Day 1, Nov 10th

After an early 2 am start Karin and I took a taxi to Lund where we entered the train towards Copenhagen Airport. Even a thin layer of snow made the roads slippery, but compared to the weather conditions in Stockholm this was nothing. Without any advance notice from the forecast, a half meter of heavy of snow during the night made the traffic situation chaotic. If Eva and Christer hadn’t pre-ordered a taxi to Arlanda Airport they would have been stocked in the blizzard. The connection flight to Amsterdam was late but with unhealthy stress hormone levels they could enter the flight to Entebbe in time. Around 11 hours later and after a stop in Kigali, Rwanda, the guide Paul met us at Entebbe airport. We arrived at Speke Resort Hotel at 00:15 after a long day and tired went to bed with high expectations for the next day.

Day 2, Nov 11th

The short sleep was compensated by the well-known ”first day of the trip rush” where most of the birds are new and fresh and the majority of silhouettes on wires, buildings and in trees creates an overwhelming temptation to stop the car and look. We were driving towards the legendary Mabamba Wetlands and the main bird target of the entire trip; the pre-historic, dinosaur-like and iconic Shoebill. Mabamba means lung fish on local language and that is a favorite dish for the Shoebills thus making these wetlands a good place to these sought-after birds. After 1.5 h of driving and several new species along the way we entered the narrow swamp boats and began the hunt. The previous week the boatmen said that they only had seen 1 Shoebill in a long distance and that told us that we could not take sightings for granted.

But after 25-30 min we saw a shining grayish head in the reed. Yes! What a relief and what a bird! We were fortunate to see 3 Shoebills really well and their mighty and unquestionable appearance filled us with euphoria and the strong feeling of a special moment of complete mental presence in life.

With this feeling the hunt for other species went on along with a quick rise in ambient temperature. Several Western March Harriers and 1 African Marsh Harrier were hunting over the reed beds and Malachite Kingfishers and Blue-breasted Bee-eaters flew around like colorful pearls around the open water mirrors. Among egrets, herons, ducks, Long-toed Lapwings and African Jacanas we saw 4 shy Lesser Jacanas and a Greater Swamp Warbler. The air was filled with sounds from shorebirds, weavers and Winding Cisticolas and combined with the visual impressions it gave an unforgettable framework to this experience. In the heavy traffic jam on the way back we had our first Grey Kestrel near the road. After a late lunch, we walked around and soft-birded in the hotel garden and along the beach of Lake Victoria (the second largest lake on earth). There were many terns, gulls and cormorants over the water and well known shore birds from Europe rested near the water line. I worked a while on an Eastern Olivaceous Warbler and could also confirm that the African fiscals are very similar in shape and behavior to our shrikes. In company with some hungry mosquitos, as the only disturbing element, Eva, Christer, Karin and I sat down under the African sky and large full moon and enjoyed a couple of beers as a nice final of the first day.

Day 3, Nov 12th

The breakfast buffet at Speke Resort contained more that we had room for in the early morning hour, but in the hindsight, we understood that the amount of food served its purpose as we had a long drive to Kibale National Forest NP and a late lunch. Along the way, we made some productive stops and the most memorable was probably near Buloba where the sharp-eared and -eyed Paul got a White-winged Swamp Warbler into the open. Actually, Paul said he never had seen this shy and skulky species equally good and it indeed enriched us with superb views. In the same area 2 Ross’s Turacos flew close to the road.

When we arrived at the beautifully located Primate Lodge the both sudden appearing and disappearing rain poured down heavily, but the service minded staff at the lodge ran out with umbrellas to secure a dry transfer between the jeep and the buildings. The intensity of the forest bird coir escalated during the afternoon but many birds were hard to see. After intense watching among leaves and branches we among other things saw a Red-tailed Bristlebill, different kinds of greenbuls, barbets and tinkerbirds and the monkeys Guereza (Black and White Colobus), Uganda Red Colobus and Olive Baboon. Just before dark the strongest cicada orchestra we had ever heard started and it almost drowned the misplaced and annoying sound from the lodge’s power generator diesel engine. The engine stopped later and we had a lovely time at the terrace summing up the species list of the day with some cold drinks. Day 4, Nov 13th

