4 Primary Times Easter 2016

I will never, ever, forget the toe-curling embarrassment when my small son announced, loudly, to the hairdresser “The last time I came here I couldn’t get my hair cut because there were eggs in it.” Eggs, better known as nits. The hairdresser was extremely reassuring and said that she was no stranger to nit-infested heads and I had no reason to be ashamed. But I was.

I never had nits when I was a child and don’t really remember anyone else having them. In those days there was still a huge stigma attached to head lice. They were something that afflicted dirty people – lousy people. Since then head lice infestations have increased significantly and everyone and their mother says that head lice love clean heads. In reality, head lice do not care if your head is clean or dirty - head lice like heads. All that matters to the average head louse is a good blood supply as they are essentially tiny insect vampires who live by drinking blood.

Head lice are small wingless creatures – therefore they don’t fly from head to head. Nor do they jump, they walk. Females lay 3 – 4 eggs daily and these are attached (glued on, if you like) to the hair at the base of the shaft. The word ‘nit’ officially refers to the empty egg, but generally these days most of us refer to lice or any sort of lice infestation as ‘nits.’

Children aged 4 – 14 are the most frequently infected

group. My son went to pre-school and despite several notices about ‘nits’ he never picked them up. But, in his Reception Year at Primary school, he more than made up for it. For the first term I was engaged in a permanent state of warfare against head lice. Nits, while they may be uncomfortable, and more than a bit disgusting, are not dangerous. They are, however, highly contagious. If a child gets infected the chances are extremely high that everyone who they have close contact with will succumb too. Everyone will need to be treated.

Treatment can be problematic, because like any good parasite, lice are survivors. It’s no wonder British people spend approximately £30 million per annum on lice treatments. The problem with lice is that no matter how assiduously you treat them with chemicals your efforts will end in failure unless you remove every single last egg.

Many products claim that they kill eggs as well as live lice. They may do, but, head lice rapidly develop immunity to various chemicals. The best way to find an effective product is to ask other parents and teachers. The only sure way to rid yourself of a nit infestation is to take a two-pronged approach. Use the louse-killing products on everybody in the home at the same time. Then nit-comb.

There are plenty of different nit-combs available to buy at various prices – again, ask for recommendations. If your nit-comb isn’t up to the job you are wasting your time.

Before combing through your child’s hair liberally apply conditioner to your child’s head and work through until the hair is coated. The conditioner has several purposes – it makes it easier to manage the hair and divide it into sections. If you’ve used a chemical product on your child to kill the lice, it will help recondition hair. Conditioner eases the path of the tight nit comb through the hair, making the process easier and less painful for both you and your child.

Finally, and in my opinion, the best part, the nits show up better against the white gloop. When nit combing it’s important to start at the base of the shaft, as close to the skull as you can, because this is where the eggs are laid. I quite enjoyed nit combing as I got a great sense of satisfaction watching the black specks pile up on the paper towels I had for wiping the comb between use. But then again, I had one small male child with short hair. I don’t know how soothing I’d have found the exercise if I’d had more than one child with medium to long hair.

If you have school age children the best way to stay on top of lice infestations is to keep vigilant. Most kids with lice will scratch. (Most people only have to hear the word ‘lice’ and they begin to itch. I bet you are itchy right now). However not everyone who has lice will feel itchy, so it’s a good idea to regularly check your child’s head for those tell-tale black dots. Especially before a trip to the hairdresser! n

