's a treat from our beloved school together with Chen Bakery,” Miss Ninie
ndtold the students who were gathered in MPH on May 2 2008. The cake was to commemorate National Education Day.Who could resist tasting that cake on that day?
The cake tasted as sweet as those Pre-School children's smiles. Prime One School shared its love and care so tenderly through the giant cake so everybody would remember that day. Prime One School uses many ways to educate its students, but the platform of those ways is love and care.That giant cake was shared by all of PrimeOne's ever-growing family: Pre-School, Elementary, Junior High students, teachers, principals, directors, staff, security guards and cleaning service officers took part in this sweet ceremony.

Global Warming
In preparation for Open House, we had a Monthly Guest from Lion's Club.
They showed the students the importance of understanding global warming
and gave tips on how to minimize global warming. Several years ago, many
people thought global warming was a myth. Today, we may see the facts: the
effects of global warming are felt by every one in every country in the world.
This is not a myth anymore; it is real and it needs to be solved, or else we will not
be able to live peacefully on earth.
What exactly is global warming all about? It is the increase in the average
temperature of the earth's surface which has occurred in recent decades. In
short, it is a global climate change. We experience extreme temperature or
climate changes. More people cut down trees in order to support production.
But they forget to plant more trees in order to save the world for our children.
The emissions of carbon dioxide are getting higher and this of course results in
ozone depletion. The list of global warming causes will go on and on if we don't
change our lifestyles.

Then how are we going to reduce global warming? Several ways that we may do
in order to reduce global warming are:
1. Stop cutting trees and plant more trees.
2. Throw rubbish in trash can.
3. Stop smoking.
4. Maintain our automobiles or motorcycles so they don't pollute our air.
5. Reduce the usage of plastic and styrofoam.
6. Switch off electronic devices when we are not using them.
7. Reduce the usage of paper.
8. Use recycled materials.
The theme for the Open House is “Make the World a Better Place”. This theme
has been chosen in line with the fact that we have to start caring for our earth
because this is our home. If our earth is destroyed, we may not have a place to
live anymore. So, we must start caring for our environment starting from
ourselves. If one person has started, others will follow, and perhaps our
successors will still have a lovely earth to live in in the future. In the words of
Mahatma Gandhi, “Our earth may fulfil our needs, but not our wants.” Let's
make a world a better place together.

INTERNET COMES TO POS
In a talk about the communication which is now conquering the universe, people find it easier and easier to communicate over long distances. New technologies must be studied and practiced in order to reap the benefits of advanced technologies in the era of globalisation.
For the reasons above, POS (Prime One School) invited the TELKOM Company based at Jl. Putri Hijau Medan to be our April Monthly Guest.
Students were given an opportunity to relieve their curiosity by asking questions related to the internet to them in turns. Almost all of them raised hand not only because they needed to ask but also there were some souvenirs presented for those who were chosen to ask. “Why must we type '.com'?” “What is “www”?”“What is a website?”
Telkom has been very kind in providing free internet access for one month so that students could practice using it. Prime One School has once again improved its facilities for both teachers and students to do their tasks and duties well and smoothly.

A lesson at Pottery Workshop
This was surely a remarkable experience for
the Elementary students of Prime One School.
Not only did they witness the process of
making pot, but also directly involved in it. Did
you know that pots are made of clay? This was,
indeed, the first time for our students to see
and feel the texture of clay. All of them were
astonished as they saw the ball of clay they
had put on the roller turned into something
like donut shape, before it went up and up and
became a vase! As their hands were busy
helping with the roller and clay, questions
rushed out like water from their mouths.
“Where does all of this clay come from?”
asked Rafi, E3 student. “Why is the clay wet?
Can we dry it? How?” asked another student.
“Where will the pots be distributed to?” “Can
we make the clay colourful? How?”. “How long
does it take to make a big pot like this?”
Wow, not only can we make vases, plates,
bowls, cups, saucers or jugs of clay, but also
dragons, dinosaurs, hearts, cats and even
Sponge Bob!
Today, our Elementary students have learned
that there are so many kinds of way to
dedicate ourselves to the world. One of them
is by exposing art. Keep on creating! We can
make this world a better place to live in!

I want to be a postman
Lots of people go to the post office to send letters everyday. But have you ever
wondered how it feels like to be a postman? How many of us will have the chance to
experience it? Well, today is a very special day for Prime One School Kindergarten
2 students as they are going to assemble their very own Kindergarten 2 Post Office.
“Good Morning friends,” Josh anxiously greets his friends who are going to send
letters. “I want to write letters to my friends and teachers,” says Ricky delightedly.
As our little postman entered the Junior High and Elementary classes, straight
away all the students in the class start to clap hands for their little brothers and
sisters. “This is amazing…even though they are still small but they know how to be
a postman! They are great!” a Junior High student exclaims.
Everybody seems to have lots of fun through this activity. Mme Dewi, PrimeOne
School's Centre Director takes this opportunity to send messages to everybody at
POS. “Thank you my brilliant and hardworking little postmen…”, says Mme Dewi.