In order to commence the Green-breasted Pitta tracking we had an early start with breakfast 5:30. We were carefully instructed to put the stockings outside the trousers to avoid the free service offered by jungle aunts. As we walked on with torches in the dark on the narrow trail in the dark the bird song slowly started and Blue-breasted Kingfisher was one of the first clear voices. At around 6:30 we heard the Pitta calling several times and it was hardly enough light when we started our slow line formatted walk in search of this exceptionally shy and secretive bird. We walked up and down slopes in the wood and after a while the sweat soaked all layers of clothes (at least on me). Along with Christer, Eva, Karin, Paul and I we had great help from the armed guard Bosco. The Pitta hunt where nicely interrupted by fantastic meetings with flocks of Red Colobus monkeys and we were all happy to find 3 Chimpanzees by ourselves. Black and White-casqued Hornbills and Great Blue Turacos gave good views. Paul found a Red-capped Robin-chat that curiously followed our movements for a short while. The Green Hylia had a strong sound that broke through the constant wall of calls from tinkerbirds, Western Orioles, greenbuls, Tambourine Doves, sunbirds and starlings. The heat constantly increased and around 10:30 we still hadn’t had any visual contact with the pitta and we were ready to give up. I prepared myself mentally with that it was anyhow nice that we had heard the bird at dawn but it would of course have been so nice to see it. But Paul refused to give up and said that we should try up and down the slope one more time. Suddenly Karin waved at me and pointed at Paul who obviously had something in site in front of him. We all tumbled down trying to balance speed and courteousness in the movements. First I saw only dead leaves and dense under vegetation, but after some seconds a silhouette from the dream world with a well-marked superscilium and a stunning color set-up appeared; a Green-breasted Pitta! We all saw the bird really well when it moved in the gloomy low ground vegetation and with high ISO it was possible to get a few shots. We all wondered how such a strikingly beautiful creature could make itself so invisible. Blessed and happy we exchanged high-Vs before we, with light steps, went back to the lodge for lunch.

After another really well-tasting meal with great service at Primate Lodge we went back and forth in the jungle headed by a specialized Chimpanzee guide. During one of the loops we got good views of Grey-cheeked Mangabey that turned out to be the 7th species of monkey after just 2.5 days in the field. Awesome! After numerous calls on phone and walkie talkie and quick walks up and down hills and valleys we reached a pride of boldly farting and body fixing Chimpanzees. We sat down, photographed, took-in and deeply enjoyed this primate connecting session. What a day!

Day 5, Nov 14th

After breakfast, we went to Bigodi Wetlands 7 km from the lodge. The nature surrounding the nature trail was, compared to yesterday’s jungle, more open making it much easier to spot the birds. A young bird guide called Roger led us with support from Paul and in the hands of this expert duo all bird sounds were identified. Roger took part in a bird guide development program partly led by Paul with the aim to attract younger promising persons for nature guidance and conservation and this is indeed a valuable project worth all support. The morning was clear and bright with massive bird activities and the list of species grew fast. When the guide gets excited it is always a good bird coming up and when we had 3 Joyful Greenbuls over our heads Paul spontaneously called out ”what a joyful bird”. We had a Mottled Spinetail, a shy Brown Illadopsis, Green Crombec, beautiful African Pygmy Kingfishers, Marsh Tchagra, Snowy-crowned Robin-chat, 6 sunbird species, different weavers, bee-eaters, vocal Little Greenbuls and many other species. To me the Double-toothed Barbet was the most handsome bird in the morning. From a mammal perspective, our 8th species of monkey dropped in when a L’Hoest’s Monkey appeared in a tree along the trail. After Roger explaining that one of the features was the blue bag of the males I commented: ”so you take them by the balls”, but I do not exactly know where that landed and if it was politically correct.

After a good indian influenced lunch we headed towards Queen Elisabeth NP. The charm and spirit at Marafiki Lodge and view over Lake George were striking. In the scope, we saw African Elephants and African Buffalos in a distance and from the nice terrace we for example had White-browed Coucal, Jacobin, Diederik and Red-breasted Cuckoo, Moustached Grass Warbler, White-browed Robin-chat, Tawny-flanked Prinia, Village Weaver and White-winged Widowbird. Peace of mind completely took over when the lodge crew lit up a fire and a pile of oil lamps all the way from the main building to the half tent-cottages and we had a lovely 4-course dinner beside the fire under the African sky. What more can you wish for?

