L!LUMNI BRIEFS L PRIDE OF OLYMPIC PROPORTIONS JOHN ISBISTER '77 L ike millions of people around the world, many Americans watched the 2002 Winter Olympics. We took great pride in the tremendous and surprising success of athletes from the United States. Few Americans participate in winter sports-par- ticularly some of the wilder and crazier events-and fewer still knew anyone who competed at the games. Yet it was natu- ral to feel good about the suc- cess of those with whom we share the bond and affiliation of nationality. Similarly, though we are separated by years and distance from the University of Maryland School of Law, all of the School's alumni have celebrat- ed its recent accomplish- ments. In particular, we felt great pride when Us. News 6- World Report ranked the School of Law as one of the top law schools in the country. (Most of us were proud of the law school before it achieved that ranking-bur it was nice to John Isbister, a partner at Tydings & Rosenberg, Up, serves as chair of the Alumni Association's communi- cations committee. see that those keeping score also recognize the excellentlegal edu- cation that the School provides.) This ranking considers the School's current reputation, and the LSAT scores, GPAs and bar passage rates of current students. Although they may never have the opportunity to visit it, alumni around the country also are excited about the new School of Law building that is almost completed. While I (hopefully) will not have to take classesin the new facility,I can- not wait to see the state-of-the-art classrooms and ample com- mon areas in use. Legal educators around the country will talk about the law school with envy, and many will want to teach here because of the facility. Scholarship and learning will thrive in the new building, and top-notch students will be drawn to our School to study here. All alumni will be pleased to know that their School is housed in a building designed to provide the best legal education in the 21st century. I have no doubt that the value of every alumnis' degree has increased in value as the reputation of the law school has grown and spread. I invite all alumni to do more than just bask in the reflected gloty of what is going on at the School of Law. Some alumni simply recommend that a good student apply to the law school. Others teach at the School, participate on panels about the legal profession, mentor individual students, host student events, and contribute to the Building Campaign or the Annual Fund. There are many other ways that alumni can support the activities of the School and its students. Please contact the Alumni Association office and ask how you can support the law school. It may not be as exhilarating as skiing down an icy hill at 70 miles per hour, you may not earn any medals, and you probably won't be on television. However, you will be part of making the University of Maryland School of Law one of the finest law schools in the country.