Our passion for Japanese cuisine
Do you ever wonder how those delicious foods in restaurants were made? Well,
Prime One School Kindergarten-2 students were given the honour to be little
chefs at one of the favourite Japanese restaurant in Medan, Sushi Tei.
How many of us will have the chance to be a little chef? This was an unforgettable
experience for the Kindergarten-2 students, because for the very first time in their
life, they learned how to make sushi.

“The chefs are very friendly and they teach us how to make many kinds of sushi”,
said Josh. “I want to be a chef one day”, Jason announced. They were introduced
to a lot of new things that they never saw, such as nori (seaweed), makisu
(bamboo sushi roller), vinegar rice, unagi (Japanese eel), and many more.
The staff at Sushi Tei were impressed with our well-mannered students.
“They could be great chefs one day”, Ms Imay added.
Here, it seems that age does not matter at all as long as the passion is there.
Prime One school always promotes healthy food to the students. Generally,
Japanese cuisine is categorized as healthy food.
“My teachers say no junk food”, William added. Now they know that Japanese
foods are low in fat and carbohydrate but high in proteins, vitamins and
minerals. This is what we call fun learning. 20
Most of our Kindergarten 1 students have dined at Papa Ron's Pizza
with their parents. But this time, they will have the pleasure to enter
the kitchen and create their own pizza topping! Starting from
spreading tomato sauce on the dough, sprinkling mozzarella cheese,
then free creation! The students had a lot of fun in deciding what to
put on their pizza. Should it be sausages, mushrooms, onions, tomato,
beef or chicken? Or how about everything? While busy working on
their masterpiece of pizza, at the same time our students also learned
about different kinds of pizza toppings. They learned to love food and
not be choosy while eating. See, bell peppers and onions taste don't
taste bad at all, especially when you are the one who put them on your
pizza. “I want to share my pizza with my mommy and daddy”, said the
students.
The Little Pre-School Chefs
Meanwhile, our playgroup students had a chance to visit the kitchens of
Chen Bakery. They witnessed the process of making bread. They even
had the opportunity to mix the ingredients and watch them go into a big
mixer, before finally ending up in a big oven. Now, the students know that
we need eggs, milk, flour, sugar and butter in order to make bread. Then,
we may stuff the bread with cheese, chocolate or even blueberry. Hmm,
it looks so tasty. “I like chocolate bread very much” said Jocelin, one of
our PG students.
Visiting the kitchen and being involved directly in the process of making
food has made the students appreciate the food they eat. All of them
promised not to waste food, as it does not come out instantly. Cooking
delicious food takes time and patience.

A Splashing FieldtripPrime One School's students and teachers go on a 'splashing' adventure to Medan's only water theme park, Pantai Cermin.
Days before the fieldtrip, there was a buzz of excitement in all the JH classes: “Miss, am I in your group?”“Miss, are you coming too?”“What will we eat there?”
Patience is a virtue, virtue is a grace. Be patient, kids, and before we know it, it's the day of the trip. HOORAY!!! Our students were on time and ready to go an hour before our scheduled departure.
On the bus there, students were calm, sharing snacks and gossip. Finally we had arrived. “We're there! I can see the sea!”Before going inside, we took some group photos. Students and teachers quickly changed and ran for the slides and rented tubes to float in. Some of the teachers got quite addicted to the slides and kept on going down them (!)

After a buffet lunch, it was time to get back into the pool. Seemed like everyone had the same idea: floating around the lazy pool! The lazy pool is a donut shaped lake with artificial waves and an island in the middle. Visitors can float around on single or double tubes and just relax. Well, Junior High Students and teachers had a slightly different idea of relaxation; They joined all the tubes by holding on to each other's tubes. Some students pulled or pushed the tubes and sometimes the people inside the tubes, forming a long 'snake' drifting around the pool, with people falling off or swimming alongside. Believe it or not, this was so fun we did it for hours!
Suddenly it was time to go home. Tired and slightly sunburnt, we snuggled up on the bus home to our beloved POS.