Day 6, Nov 15th

A pair of Spotted Eagle Owls had a night performance of deep calls and I could see them on a wire in flash light outside the tent and a Black-shouldered Nightjar played a couple of times before we went off. As we drew deeper into the heart of Queen Elisabeth NP, after a breakfast at dawn, Paul showed his excellent and impressive skills in the field by spotting new species with ears and eyes. We heard and saw some nicely colored Black-headed Gonoleks and one Lesser Masked Weaver. In this grassland, we had our first larks and among Flappet and Rufous-naped we also had some White-tailed. There were herds of African Buffaloes, Waterbucks and slender well designed Uganda Kobs and some of the latter chased each other with testosterone filled frenzy. Six species of vulture scanned the area for corpses and I was particularly happy for the kind of odd looking Palm-nut Vulture that I had never seen before. We had good views of wintering Kittlitz’s Plovers as well as Wattled, Senegal, Crowned and Spur-winged Lapwings. A powerful Martial Eagle passed right over the jeep and we saw different harriers and some other eagle species. Two Harlequin Quails and two Common Buttonquails slowly walked and sought shelter in the grass close to the car. The four of us were happy to have good views and great photo opportunities on so many birds and mammals.

After lunch at the lodge and some rest (not easy to shut down the senses with so many birds around) we drove to Kazinga River for a boat trip. When we were about to enter the boat black clouds and thunderstorms quickly appeared and first we feared that the trip would be cancelled. But after a few lightning’s and strong wind attacks it became calm again. The surface of the river was covered with Whiskered and White-winged Black Terns and we saw a few Banded Martins among the big flocks of Sand Martins. Black Crakes walked around in the shore line together with many other species and among those there were different familiar shore birds from Europe. The biggest pigs in the world, the Hippos, were grunting and yawning everywhere along the shore line and a few Nile Crocodiles rested on the beach. After intense attempts to note down numbers and take photos of everything, Eva, Christer, Karin and I leaned back, relaxed and enjoyed this massive nature experience. Grey-headed and Black-headed Gulls followed the boat on the way back and we had never seen such huge number of Pied Kingfishers. A Blue-cheeked Bee-eater sat nicely perched and the boat’s own guide shouted out it as Madagascar Bee-eater first but from photos the identity

was obvious. We came back to Paul with smiles all over our faces really happy with the whole day. By then we did not know that the best was yet to come. On the way back to the lodge we were looking forward to a little night drive and I joked with Paul and said ”now I have prepared the camera for night shots of Serval”. Paul smiled and replied that he only had seen Serval three times before and that lowered the expectations a bit. In the dark a bird lifted from the gravel road and we stopped, went out and listened. Around the car, we had 2 flying and calling Swamp Nightjars and a third bird called in a distance. As we enjoyed these night birds we saw a car far away that changed the lights on the car again and again and we wondered what was going on. After meeting the car Paul suddenly shouted ”on the road, on the road”. The eyes of an African Leopard were a fact and in the beam from my flashlight we could follow this magnificent animal for several minutes. It was an adult female and she marked her territory as she passed us a few meters from the car. We were all laughing of joy as we left the great cat and drove on. Just a few minutes later we again saw a pair of reflecting eyes on the road ahead and it the flashlight we immediately could identify it; a Serval!!! We could not believe it but we got pretty close before the long-legged shy savanna cat slowly went into the vegetation surrounding the ditch and after around a minute disappeared.

We did not really have any words left after this grace filled moment and after high fives and almost un-controlled laughs we all became a bit introvert and tried to digest what we just had experienced.

Day 7, Nov 16th

The plan today was to drive south through Queen Elisabeth NP towards Bwindi Forest NP and Buhoma and if the luck lingered on we had the chance to see the unique Tree-climbing Lions of Uganda. Rumors said that the lions hadn’t been seen for over a week. We took it easy and birded along the way and were fortunate to see the beautiful Papyrus Gonolek and a Lesser Swamp Warbler at one of the stops. A bunch of German folks, where one or two had binoculars, rushed forward every time we saw the Gonolek thus pushing the bird back into the reed. We brought our usual lunch boxes and just as we had stopped to eat Paul got a call telling that the Tree Lions had been seen earlier this day. If we had been driving carefully before it was now Paul got into Dakar Rally mood and we had to have steady grips as the car flushed more butterflies than at least Karin and I had ever seen from the bumpy gravel road. After entering the hot area Paul suddenly said ”I see lions”. Three 1.5-year old lions were lying in big Acacia around 100 meters from the road. One adult lioness and a sub adult male rested in a tree 100 meter further back. During a most enjoyable lunch in the car the three cubs jumped down and marched on a line to join the two older lions. There are approximately 185 lions in the park and these are the only known lions that have the habit to spend so much time up in trees. As we got closer to Buhoma it started to rain heavily and when we got to the beautifully located Haven Lodge the clouds were hanging over the rain forest just as we had seen on pictures in advance. The lodge crew was like always extremely friendly and service minded. Our cottages were facing the mountains and the bathroom window went from roof to floor and from the terrace outside the cabin you could, beside the stunning view of the clouded forest, enjoy Northern Double-collared, Variable, Bronzy and Collared Sunbirds, Mountain Oriole, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Baglafecht Weaver and Rock Martin. We went to bed with high hopes for tomorrow’s Gorilla day.

