Frollo ordered Phoebus to arrest her but she took off, running through the crowd with her goat, Djali. She ran to the cathedral for safety but Phoebus followed her. Frollo caught up with them and grinned triumphantly. That’s when I stepped in, as the Archdeacon of Notre Dame. “Frollo, you will not touch her!”

Frollo glared at Esmeralda. “You have chosen a magnificent prison, but it is a prison nonetheless. Set one foot outside and you are mine.” He stormed off with Phobeus close behind.

Now safe, Esmeralda looked up and saw Quasimodo watching from the stairs. “Wait!” she cried, ”I’d like to talk to you!” She followed him to the tower, where shyly he showed her his toy village. She became acquainted with the magnificent bells up in the tower until eventually, Quasimodo assisted her in escaping the soldiers by carrying her down the side of the tower. In exchange for her freedom, she gave him the special necklace that she always wore. “If you ever need it, the necklace will lead you to safety.”

When Judge Frollo heard that she had escaped, he was enraged. “I’ll find her, even if I have to burn down all of Paris!” He summoned Phoebus and together they searched the city for the escapee. Frollo suspected a miller and his family of hiding Esmeralda, therefore he ordered Phoebus to burn down their house. When Phoebus, who was horrified, refused, the judge got even more furious. “You insolent coward! The sentence for insubordination is death.”

The soldiers prepared to execute Phoebus but Esmerelda, watching secretly, threw a rock at Frollo’s horse. It reared, dumping Frollo to the hard, unforgiving ground. Taking his chance, Phoebus broke free, hopped onto the horse and fled across the city. As he crossed the shallow river, one of the arrows unluckily struck him and he fell into the water. After watching from afar, Esmeralda slipped carefully into the river, pulling him to safety. Altough Phoebus was unconscious, he was thankfully still breathing. She had to get help, but where? That’s when she thought of her caring friend, Quasimodo.
