Must Haves: Past tense, third person, paragraphsWoosh! The eye-popper whizzed past the firework maker’s daughter. “Father, father, look what I have made!” she roared over the screech of newly lit fireworks. “What a fine smoke-swirler you have made. One day, when you are married you can tell your children all about it,” he replied. The firework maker’s daughter hung her head and walked away dragging her feet.“You won’t be a firework maker forever, you need to get married,” she mocked her father under her breath.

Crackle. A big-banger fizzled out before it even reached the sky. “I’ll never impress my father with this nonsense!” she mumbled throwing the disappointing firework to the ground. Tears rolled down her filthy face onto the muddy floor. She felt like the world was against her but this did not stop her. She picked up a handful of rainbow-drops and sizzle-makers and lit them. The colourful, sparkly display before her eyes left her breathless. Could this be the one?

Ahem. Her father crept into the workshop and made his presence known. He wanted to tell her how proud he was of her. Her matted, scruffy hair was across her face as she carefully focused on the explosion-maker in her tired hands. “Darling daughter, please let me help you become the firework maker you were meant to be,” whispered the father. She dropped the firework onto the workbench, ran towards him and hugged him so tight he felt he might burst.

If your child finds this tricky start them off with calculations that don’t need exchanges (all top and bottom digits will add together to make 9 or less).e.g.

If you feel like your child needs more challenge give them two four-digit numbers to add together! e.g. 2635 + 5937