Day 8, Nov 17th

The big G day and one of the biggest nature events in the world laid in front of us. Christer and Eva had seen the Mountain Gorillas once before many years ago but hoped for good photo opportunities using the digital technique instead of the previous old and more limited dia film option. We received basic instructions in how to behave and general information at the Gorilla center before a 45-min transportation in the jeep to where we started the tuff hike. The whole world population of Mountain Gorillas is shared by Uganda, Rwanda and The Republic of Congo and in Uganda there are 4 prides that tourists are allowed to see. These prides are normally peaceful but there are conflicts when silverbacks are trying to steal females from eachother or if another silverback is challenging the one heading a pride. Eva, Christer, Karin and I would together with a guide, an armed guard and a carrier try to see The Habinyanja Group headed by the 40-year old silverback Makara. We went in quite high pace steeply up and down slopes on a partly slippery narrow trail, but we heard that trackers had located the pride so it felt pretty safe. But you never know as the Gorillas can move fast in the jungle. Two Blue Monkeys fed on fruit beside the trail just before we were informed that we were close to the Gorillas after an hour of demanding walk.

13

It was almost unbelievable and overwhelming to see the group loudly digesting the breakfast. As in humans, it was only the youngsters that were active after the meal un-affected by the blood sugar dip that the adults were influenced by. Mother nature gave us a huge gift in this moment and we smiled of deep joy as we watched the Gorilla group. When 2 sweet Gorilla babies teased eachother near the Silverback he suddenly raised, grabbed a tree and with a quick and high sounding smash swung down the slope telling his pride it was time to move on. The guards told Eva, Christer, Karin and me to move down to be in position to see the Gorillas moving. As foreseen by the guide, the powerful Blackback Kavuyo carefully came walking 50 meters behind the rest of the group. Blackbacks have to stay away from the Silverback in order not to provoke and challenge his leadership. But when the day of leadership transition arrives the Blackback does not beat up the Silverback and chase him away as one could imagine. Instead the Silverback gets a role as the eldest and wisest in the pride and continuous to share his gained experience with the others. His romantic life is however over and the new leader takes over and spreads his genes. When Kavuyo continued down he suddenly changed direction, and after passing Karin with just 2 meters he quickly approached me and lifted his arm for something like a high five. Even though we had been told to stand still I tried to back off but my trousers were penetrated by big thorns thus making any retreat impossible. The guards told me to take pictures and stay still and after the huge Blackback had been 0.5 meter from me I could grab the camera. Christer and Karin thought this event was really funny and it must have been amusing from a distance and I had to give them that. In the middle of all luck Eva noticed that she had lost her iPhone somewhere in the dense vegetation. After some minutes in light despair one of the guards found it and the harmony came back. The Mountain Gorilla was the 10th species of monkey. Incredible and you cannot see that amount of monkey species anywhere else in the world.

14

During the walk back there was movement from a flock of birds in the canopies. Karin said she saw a blue-green bird that I also got into the binoculars. I could quickly see that the bird had green belly and blue upper breast and yellow upper forehead and a short diagnostic blackish bill. Paul waited by the car and when I described the bird for him and confirmed with the book it became clear that it had been an African Green Broadbill. It was probably a 1K bird as it was paler than what is shown in the book. It was almost too good to be true that we had found one of the most sought after endemic birds in Uganda. But this was in the beginning of The Neck and it was above the swamp where they nested around August. Paul did report the finding to a guiding colleague and the next day this group saw 4 African Green Broadbills in the same area and it felt nice to get the sighting confirmed even though we were sure of what we had discovered. After heavy rain during our lunch it cleared up later in the afternoon and we had 2 hours of fantastic birding with great views of White-spotted Flufftail, Plain Greenbul, White-browed Crombec, Buff-throated Apalis, Blue-shouldered Robin-chat (with a fantastic song), Petit’s Cuckooshrike and Black-faced Rufous Warbler among others.