Future bankers?
When JH students had their fieldtrip to the NISP bank, it was clear that some had found the ideal job…
“So, how do you get to be the boss of a bank?” asked Michael, an inquisitive and ambitious student.
Ms. Widiny, the Branch Service Manager, and Ms. Rosti showed and explained to the students about the roles and functions of the different areas of the bank; Customer service for opening a bank account and the tellers, for withdrawing cash. Then it was behind the scenes: Forex (Foreign exchange), in charge of buying and selling different currencies, and marketing, in charge of finding new customers.
Everywhere we went, students asked the staff and guides questions about their jobs. Students asked the customer service how to open a bank account, about the highest priced currency, and why currencies are priced in such a way… In fact we had to remind students that time was limited, as we had to get back to school for their lessons.
Finally, students were reminded to save money for the future and informed about how to save effectively. They were given a souvenir of their visit. Thanks to the welcoming and friendly NISP staff, the field trip was a great success!

Prime School Students are ready for
tomorrow
In this millennium era, technology grows rapidly. Almost all aspects of
lives have been touched by computer. Prime One School students,
unexceptional, are also not computer illiterate. Since Kindergarten
level, the students have been introduced to the using of computer as a
source to enhance their learning journey.
Seizing the opportunity to enrich the knowledge in the awareness of
internet using, Prime One School students, Kindergarten and
Elementary, visited Plasa Telkom and Speedy Learning Centre. For
Kindergarten students, it was really a heart capture moment as they
visited a place where their telephone bills are paid. They learned to know
several media of communication, such as internet, telephone and mobile
phone. Do you know that young children also have their own telephone
line? Well, you can try to call “Si Poncil” from your house by dialing
800009. Si Poncil is ready to entertain you with stories and amuse you
with knowledge.

For the Elementary students, chances to explore the world further were
provided at Speedy Learning Centre. They were absolutely amazed to
see how the world could be seen at sight by a click. If you wish to know
who is the President of Kenya, all you need to do is just simply search in
google. The Elementary students surely had good time in sending e-mail
and surfing through websites. Some of them said that they would like to
try to make their own blog at home. Hernando, one of the students said,
“Internet is really fun. It is not only used to play games. We can search
for endless information by using internet”.
Seeing the students bear the alertness of internet as a source of
educative information makes the teachers' hearts filled with
enchantment. It is, indeed, our duty to equip young generation with
positive and resourceful knowledge. As what it is stated by the motto of
Telkom: Education for Tomorrow, Prime One School students are now

LION'S CLUB BAZAAR AND COMPETITIONS AT UNILAND
Prime One School students do not only perform well academically, but are
creative and confident. They have proven themselves by participating in the th
competitions held by Lions Club on 16 March 2008 at Uniland. On that Sunday,
our students astounded the audience by their daring and convincing
performances: dancing, reciting poetry, doing Sempoa (Abacus).
“At Prime One School, I usually practice reciting poems with my
teachers,” said Eka. Lusiana, the winner of sempoa competition, also agreed to
the statement. According to her, learning Sempoa helps her to sharpen her
memory. Through constant practice, now Luciana is able to count very fast.
Once again, Prime One School has proven itself to be the school which produces
many talented students. Two thumbs up for all our students!

BOB National Sempoa Competition at Palladium
thOn Sunday, the 4 of May, 2008, Palladium was full of small children wearing orange and white T-shirts, buzzing with excitement. What was going on? SIP's National Sempoa Competition, of course! Besides Sempoa, there were Mathematics and Drawing competitions. Naturally, POS pupils were interested in joining in. As usual, PrimeOne's pupils went home with a number of prizes. Some of the names are getting quite familiar, yet there were some new faces amongst the winners.
Congratulations to all our winners! For those who didn't make it, try, try and try again!
POS was present in other ways, too. Junior High Students performed their “Street Percussion”, using recycled oil drums, metal roofing, gas cans and aqua gallons to accompany 2 solo singers singing Michael Jackson's “They Don't Care About Us” a capella. The audience were impressed. One gentleman commented: “Wow! That's really creative!” Well, that's PrimeOne School!

