If you have any questions or queries please get in touch with your teacher or Miss Dewing. Please remember to email us your amazing work – we love seeing it! Monday 13 th July 2020 Comprehension Our first mini creative write will be about this image and story starter. He arrived at the surface of the water and took a refreshing breath of air. Whilst keeping his body completely still, he glanced around the swamp with large, circular, green eyes. After several moments, he slipped his enormous body beneath the surface of the water once again, and slithered off in search of food… Answer the following questions using the picture and text. 1. What is the creature being described in the story starter? What evidence can you find to support your belief? 2. What different animals do you think live in the swamp? 3. Tuesday 14 th July 2020 Edit and improveToday you are going to help me improve my work! I have written a few sentences about the creature I am imagining lives in the swap.

Improve each sentence by adding in a range of year 5 writing skills that would make my work so much more exciting to read! Underneath my sentences is a toolkit filled with different features you could use to expand the sentences – try to impress me with your descriptive vocabulary!

The creature put its head above the water. It was really big. It had big eyes and big teeth. It had sharp scales across its body. Its tail was really strong.

Feature Notes TickExpanded noun phrases An ENP is when we use really powerful descriptions to describe

our nouns. I have included loads of nouns for you to describe: creature, water, eyes, teeth, scales, body and tail.

Sentence starters I’ve started most of my sentences with ‘it’ – BORING!Try opening with an adverbial (eg. Silently) or a conjunction (eg. Whilst, Although)

Relative clauses A clause that starts with ‘which’, ‘who’ or ‘that’.Conjunctions Whilst, although, because, even though, thereforePunctuation , () – to add extra info

Wednesday 15 th July 2020 Creative write! It is creative write time! I would like you to complete a mini write – it only has to be a short paragraph but if you want to write more then go for it! You have complete freedom with this but there are 2 rules. Firstly your creative write must be linked to the image in some way. Secondly, you must use some year 5 writing skills in your writing. To help you, I have included some ideas of what you could write below and I have also written out a toolkit (use as many of the skills as you can).

Creative write ideas: A description of the creature in the swamp A setting description of the swamp A newspaper report about a sighting of a mysterious creature in the lake A diary entry of someone who was camping by the swamp and saw the terrifying creature A poem about the swamp/creature An information text about the creature (like the one we created last week) You could continue on from the story opening. What happens next?

He arrived at the surface of the water and took a refreshing breath of air. Whilst keeping his body completely still, he glanced around the swamp with large, circular, green eyes.

After several moments, he slipped his enormous body beneath the surface of the water once again, and slithered off in search of food…

Feature Notes TickExpanded noun phrases A powerful description of a noun

Adjectives, noun, preposition (where something is)Sentence starters Adverbs - How, where or when something is done:

ComprehensionOur next mini creative write will be about this image and police report.

FBI Case 3478

Location: Area 51

Time: 0100 hours

Status: Highly Classified

Risk: Extremely Dangerous, Code Red.

INTEL

Description by eyewitness: “It just seemed to come out of nowhere. It was travelling really quickly, and there was a bright blue light at the front of it as it flew. As it got closer, I hid behind some rocks. A few minutes later, the thing landed smoothly on the ground, and this ‘door thing’ opened. Before I blacked out, I saw a figure standing there looking at me. That’s all I can remember.”

Answer these questions using the image and text to help you.

1. Can you think of a synonym (a word which has the same meaning) for dangerous?2. What is an ‘eye-witness’?3. Where have you heard that term before?4. Who might the eye witness be?5. Where has this sighting occurred?6. What is it that the eye-witness is describing?7. Who do you think the figure is in the image?8. How do you think the eye-witness is feeling? What gives you that impression? Use

evidence from the text to support your answer.