Day 9, Nov 18th

We started birding in The Neck of Rift Valley that together with Ruhija are home to 23 endemic bird species. The birding was great and provided over 35 new species where 6 were endemics. Ruwenzori and Buff-throated Apalis provided great views as well as Red-headed Malimbe, Kakamega Greenbul, Ansorge’s Greenbul and Dwarf Honeyguide. The lodge we stayed the night in was a bit more plain compared to the others and as it was situated 2300 m above sea level it was a bit cold. Two men came driving on a MC with a tied big pig between them and this looked really funny and a bit risky. After some nice final hours of birding we drove back after the quick sunset and God of Fortune smiled at us again and provided 3 Ruwenzori Nightjars that called and sat on the road plus 2 African Civets on the road.

15

Day 10, Nov 19th It was rainy and cold when we after breakfast went into Ruhija again and the birds were not active in these conditions. After a few quite unproductive stops we headed towards Lake Mburo. The temperature was around 5 degrees C and it was not nice to see people and children walking around without any shoes and in thin clothes. As we descended to lower altitudes the rain stopped and in Lake Mburo NP the heat returned. We were scheduled for a boat ride on the lake and the main target was African Finfoot. Among a lot of Hippos, loudly calling African Fish Eagles and Kingfishers we saw 2 female Finfoots carefully and suspicious seeking food under branches hanging over the waterline. Even though I had been fortunate to see this bird in South Africa before, it was awesome to be able to spot it again. Both its shape and appearance are unique in the bird world and if we were correctly informed Lake Mburo is the best place in the world to see it. Other birds worth mentioning are Giant Kingfisher, Red-headed Lovebird and Yellow-throated Leaflove. The guy driving the boat almost got too close to some Hippos and some of the persons yelled straight out when one of the giant pigs smashed the jaws 0.5 m from the boat and almost hit it with full force. It was the last night with the gang and we enjoyed some bears and a good meal at Arcadia Cottages while we concluded that we had had 10 marvelous days together. When Karin and I went back to the cottage there was a huge Hippo feeding grass just 50 m from our cottage. One of the patrolling guards however told us that as long as you don’t block the way for the animal it is not dangerous. But, but…. We felt it was best to stay close to the house and watch the giant in the flash light. The African night was as usual filled with all kinds of voices from guys entering the night shift.

Day 11, Nov 20th

After breakfast, we lined up for a photo session where the lodge staff kindly took some group pictures and we hoped that at least one would be sharp. While we drew slowly through Lake Mburo NP birds and mammals appeared everywhere. Suddenly I saw a big brown bird in a tree ahead and Paul quickly identified it as a Verreaux’s Eagle Owl. It was huge and cool with its big dark eyes and pinkish eyelids. After offering us good photo opportunities it took off for a more undisturbed roosting place. At one stop a large flock of Zebras passed by the jeep and we added new birds like Green Wood Hoopoe, Crested Barbet, Brown-backed Honeybird, White-winged Black Tit, African Grey Hornbill, Bearded Woodpecker and African Grey Woodpecker. Another powerful Martial Eagle landed just 20 m from where we stood but quickly continued when it notified us. New mammals for the day was Topi and Banded Mongoose. As we enjoyed nature, time was consumed quickly and in order to get in time for the flights of the afternoon Paul had to increase the speed and we had to rush the last kilometers of Lake Mburo NP in rally speed. We made a quick stop on the way to Entebbe Airport at Kyazanga marsh where we could add Saddle-billed Stork, African Swamphen and Red-breasted Swallow to the list.

After such a good time and fantastic days together it was a bit emotional to say good-bye. Eva and Christer were going back to Sweden and Karin and I had Nairobi as our next destination. To summarize; our bird list ended at 437 and mammal list at 33 and we were all really grateful to Paul for his professional and strong guiding skills. The food and service at the lodges had also been fantastic and I strongly felt that I must come back to this lovely and beautiful country where 50% of the bird species in Africa has been seen. The pearl of Africa had been shining and given us an unforgettable experience.

