WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL

Woodford Green Primary is a one-form-entry school with onsite Nursery, based in Waltham Forest and on the border of Redbridge. Surrounded by Epping Forest the school retains a village school ethos, with a family atmosphere and character.

It has a long history, with the reputation of being the oldest primary school in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. We have a special oak tree in the middle of our playground which is thought to be about 500 years old. Today, as in its earliest days, our school aims to enable each and every pupil to develop to their full potential, providing them with quality education within a caring environment.

We are proud of our pupils, school and staff, supported by the governing body. But don’t take our word for it, please feel free to come and see for yourself.

NURSERY

OUR PROVISION At our Nursery we are able to offer flexible hours to suit you and your

child.

ADMISSIONS Enrollment forms can be downloaded from the website or obtained from the school office.

TIMINGS Nursery morning sessions run from 8.45am – 11.45am and afternoons from 12.15pm – 3.15pm with the option of packed lunch or school dinner and the flexibility to choose the hours that suit you.

COST All 3 and 4-year-olds in England are entitled to 15 hours each week of free early education. The date you can claim will depend on when your child’s birthday is.

Additional hours can be organised for your child on a regular or ad hoc basis subject to space.

We work with parents to provide flexible hours that suit your needs. Some parents opt to have two full days in Nursery, others spread the hours more evenly throughout the week. You can just use the 15 free hours or top up your child’s hours by paying low fees.

For details of current prices please contact the school office

RECEPTION

ADMISSIONS The total number of Reception children accepted each year is 30; the catchment area varies each year but incorporates areas of both Waltham Forest and Redbridge.

All admissions are dealt with by the local authority in which you live and are based on your distance from the school.

Please see your local authority website for further information on the admission process. Waltham Forest - https://www.walthamforest.gov.uk/content/applying-primary-school-place Redbridge - http://www2.redbridge.gov.uk/cms/children_and_schools/schools/applications_and_admissions/primary_school_applications.aspx

INDUCTION Each autumn, ‘open days’ are held for prospective parents and children to visit the school.

We place a priority on ensuring children settle well into the Reception class. In the summer term before children start, families are invited to visit the class, meet their fellow classmates and the class teacher. In September the intake is staggered over several weeks and children will start by doing mornings only, then stay for lunch, before attending for the whole day. We work closely with parents during this time to ensure the process is smooth.

SCHOOL LIFE

SCHOOL CURRICULUM The school aims to develop areas of thought enabling children to develop a stable, moral, co-operative and confident personality, expecting caring attitudes and courtesy from all of the pupils.

Each class has a tailored programme designed to suit each pupil’s needs. Work is differentiated to enable each child to work at their own level. Classes include whole class, small group and individual work with the class teacher, or support staff. Careful records are maintained of children’s progress and challenges. The staff are always happy to discuss these with you.

- A minimum of 15 minutes reading per night, this can be independent or with an adult.

In addition, each week the class teacher will set homework to consolidate what is done within the classroom.

GETTING INVOLVED

Parents are a key part of our school and their child’s education. In addition to the formal parent meetings and reports, parents are also invited to class assemblies, workshops and open times, and to help with educational visits. Reception parents are invited to regularly ‘stay-and-play’ while the children settle into class and, as the children get older, there are meetings to discuss subjects such as secondary transfer and sex education.

Teachers are available for consultation by phone or appointment. Parents can contact the school by phone, email or a note to make an appointment.

In addition, at the start of each term parents will receive information outlining the curriculum and how parents can support their child in their learning.

Weekly newsletters provide key information and dates.

VOLUNTEERING There are a number of ways to be more involved in the life of the

school: Parent Teacher Association (PTA) – runs events for the pupils and families Governors – parent governors are a key part of our governing body; elections are held regularly In class – for example helping children with reading Educational Visits – accompanying classes on visits

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

At Woodford Green Primary we treat each pupil as a unique individual, and tailor the education we provide to their needs. The school's policy for special educational needs follows the national Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice. This was updated and implemented in September, 2014.

Parents who feel their child may have special educational needs should contact the Inclusion Manager or the Headteacher to discuss their concern. It may then be deemed appropriate to contact outside agencies for further assessment to be made and to recommend a particular programme for the child.

Children who have special educational needs may need extra help with learning either in the classroom or in small group situations. The Educational Psychologist visits regularly to talk to parents, children and teachers.

‘Special educational needs’ relates not only to those requiring extra help because of a measure of difficulty but also to those who are more able. Small groups may be arranged to cover an aspect of learning in more depth, or extension work may be given in the classroom.