Golden Opportunityth
On Tuesday, March 25 2008, Mdm. Dewi, Ms. Silvia, Ms. Fauziah, Ms. Ninie, Ms.
Meliana, Ms. Eduscha, Ms. Rofina, Ms. Rosmina, Ms. Susan and I were sent to
attend a seminar for Principals and Educators. It was held at Hotel Danau Toba
International, Royal I –III Room to be exact.
The title of the seminar was “Moving from Good to Great Christian School”.
Our respective speaker for this session was Daniel Egeler, Ed.D.
Then we were divided into 2 groups: The Teacher Makes the Difference and
Building the Character of Students.
In The Teacher Makes the Difference, there were 2 sessions; Balancing your
Hats was led by Janet Nason, Ed.D., and Discipline and Discipleship which
was led by Daniel Egeler, Ed.D.
In Building the Character of Students, there were 2 sessions as well; The
Nature of Character Building and Methods and Program of Character
Building which was led by Ishak Wonohadidjojo, Ed.D.
I was assigned in the first group. It was an interesting topic and I learnt that
if we want to be great, there are several characteristics that we must have:
1. Level 5 leadership: the commitment to serve to achieve excellence. It is
basically what we all call Service Leadership. We build success by
passing on what we have built successfully to our successors.
2. First who, then what: we must assign the right person to the right place
and provide the best people with the greatest opportunities, not the
greatest problems. When people who love to strive and do their best are
given the greatest opportunities, I do believe they will do their best
whatever happens.
3.. Confronting reality: no matter how hard it is to stand up for the truth, we
must be able to hold on to the truth. Lead with questions, not answers;
the more ideas, the better; and we must be objective all the time.
4. The Hedgehog concept: simplification through the very basic principle
or platform, which is our mission in life and is linked directly to the
mission of our school.
5. Discipline: discipline in every aspect of our life. I do believe that the
most disciplined people always win over the most intelligent people.
Discipline is a habit that has to be practiced and applied constantly. One
key word to describe discipline is consistency.
We all understand that we must hire the right people in order to have quality
teachers. But how do we know whether they are quality teachers or not?
Quality teachers are matured teachers. They are the people who:
1. understand the mission of our school and committed to it 100%.
2. have the willingness and ability to step back, self-reflect and self-
evaluate.
3. critically improve education to be better strategically.

Some schools have shifted from good to great because of a certain
“momentum”. When the momentum is right, the happenings are dramatic and
revolutionary which shows that “Half of the effort leads to twice the result”.
This momentum is created by those dedicated teachers and leaders who have
made “the breakthrough”. We can make this happen when we have faith.
Never, never, never give up! No matter what happens, we will never give up. I
do believe, through time, the momentum will come.
Everybody has different roles in their lives. We must know when to put on and
take off those roles. The essential thing here is priority. We must know what to
prioritise; which comes first, second, and so on. Just as Stephen Covey writes
in his book, 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People', Habit No. 3 is First
Things First.
We must balance all aspects of our life and for sure, we will be able to live life
to the fullest and see the best results come out from what we have done. Thank
you for the golden opportunity that has been given to me.

What we needed:
What we did:1. We were to construct a force meter out of this spring using the standard slotted weights as reference. Noted and recorded the pointer reading against the ruler without any added weight in the table.
2. Attached a 50 g mass to the lower end of the spring. The spring stretched under gravitational force. Noted and recorded the pointer reading in the table.
3. Repeated step 4, increasing the weight in steps of 50 g. Tabulated our readings as right.4. Plotted a graph of the force readings against the pointer reading.

1. We did the experiment in the school garden . Principal said if we dared do it in the classroom, we’d have to advertise in the paper for new science teacher. Now that gives us an idea!
2. Rizky and Samuel blew up the balloon a few time to make it baggy.
3. Then we blew up the balloon and twisted its neck.
4. While we pinched the twisted neck of the balloon tightly to stop the air getting out. We pulled the opening of the balloon over the neck of the funnel.
5. We put four table spoonfuls of flour into the funnel. My burster was ready for the BIG BLOW-UP!

The science behind the experiment
1. When you blow up a balloon,
you’re puffing air it.
2. As you blow air into the
balloon, the air pressure builds
up. Soon it’s stronger than the
air pressure squishing on
the balloon from outside.
3. The air pressure inside the
balloon is strong enough to push
the sides of the balloon
outwards.
4. But the stretchy rubber sides
of the balloon are pushing back
and trying to get the air out of
the balloon. And the air pressing
outside is still pressing in.
5. When you let go of the neck of
the balloon, these forces blast
the air out of the balloon. And
the air fires the flour like a
volcano.

How to move an object without using a magnet?
First, we need tow AAA batteries, some compact compasses, a coiled wire and some insulated wires.
Finally, we turn the compact compasses without using a magnet.
After that, connect the wire to both positive and negative sides of both batteries.
Next, arrange the compact compasses around the coiled wire.

The sick chickens mysteryEijkman Christianson was at his wit’s end.
In 1884 he had gone to Indonesia to study a mystery disease. The local called it, “I can’t”.
He injected animals with germs thought to cause the disease. The animals stayed healthy!
Then his pet chicken went down with the disease.
He moved to another place and they got better! But why?

Maybe they just need some fresh air.
Or maybe it was due to a change in diet? In their first home the birds were eating boiled rice.
Now they were eating brown rice.
In turned out that the brown outer layer of the rice grains was rich in Vitamin B. This prevented, “I can’t” or as we call it, beri-beri
Mind you, it took Eijkman many years of expriments to prove that eating the wrong rice had made the chickens sick. As for the chickens themselves - things could have been worse. Imagine if something had gone wrong with their digestive bits and pieces. They’d have been sick as parrots then! Yes, we’re talking about the gruesome guts!