Kenya: 20-24 November Tour itinerary in Kenya: Day 11 - November 20th: Nairobi, Kenya Day 12 - November 21st: Transfer to Masai Mara National Reserve Day 13 and 14 - November 22nd and 23rd: Masai Mara National Reserve Day 15 November 24th: Transfer to Nairobi Participants: Karin & Klas Rådberg Guide: Chege Wa Kariuki

Day 11, Nov 20th

The plane to Nairobi was half an hour late when James Makau picked us up at the airport and he drove us to a luxury hotel with extensive security control. Our appointed room was not cleaned and the piccolo looked a bit embarrassed when we had to change to a cleaned one. But TIA rules (This Is Africa) and it did not bother us at all. James and our guide for the next 4 days, Chege Wa Kariuki, waited for us in the lobby and built up a strategy based on what we hoped to see in terms of mammals and birds. We felt that we would be in really good hands the following days and that is really important of course when you visit a new country and culture. We enjoyed a late and delicious supper with evening soup, spring rolls and squid and everything provided through splendid service.

Day 12, Nov 21st

Even though we arrived for breakfast before the official start, there was all you can dream about on the food table. It rained almost all the way to Mara as we descended down to the Escapement in Rift Valley. When the heavy rain for short moments decreased a bit in strength, we rushed out near the road to quickly scan for birds. There were a lot of Wheatears and it was nice to tick Abyssian and Capped among ”our” wintering Northern, Isabelline and Pied. Purple Grenadier was a beauty and Chege (and I) was happy when we had a Red-throated Tit. We had a sharp deadline for lunch at the camp 2:30 pm and after many stops we were suddenly in a great hurry. Chege drove quickly until we came to Mara where the speed limit is of great importance. The battery of the car played us some tricks but Chege fixed it during an extra stressful break. We arrived approximately 1 hour late in Ashnil Mara Camp but in spite the delay there was a well-tasting buffet waiting for us. The lodge was placed in beautiful vegetation near a river and Karin and I immediately liked the place and were happy that we had 3 nights here in the pipeline.

The afternoon safari game drive proved to be over all expectations with a savanna full of mammals. Among thousands of Common Wildebeest herds of Thomson’s Gazelle, Impala and Zebra were everywhere. Two Black-backed Jackals created some worries in a flock of Impalas. Chege got a message on the radio and almost at the same time we saw a cat near another jeep in a distance. A big male Leopard ignorantly passed us in perfect warm evening light and a few minutes later there was also a pair of adult Lions resting and drinking at a water whole. The lions are really big and when just looking at the male you understand why they are considered to be the king of the animal kingdom. From a bird perspective Chege was surprised in a positive manner when a Rufous-bellied Heron flew right over us and landed in the narrow river. The Temminck’s Courser was beautiful and chestnut colored. The complete experience with all these animals spread out over these magnificent grasslands spiced with the African sunset was a dream from boyhood and both Karin and I was grateful when we headed back to the lodge. The African buffet tasted well again and we had a friendly and socially skilled Masai man serving us at the table.

Day 13, Nov 22nd

After some chill and rain the clouds eventually broke up and the sun quickly elevated the temperature during the morning hours. Two young male Lions were positioned on a small hill near the narrow road. The main target mammal in Kenya was Cheetah that Karin and I never had seen before and therefore it was a big relief when the radio announced that Cheetah was seen not far from our position. The small family consisted of a female and 2 cubs. They had remains of a kill that a Black-backed Jackal was very interested in and he tried to sneak in and

steal it over and over again. The cubs rushed towards it a couple of times but it was not until the patience of the female ran out and she with just a few accelerating steps hunted it away that the Cheetahs could finish breakfast in peace. If you can call it peace when 15-20 cameras constantly are shooting from all angles. The Cheetah is decreasing in numbers like so many other animals because of pouching etc and it is a true shame. Such a splendid and complete animal with a grace that is impossible to describe. The bird life was slow in the open grass land but as soon as we came to some bushes Karin found a Magpie Shrike. Chege liked the Cisticolas and there were quite many species of those around and new species of the day were Desert and Pectoral-patch. One of the better birds of the day was Yellow-throated Sandgrouse and I spotted a pair resting in the afternoon sun. Chege demonstrated big skills in the field and found many good birds and we have worked on field marks for Cisticolas, Larks, Wheatears and Shrikes. He is also skilled in placing the car in excellent positions for photos which we appreciate a lot. The fantastic day ended with close ups on another African Leopard and this time it was a subadult male or female that tried to catch birds.