LITTLE WELLY ‘GoES WILD’ norbury Park, Surrey. Bigger, better

and muddier than ever before, the

little Welly ‘Goes Wild’ is set to open in

norbury Park, Surrey at a Wildlife trust

site on June 11th and 12th. kids will

have a ball as they run, jump, climb,

swing and crawl their way through

the wildly popular outdoor adventure

series. in the wake of last year’s sell-

out success organisers have confirmed

that the little Welly ‘Goes Wild’ is back

for a third stint of squelchy summer

fun. The return to Henley-on-Thames

will see the event held at Oxfordshire’s

Culden Faw Estate and a new launch

in norbury Park, Surrey in a Surrey

Wildlife Trust site. They are both set to

be action packed weekends full of fun,

laughter and of course bucket loads

of mud. Despite the fact that the Uk

boasts a plethora of beautiful outdoor

landscapes, English adventurer Ben

Fogle revealed that 25% of British kids

spend less than 30 minutes a week

playing outside. These are alarming

figures and indicate the pressing need

for parents to encourage their kids

to rekindle their sense of adventure.

For little ones who love to get their

hands dirty the not to be missed 3km

obstacle course takes mini-adventurers

through streams, woodland and

plenty of muck. kids will take on 30

individual challenges that unfold in

the picturesque Surrey countryside.

The one of a kind experience has

been specially designed for children

aged four and over, however parents

and carers are also welcome to join

in the fun. After scaling the towering

heights of The Wall, conquering the

looming Tyre Mountain, splish, splash,

sploshing through the Stream Run

and bouncing around in the Foam

Pit, kids can then collect their shiny

finisher’s medal and get their fingers

sticky with a well-deserved ice cream.

As well as the action packed obstacle

course, the grounds of norbury Park

will be brimming with outdoor play

experiences and activities for the

whole family to enjoy. Challenge the

brood to a game of laser tag, a circuit

of the family challenge game, ride a

pony, Zen out in a yoga class, build

dens, watch your toddlers take on the

really little welly course or chill out

in front of the entertainment stage.

Adding to the excitement will be a

string of energetic organisations that

are passionate about kids, education

and the great outdoors. First Soccer

will be on-hand to highlight the

importance of staying active while

The WildLife Trust will be dishing out

inspiration and ideas on how to enjoy

and preserve the natural environment.

Obstacle course tickets cost £15 for

children and adult’s tickets cost £7.50.

The world’s highest search for Wally and friends has just been announced at the View from The Shard during the Easter school holidays 19 March – 10 April.

Rather than the traditional hunt for eggs, the attraction at the top of Western Europe’s tallest building has collaborated with ‘Where’s Wally?’ during the Easter break for a larger-than-life search for the elusive globetrotter. Visitors to The view from The Shard will be challenged to spot Wally and friends (plus a few red herrings) amongst the busy city skyline.

Intrepid explorers Wally, Wenda, Woof, Wizard Whitebeard and Oldlaw will be reproduced in large-scale formats, appearing at some of the city’s best loved hotspots, rooftops and along the Thames. As the only place to see 1,000 years of London’s history from one vantage point, The view from The Shard has also included some historical characters to complicate the search and celebrate the city’s own colourful characters.

Families visiting during 19 March – 10 April will be able to purchase a combined ‘Family Ticket’ (valid for 2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and 3 children), priced £79.95 – saving over 15%. All tickets during the period come with a ‘Where’s Wally?’ activity sheet which can be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a family adventure. Ages 2½ to adults held in Chertsey

Starting Thursday 24 April in Claygate Village Hall at 11.15pm to 12.00pm our STARLETS BABIES class is for our 1 to 2 year olds. This is a music and movement class using tambourines, cuddly toys and nursery rhymes. During these classes we aim to gain the confidence of the children and ask parents to stay and join in the class. We will start to introduce the first steps of ballet and develop balance and co-ordination.

Our STARLETS 1 class is for our 2 to 3 year olds and is held

at 12.15pm – 1.00pm. This is a class which builds on the previous Starlets Babies class and aims to continue developing skills of balance and co-ordination. The children are still encouraged to use tambourines and teddy bears and do small steps, mime and songs in front of others to help build confidence. We will continue with the introduction of the first steps of ballet to include hopping and skipping, galloping and the first position of the feet and arms. When the children reach 3 they are usually ready to join the next class and are independent enough to be left.
