Monday 29 th June 2020 Hi everyone! Well we’re in the final few days of June I hope you enjoyed the sunshine last week and are ready for new activities and challenges today. We are changing themes this week – we’re looking at a new book in English and moving on to measuring mass (weight) in maths. So here goes… English We will be looking at a new book today called The Night Gardener by the Fan brothers. You might know this book and if you do your predictions should be spot on! Here is the front cover. 1) Have a close look at it and then have a go at filling in the prediction sheet on the website! You have done a similar thing before – think about what you can see, what you can infer and what you wonder.

Monday 29th June 2020Hi everyone! Well we’re in the final few days of June I hope you enjoyed the sunshine last week and are ready for new activities and challenges today. We are changing themes this week – we’re looking at a new book in English and moving on to measuring mass (weight) in maths.

So here goes…

EnglishWe will be looking at a new book today called The Night Gardener by the Fan brothers. You might know this book and if you do your predictions should be spot on!Here is the front cover.

1) Have a close look at it and then have a go at filling in the prediction sheet on the website!

You have done a similar thing before – think about what you can see, what you can infer and what you wonder.

To infer means to have a sensible guess based on what you can see.

2) Now we’re going to start to look inside the book. Have a look herehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxwxyKnBgcM

But do NOT go any further than 29 seconds at the moment!!While you are watching take time to look carefully at the pictures as they are really important in this story.

3) Pause the story at 29 seconds and you will see this picture

William looked out of his window to find a commotion on the street. He quickly dressed, ran downstairs and raced out of the door to discover…

Take a few minutes to look at the words in red and look at these questions.

Do you know what a commotion is? Can you tell an adult? I have put a definition of a commotion at the end of these instructions – were you correct?

What does the word raced tell you?How is William moving? What does the suffix (the end of the word) tell you about what tense the story is written in?

What does it mean to discover something? How does this word want you to turn the page and find out what is happening next? Why is there ellipsis (…) after the word?

4) Now to get imaginative. I want you to imagine what that commotion looks like and write a short description of it. The picture at 6 seconds on the story shows you what the street looks like to help you

Think about what you can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. You might not be able to do all of these things but we do think about our senses when we write a description.

You don’t know what he can see yet so you can add in a prediction if you want or just describe the commotion. Perhaps you could add your own ellipsis for effect too.

Here’s one I wrote…William looked out of his window to discover…That all his neighbours were running around the street. He had never seen his quiet and morose neighbours looking so animated! The old lady who lived across the street was jumping up and down and making a terrible noise and pointing at something. Meanwhile a man carrying a ladder was swinging it round and round making the little children have to duck and squeal. All along the street people were hanging out of open windows because there was a bright red car honking its horn loudly every 5 seconds while the man at the wheel couldn’t stop smiling and waving at them! The smell of trampled grass wafted up to William as some older children ran in and out of the grownups and all over the dewy lawn. As he tried to take in everything that was happening he looked slowly to his left and saw…

When you have finished your description you can watch the rest of the clip and hear the whole story.I hope you like it!

MathsI had prepared PowerPoints on measuring mass for today but then I thought that you’re probably bored of PowerPoints and sheets and the best way to learn about measuring is to actually do it! You will need some kitchen scales for this and try to measure in grams and kilogramsYou will be looking at measuring the weight of things. So I would like you to bake or make something that involves weighing and measuring things. That could be a cake, biscuits, muffins, fudge or you could follow a recipe and make dinner for everyone at home! You could do more than one thing if you have the ingredients at home!

When cooking you need to be accurate (or so Mary Berry says) so weigh things carefully and even better you get a tasty treat at the end! While you are weighing your ingredients take some time to feel how heavy the different ingredients are. Think about why there appears to be more of some ingredients than others when they weigh the same. Weigh other things in your kitchen to see how heavy they are in g and kg.Send me a photo of what you make via email or twitter – I’d love to see them!If you do not have any ingredients at home, choose a recipe and see what things you can find in your kitchen that weigh the same. E.g. if the recipe asks for 100g of flour, can you find 100g of teaspoons? How many do you think you will need? You can do this even if you have ingredients if you want to!

There are also some great games you can play here that deal with measuring weight. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/measures

Extra-curricular1) Using a piece of cardboard draw and cut out a face with ears but no

hair. Now take it outside and with an adult go on a hairstyle hunt. See how many funny hairstyles you can give it. These pictures are not mine unfortunately!

2) Create your own workout video (you don’t have to film it, but if you do I’d love to see it!). You can use music and it can be a dance workout, a cardio workout or yoga if you want – just as long as you’re moving!

I hope you enjoy these and I know that you will work hard. Send me your work or pictures, as well as just an update of what you are getting up to by email or twitter and I look forward to seeing them!

A commotion - a sudden moment of noise, fuss or confusion.

Mrs. C wondered what the commotion was in the cloakroom after break.