Day 14, Nov 23d

It was a calm and beautiful morning with a group of Masai Giraffes eating on the trees when we drove up from the lodge. This day we planned to take a trip up in the mountains to look for a new habitat and hopefully other bird species. We took a loop in the bush land because a Black Rhino was seen there the previous evening. There are only about 25 Rhinos in Mara but they are, in spite their size, hard to see as they are shy and spend most of the time hidden in dense bushy habitats. On the way there we passed a bridge over Mara River and Chege stopped and joked that it was time for lunch. An awful smell immediately hit us at “The Crossing” and there were around 500 vultures and 200 Marabou Storks gathered on cliffs and….. It took a while before we saw that it was a massive amount of dead, bloated, rotten and stinking Wildebeest corpuses stocked in the stream that gave the scavengers an abundant buffet. There were mostly White-backed Vultures followed by Ruppel’s and among these 4 Hooded. Overall this was an overwhelming spectacular experience for several of our senses. The Wildebeests drown when they cross the river on their annual migration and the huge Nile Crocodiles for sure take their share. The Vultures in the area must have enough food for quite a while and some of them were riding on floating corpuses. We had several new species in the mountain area and we could easily have had one full day more up here. During lunch, we looked out over a beautiful ravine where a pair of Crowned Eagles nests but unfortunately none of them exposed themselves. Their territory covers a large area and they spend most of the time concealed below the canopy. The gravel road

through the open landscape did provide awesome views in the fading light and we saw a lot of Elephants and Giraffes along the road. Chege and I had planned to go through the species list before dinner at the camp, but suddenly the whole cantina area was invaded by millions of small flies that attacked the PC screen and every other light area. We had to give up and the lodge staff put out all lights. With low light and curtains we actually managed through the dinner. The dinner personnel demonstrated experience and must have experienced this several times. During the night, I heard the roaring of a Lion during several occasions which gave me a strong feeling of being in the wild.

Day 15, Nov 24th

It was, after 2 incredible African weeks, time for the last full day which meant a long journey from Mara to Nairobi Airport. The morning sun was caressing the grasslands and our vehicle and as we drove 2 young and 1 adult Bat-eared Fox suddenly ran to their nest 20 m from the car. This was totally unexpected and very nice indeed. A second adult fox was out hunting and slowly approached the nest. Unfortunately, the fox was scared by an air balloon person so we did not really get the pictures we had hoped for. We frequently stopped along the way and one of the best moments was when I spotted 2 + 2 Double-banded Coursers. The extremely well-camouflaged courser was very beautiful and a bit elusive like all birds in this group. As soon as we left the park and the Masai villages took over there were garbage and plastic bags everywhere and it is sad to see such habitat destruction. There were birds anyway and at one stop Chege’s whistling triggered a Pearl-spotted Owlet that exposed himself well. We looked hard for Pygmy Falcon that sometimes is sitting on the wires along the road but without success. It started to rain when we drove through Rift Valley Escapement and the rain went heavier and heavier as we started to ascend. We saw several accidents and the worst was a truck that had fallen down around 75 m down from the road. None could have survived that fall. Many trucks and cars are quite old and cannot deal with

such a heavy rainfall. It rained more and more and the water completely flooded the villages and took a lot of things in its brutal way forward and downwards. We were grateful that we sat in a big jeep with a skilled driver but anyhow it was creepy to see how quickly the water can take over and cause huge problems. We waited beside Manguo Ponds when the rain eventually stopped where after we could see different ducks. Among the ducks we saw some Hottentot Teals which was great. Because of the clouds, it quickly became darker but luckily enough we managed to see the endemics Sharpe’s Longclaw and Long-tailed Widowbird in Kinangop. There were also the more familiar Red-throated Pipit and 3 African Snipes displayed for us. Chege wanted to show us as much as possible before it went dark and we thought we had plenty of time to get to the airport. But because of the heavy rain, flooding, accidents and broken vehicles the que to the airport was a nightmare. All cars changed line every 100 m which slowed the traffic even more. After saying goodbye to Chege we entered the airport hall with an unhealthy high heartrate just to learn that the flight was 1.5 h delayed. We were really happy over the 4 fantastic days with Chege who is a superb guide. We could sum up to 252 bird and 29 mammal species in Kenya and in combination with exciting talks with locals and the overall awesome nature and sceneries we felt highly privileged.
